Matthew Vaughn Reveals 90% Of His Story Made It Into X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Matthew Vaughn was originally set to direct X-Men: Days of Future Past before choosing to helm the brilliant looking Kingsman: The Secret Service, but just how much of his story remained and what did he think of the changes made by Bryan Singer? Hit the jump to find out...

When it was revealed that Matthew Vaughn would not direct X-Men: Days of Future Past, the majority were hugely disappointed. The only plus side was that Fox turned to X-Men and X-2 helmer Bryan Singer to take over, but just how much of Vaughn's take on the "inbetweenquel" remained? "I’d say 90%," the filmmaker told Collider while talking to them about Kingsman: The Secret Service. "I mean, we worked on the script [Simon] Kinsberg and I. It was a really tough decision for me, because I pulled out just because I’d finished the Kingsman: The Secret Service script at the same time and I was like “My god if I don’t make a fun spy movie right now, somebody else’s going to do it.” And I think there’s five coming out next year now. So we’re going to be the first of it not the last." That explains that, but how many tweaks did Singer make?

"Bryan [Singer] did a few things, which I thought were genius that weren’t in my script," he revealed. "I had Juggernaut breaking into the Pentagon, he changed it to Quicksilver and did that [frick]ing brilliantly, I have to add. My idea was the sentinels at the end, I wanted them to look like Mystique. I thought there should be thousands of mystiques attacking them in the future. He changed a few more of the mutants, but it was pretty close. Yeah, it was pretty close." What will be interesting now of course is how X-Men: Apocalypse turns out WITHOUT Vaughn's involvement. Will Simon Kinberg and Bryan Singer recapture this same magic or will we end up with a botched Apocalypse like "The Phoenix Saga" in X-Men: The Last Stand? We'll have to wait and see...

Kudos to Singer for the everything regarding Quicksilver scene then.

That's pretty fascinating stuff.

Still would've loved to see Vaughn's take on it.

Though from everything I'm hearing about it, Secret Service isn't exactly a bad consolation prize at all.

I knew it!!!! I really hope Vaughn is involved in Apocalypse, he is the reason the last two X-Men movies have been the best yet, I wish I could have seen his version of DOFP

Future Sentinels were dope.

Vaughn's up there with Abrams, Nolan and Brad Bird for me. The dude's never made a film I haven't loved.

wonder what other mutants Bryan changed.

we saw Jubilee concept art, and Kinberg discussed that both Psylocke and Cable were discussed for the future scenes. Wonder if any more mutants were included on the very first version of the script. Like Gambit or Kurt

His future Sentinel idea sounds so dumb

Does this mean Vaughn is responsible for the story or the script??

It's just hard to imagine this being Vaughn's idea of where to go with a sequel/follow up to X-Men First Class.

After X-Men Last Stand, I had ZERO interest re-visitng that story or those characters. I just assumed the idea of linking the X-Men movies fell on the studio or Singer, not Vaughn.

This movie made the Marvel Zombies to not use the RT ratings when boasting their favorite movies.

I still think the Juggernaut/Quiksilver change was politically motivated, in order to beat Marvel to the punch!

@Doopie not really. He was a highschool football player and the concept art of him wasn't the greatest.

He has story credit with Jane Goldman and Simon Kinberg. But Kinberg actually wrote the script.

What sort of x men film will we get next with kinberg writing without Matthew Vaughan holding his hand? Another dofp or another last stand?

By the way, does it actually bother no one else that they simply take it for granted in the movie that Mystique's biological ability to shapeshift can simply be swapped over robot?! I mean, am I the only one which that didn't make sense to?

Anyway, I'm not bashing, it was fun movie (for a foX-Men film) but definitely not without a few major plotholes.

@sickboy76

I'd honestly say something easily better than DOFP. I believe that Singer, Kinberg and another guy have all worked on the script together through numerous writing sessions. Y've also been using the Age of Apocalyose book, television adaptions and more for inspiration of the story. So I'd say there's way less to worry about this go around.

i'm glad Fox has the rights to the X-Men universe, as I don't think Marvel would be giving us these kinds of films at this point. Plus they work in their own universe and don't feel cheapened by it.

@sickboy76

Kinberg has plenty of help on Apocalypse. Him, Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris, and Bryan Singer are writing it. I think they'll be just fine. Singer, Harris, and Dougherty wrote X2, so they know what's up.

TheRationalNerd - 12/22/2014, 11:30 AM
As happy as I want to be that Singer is t the one to fully blame for some of the misguided directions from this film. I think that if anyone owns the DoFP Blu-Ray they Shoukd check out the features where he talks about the future mutants. Aside from Kitty basically playing the similar role of Racheal Summers all of the other mutants were thrown in because of how cool they were rather than their characterization and other monumental aspects surrounding them. I can't act deaf towards hearing something like that. Cool powers is awesome but characteristics lacking to back them up is a loss.

Well first class and DOFP are the best x men movies... so i guess its time to wait and see what singer is really capable of.
