Since it was announced, it's been hard not to have mixed feelings over X-Men: First Class. On the one hand, I was glad to see that the franchise would be getting a reboot after what were, in my opinion, three not that good movies. On the other, the fact that Bryan Singer would be involved along with a few other titbits of news and rumours, left something of a bad taste in my mouth despite the brilliant announcement of Matthew Vaughn as director. Despite that, it's still far too early to judge this movie as we still know very little about it. That is why I thought now would be the perfect time to do another of my "Top 10" lists in order to share with you guys the things that I most want to see in the upcoming movie!

10. Alice Eve/Emma Frost’s Cleavage

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Ok, so I admit that I got to 9 things and started to struggle. Maybe it's because I'm just not that enthusiastic about this movie or everything below is enough to keep me happy. Either way, that's how I ended coming up with this. And to be fair, I think I would actually quite like to see this in the movie...A LOT! I really didn't like their choice for Emma in X-Men Origins: Wolverine and I'm glad to see they've gone for the beautiful (and British) Alice Eve this time around. Regardless of whether or not you like this casting decision though, you've gotta admit she'd look pretty damned amazing in that costume! In fact, it would be worth the price of admission alone! It’s far from ideal that Emma is being introduced as the love interest of Charles and Erik as it once again messes with the comic book continuity. So, to help us get over them once again disregarding the source material, they can at least give us something nice to look at come 2011!

9. A Shared Marvel Studios Fox Universe

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I’ve come to accept that it’ll probably be a very, very long time until we see characters like the X-Men back in the hands of Marvel Studios. So, to make the best of a bad situation, I’d like Fox to start to combine the characters they hold the rights to into their own shared universe. I suppose the best example of how they could do this would be with the Fantastic Four. A reboot of the franchise (titled “Reborn”) has already been reported this year so a fresh start of both that series and now this one would be the ideal place to start! I’m not talking about anything too blatant at this point but perhaps a mention of the Baxter Building or the four’s powers which resemble those of mutants. I know that this all sounds like it should be under my “Easter Eggs” suggestion but I’ve given it it’s own place here simply because of the myriad of possibilities it opens up. I have a feeling that the title of the planned reboot could mean that the FF will also be teenagers to fit in with the direction of both First Class and the Ultimate Universe. Far from what I want to see, but it makes sense. If anything though, that would make it even easier to combine the two franchises and I could probably just about stomach the fact we’d have a younger version of the FF if it meant seeing the characters together at some point! Of course, they could also do this with an older version of the team but either way it’d be awesome to see The Thing cameo in a future X-Men movie or Cyclops to pop up in the FF! Just imagine if Magneto and Doctor Doom were to team-up…

8. Easter Eggs

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I’d usually use this part of my list to share my thoughts on all the characters that I want to see introduced or mentioned in order to set them up for future movies. Well, if X-Men Origins: Wolverine proved anything, it’s that too many cameos can end up ruining things and with a large amount of mutants already announced as being in this film, it’s probably best not to add any more to the mix! Instead, I think that they should use X-Men: First Class to develop new storylines for any future instalments. I’m talking about stuff like “Days Of Future Past“, “Dark Phoenix” and “Age Of Apocalypse” There are literally dozens of hints that they could drop to at least plant some seeds for any of these potential classics to be adapted in future! Those are just a few of the better known ones off the top of my head, but there are also plenty of smaller scale stories they could use as well. And I know that I just mentioned cutting down on the cameos but they could still mention a mutant in Russia who can turn to steel (Colossus) or a Canadian superhero team of mutants (Alpha Flight) for example. My point is, drop a few hints that us comic book fans will easily pick up on and simultaneously leave the door open for new characters to be introduced at some point in future!

7. No Wolverine

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Hugh Jackman is a great Wolverine. Despite the flaws of the past X-Men movies, he's always delivered a great performance (even if he is too tall, lol!) and it's clear that it's a character he cares a lot about. Regardless, I don't think that I want to see him in X-Men: First Class! it's bad enough that he was given too much if the spotlight in the past three, without stealing the show again here! No, a cameo wouldn't be the end of the world and if done properly they might even be able to find a good role for Logan but I'd still be happier if they just focused on the first class of mutants...precisely what this film is supposed to be about after all! he is too tall, lol!) and it's clear that it's a character he cares a lot about. 6. Cyclops As A Leader, Not A Whiner!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I know that there are some of you who don’t really think much of Scott Summers as a character and I can understand that to an extent. I’d love to once again go off on one about how Bryan Singer focused too much on him and Wolverine fighting over Jean Grey rather than showing him to be the capable leader that he is but I cant completely fault him for focusing on that aspect of the character as he’s often been portrayed that way in the comic books! Since Grant Morrison killed off Jean a few years back, Cyclops has been able to lose that aspect of his personality. Don’t get me wrong, he’s always been a master strategist etc but I’ve enjoyed reading him a lot more since he hooked up with Emma Frost and stepped up to lead pretty much the entire mutant race! What I’m getting at here is that is how I think, and want, him to be in Vaughn’s upcoming movie. This is obviously a much younger Scott, and my whole point would probably be more relevant if this was to do with an adult version, but despite that it’s about time we see him step up and show us why he’s actually a pretty damn awesome comic book character who can rival the likes of Captain America when it comes to leadership!

5. Quicksilver And The Scarlet Witch

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I had mixed feelings about including these two on the list. And I think that it’s mainly due to my desire to see the duo in a future Avengers movie! The fact they’re mutants though makes that extremely unlikely due to Fox probably owning the rights to Wanda and Pietro Maximoff so I think that it’s about time they make a big screen appearance! At this point, we obviously don’t know whether Xavier and Magneto’s friendship will fall apart early on in the movie or at the end. If it’s the latter, then he’ll need a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants that I hope will be better than the groups we saw in the past three movies…and having two of his kids as a part of it will both add to the drama and be a great sight for us comic book fans! Their relationship could of course be handled in two ways. The classic 616 version or the slightly more bizarre Ultimate version where its heavily implied that they have an incestuous relationship. Either way, I think it could lead to some interesting scenes while their powers alone would surely look fantastic if adapted to live action. Just imagine Quicksilver fighting the X-Men at super speed or the Scarlet Witch using her reality altering powers - either way, it would make for a great visual treat!

4. Original Five

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Cyclops. Marvel Girl. Angel. Beast. Iceman. I know we’ve all had this discussion before and regardless of the events of the past three X-Men movies I still think it’s vitally important that they’re all there. I’m perfectly ok with changes being made to the source material in live action adaptations (because after all they’re sometimes necessary and often improve on some things) but as with The Avengers, I think it’s an important nod to us fans and generally respectful to have the original founding members of the team there. The difference with that though is that despite how much I don’t like the thought of Hank and Jan not being there, it does make some sense that Marvel Studios’ want to wait until the Ant-Man solo movie. In the case of X-Men: First Class, the same rule doesn’t really apply. I’m perfectly ok with them being surrounded by mutants like those already announced (Havok, Banshee, Darwin etc) and if only two or three of the original five were there I guess it wouldn’t ruin the movie for me but for both the reasons above and as a fan of the comic books, it is something I’d really like to see on the big screen!

3. The Sentinels

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

After three movies of seeing the X-Men fighting Magneto, it’s almost a relief to think that him and Professor X will be working together this time around! It’s not that I don’t want to see them fight Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants but both Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner didn’t exactly do a great job of delivering fight scenes as interesting or exciting as the comic books. Regardless, I’d rather see the X-Men take on a villain that’ll both challenge them more and will really test them as a team. And the perfect choice for that? The Sentinels of course. Just imagine them fighting the mutant killing robots in the streets of New York or outside the mansion which is half destroyed during the battle. My point is, their involvement would lead to some truly epic fight scenes. Plus, if X-Men: First Class is going to be the start of a new franchise (I’ve pretty much given up hope of ever seeing an X-Men 4) then this would actually be the perfect villain, along with Bolivar Trask, that would drive Charles and Erik setting up their rivalry for a sequel!

2. Costumes

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Perhaps one of the biggest problems I had with Bryan Singer’s X-Men movies was the pathetic excuse for costumes that they had. It’s not that I necessarily dislike the idea of them not being in their colourful comic book outfits because in all honesty, a direct adaptation of some of them would look downright ridiculous in live action! It’s the fact that they were all so bland and had no individual characteristics that really pissed me off. I mean, Wolverine “borrowing” one of Cyclops spare costumes!? Unbelievable. If Singer was determined to put them all in those bland leather outfits, he could have at least given each of them an individual colour somewhere in there to at least give the characters some individuality. Regardless, I have a feeling that Matthew Vaughn is going to bring a whole different sort of tone to X-Men: First Class so I actually think that a realistic, updated version of the classic costumes seen above would work well on the big screen. If not those, then at least something with some personality please! Something similar to the Astonishing X-Men costumes would also work in my opinion!

1. Introduce Cable

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It’s about time we saw this character on the big screen! His slightly complicated and convoluted history might make it a little difficult to explain his origins in this movie but they wouldn’t necessarily have to right away. If they really are planning on making X-Men: First Class a reboot in the style of J. J. Abrams Star Trek then bringing Cable in to “change the timeline” would be the perfect plot device in order to do that. Yes, it’s not exactly necessary but if Kevin Bacon is going to play Mr. Sinister, or even if he’s not, Cable’s introduction would open up a pile of new storylines and if that would then lead to a solo movie or even…wait for it…a Deadpool/Cable movie, then I’m sure we can agree that would be awesome! Not only that, but with all the mutants that Matthew Vaughn is introducing, if Cable sticks around we could just end up with another spin-off in the form of either New Mutants or X-Force! The fact is, the introduction of this character would lead to a whole host of new opportunities and storylines for future X-Men movies!

So, there you have it! They’re pretty much all the things I’d like to see in X-Men: First Class that would, along with a decent story and actors, keep me happy! If you’d like to vote for which of my ideas you like the most, I’ve included a poll below, but otherwise be sure to share your thoughts on mine as well as suggesting your own in the usual place! And as usual, thanks for reading!

lol, you said "titbits"

lol, anyway, i agree with most of those. I just think that introducing Cable in an origin story is a little much. at this point, Scott and Jean haven't even knocked boots yet. in order to do Cable, i think they need to show scott and jean do the nasty, have a kid, then send him to the future. then have Cable come back in a later movie as a surprise. I think Cable is too good a character to just shoe-horn him in all willie-nillie.

but good article josh!

@JoshW well said and very valid points!! Love the idea of the introducion of Cable and changing the timeline!! What a great way to erase the events of X-Men 3 and to shape the team (AND THE PHOENIX) into the way they should be! Why can't guys (and gals) like you make these movies??!!

Haha overall, well done and I agree with everything. Even though it really doesn't count, at least we kinda (KINDA) saw a Sentinel in X-Men 3...it was weak don't get me wrong, but it was something :D I hope they do materialize in this film(s)

@ joshw yes i agree with most of this,i just hate fox.

this is how i wanted the films to go.

x-men
1.the team - the original five
2.the villain - magneto
3.after the credits moment magneto talking to a group of mutants that he has gathered together.

x-men 2
1.the team-the original five
2.the villains - magneto & the original brotherhood of evil mutants (quicksilver, scarlett witch, mastermind, blob & toad.)
3.after credits moment a production line showing the sentinels being assembled.

x-men 3
1.the teams-x-men & the brotherhood of evil mutants team up.
2.villains-the sentinels
3.after the credits moment professor x talking to cyclops about expanding the currant team.

this could start another trilogy that introduces wolverine, colossus, storm, nightcrawler, banshee, thunderbird & sunfire.

1. I want a piece of Alice Eve

The other if you like to include it is. I wish the rights to the characters had expire already so Marvel can run it.

Reboot for sure. Start from the beginning. I have no doubt that it will be entertaining with Vaughn as director but I'm not really too excited about this. Love the eye candy but can they act? Does it even matter? Better question being how do you mess up x-men? Formula is already played out for you in nearly 50 years of stories

I think the original five with the first film used as a vehicle to introduce maybe Iceman or Angel as the newest member of the team. Save the sequel to start introducing the second gen characters like Storm or Colossus. Magneto as the villian with the founding of the Brotherhood maybe??

They should follow the recent FIRST CLASS comic closely. THAT WAS A GREAT COMIC!!!
MoonDoggyX
MoonDoggyX - 8/9/2010, 1:18 PM
Man, this NEEDS to be a reboot! How can you have the original 5 together in Fox's X-Verse...? There's about a 30 year age difference between Bobby Drake and Hank McCoy! And, its just hard to get excited about prequels in general because no matter how much danger the characters are in, we already know how things must end up...
Hellmont
Hellmont - 8/9/2010, 1:22 PM
I like all 10 ideas .......and I agree with you the 2 first Singer films were sh!ty and that quack Brett Rattner for shoving the X-Men franchise even deeper into the sewer. I hate the fact that singer is the producer for the film. I've said this before and I dont care if I get sh!t for it but in my opinion the fact that he is gay can affect the out come of the film tremendously. X-men 1 and 2 lacked maxi and Superman was light on action and he compromised
Superman's behavior giving supes stalker behavioral traits and a bastard little super child.
I hope that Vaughn will deliver a decent XMen Film.

comicb00kguy - 8/9/2010, 1:32 PM
Good list, Josh, with one exception we'll get to. If I may so indulge, I'd like to address this list point by point:
10. Emma Frost's cleavage: I don't think many of us will argue about wanting to see that! It would be out of character if Emma was NOT dressed in a very sexy manner. Let's just see her villainous. She's a lot better as a serious threat to the team that can go mentally with Jean and/or Chuck.
9. Shared Fox universe: EXCELLENT idea! They could make a ton of money with this if done right, so why not? Plus, the FF and X-Men do have history with one another.
8. Easter eggs: every good Comic Movie should have a few of these scattered around for eagle-eyed fans to spot. It adds a greater feel of authenticity to the whole thing, plus it can be a lot of fun
7. No Wolverine: 'Nuff said. But with legions of Wolverine fanboys ready to burn down Fox if their boy isn't front and center of every scene, expect to see more of the same with him. At least Jackman is a good Wolverine, but I might mention that he's too tall.
6. Cyclops a leader, not a whiner: This is absolutely the Scott Summers that I want to see on-screen- the decisive leader that Xavier trained him to be. Scott is a great leader and should be portrayed as such. If we need a whiner in this film, stick Angel in this thing. That's what he's best at.
5. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch: They're probably Fox's, so I agree: let's use them in some capacity. Both have interesting powers and an interesting familial connection to Magneto. I'd prefer them to be in the Avengers, but I doubt we see that.
4. Original five: I don't mind if we see "guest" heroes working with them, or in cameo roles, but the stars should be the original five members of the X-Men. No more, no less.
3. Sentinels: They're one of the X-Men's longest-running and most popular villains (plus, who doesn't want to see giant robots?). It would be nice to see X-Men fighting someone/something BESIDES Magneto, who is becoming the X-Men's Luthor. Give Mags a rest, or show him as an ally to Xavier, who is ready to turn on him as the credits roll.
2. Costumes: ABSOLUTELY. I HATED the motocross outfits the team was forced to wear in previous films. At the very least, have them IN costume and have something bad happen that inspires the motocross look for the original film. That ties in the movies, and at least gives us one film with the X-Men in costume like they should be.
1. Cable: Here's where I disagree. I've NEVER been a fan of Cable, and if he DID have to show up in an X-film, this would NOT be the one where it should happen. This is supposed to be the team's early years, and Cable just doesn't fit in there.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 8/9/2010, 1:33 PM
I like all of your points minus Cable. I think when Cable was first introduced, that is the exact point where X-Men continuity went all to Hell. When they started time jumping around with Cable we started getting multiple versions of the exact same story.

You know, looking back on the X movies now, they could have been remedied with just a couple subtle changes.

1. Instead of introducing Logan to the team when they were saved by Cyke, Jean and Storm, he should have been taking Rogue to Prof. X for help. It should have been written that he was already part of the team and was off on one of his sabbaticals.

2. Angel, Iceman, Beast Nightcrawler, Colossus and Banshee should have been acknowledged as already being X-Men. All the existing X-Men up until that point could have been acknowledged in a large painting in the mansion. It could have been explained that they simply were not around at that time. This could have allowed FOX to bring them in at any time in any future movie with any actor.

These are just a couple little things that would have made anything they wanted to do, flow much easier IMO.
AshleyJWilliams
AshleyJWilliams - 8/9/2010, 1:34 PM
Josh - The Changing the timeline idea is brilliant that way you can still count this movie in continuity but it can also be its own movie and have sequel after sequel.

Also Cable changing the timeline is a perfect Idea but I wouldnt want him to show up till after the credits so that you can count the first film as starter for the original 3 movies. But next the sequels to X Men: First Class can have Cable trying to fix what was wrong. In that sense I think Cable is a great idea, but who could play him?

Thanks guys, I appreciate your comments/feedback!

OZY: As much as I hate to say it, I think you're right about them not using the original five...unless it's a reboot, although I still have no idea about that thanks to all the mixed reports we've had lately! A shared universe would be great though even if it wont include the team-up's I'd really like to see! (Spider-Man/Human Torch for one example!)

LEE: Exactly! [frick] the past movies - the "first class" is supposed to be those five, so let's finally see them together on the big screen rather than most of the watered down versions Singer/Ratner gave us!

CDB: You make a valid point there actually. They'll probably cram this movie full of cameos anyway after Wolverine so I doubt they'd be room for Cable especially as this is supposed to be the team's origin story! Hell, Fox will only [frick] the character up anyway so maybe it is best to leave well alone..! Or, as you said, it could be best to wait. Guess we'll have to see whether Matthew Vaughn is able to make a decent movie under Fox!

UnfriendlySpidey: Catching a glimpse of a Sentinel was cool but also so frustrating I wanted to punch Brett Ratner in the face! (I wont tell you what I wanted to do by the closing credits, lol!) I agree that the introduction of Cable would be a nice way of seperating First Class from the past movies continuity errors...however, as this is Fox I'm not holding my breath that they'll do the sensible thing! Instead, it'll probably be another mess like Wolverine was!

deadpool72: Something like that is exactly how the franchise should have been handled...and we probably would've ended up with something as awesome as that if Marvel Studios held the rights to the X-Men! ;(

Hellmont: My friend, I could spend all day listing the reasons why I think Bryan Singer should never be allowed near another CBM! The fact he has no respect for the source material and let's his personal feelings about things like homophobia affect his perspective when it comes to these characters would be the biggest two!

Great article homie. Everyone is going to give you sh!t about #4, but you know what....YOUR RIGHT!
If they had half a brain they would fix the continuity with the comics with Cable, just as you've said....but this is FOX.

I, personally, will be downloading the TORRENT of this film.....and if I hear it's awesome, i'll buy a ticket for something else,....then sneak in.

I'm only supporting a "First Class" film that actually contains THE FIRST CLASS!

HAWKS: That is a good point about Cable and I can definitely see that his introduction in this movie could lead to some confusion! As for what you're saying about the original movies, I think you make some fantastic points! Your idea about there being a nod to an original team of mutants would have been a great way to show some more backstory of the team while also leaving the door open for a movie like this, but one that would be far easier to understand and make sense of! (is it a reboot or not, lol!?!) I guess that's why I have such a problem with them hiring Bryan Singer back then. He might be a great filmaker but when he has no understanding of the source material and clearly doesnt even make an effort to take note of it, we end up with the continuity disaster we have now!

And I always wanted to see Reed Richards and Professor X together on at least a 5 minutes scene discussing something or idk, I just love them both together, knowing that we not gonna see the Illuminati so soon in Marvel Cinematic Universe(which is one of the things I love the most on Marvel)

comicb00kguy: Thanks for the detailed feedback bud! I'm glad that you pretty much agree with ALL of my suggestions (well, 9/10 anyway!) and I like the extra points you bring up about them. As for Cable, I suppose it's the fanboy in me who's desperate to see him on the big screen, but I can see why it might not work from a practical point of view! Wasnt there a rumour a while back that Marvel Studios own the rights to him anyway!? Think I'll have to look into that actually...

AshleyJWilliams: Yeah, a Star Trek style reboot is exactly what we need! And, in my opinion, Cable is the perfect character to help do that! They could of course just ignore the past movies and make this a reboot but it would be great to see the character introduced in this way! As for who should play him, I've done A LOT of fan casts and always chose Michael Biehn but he's maybe a little too old now so I really have no idea who'd be the best choice to bring him to life on the big screen!

Talontd: Haha, great points mate! :D There used to be a day when I'd go and watch anything that studios like Fox would throw our way but no more! I'm not going to pay to see any old crap just to put money in their pockets to make even more of it! (which is why I watched Jonah Hex and The Losers online...even though the latter was ok!) If the original five arent in this, I'll still go and see it. But only if it get a lot of good reviews! Even then, I'd have second thoughs because I'm not paying to see the characters I love treated poorly. Your idea about sneaking in is actually pretty good, lol!

Thanks again for your comments everyone! :) I'm doing my best to reply to as many of you as I can, lol!

Destroyer: Yeah, those two are probably two of the most important things on this list to be honest! After Kick-Ass, I'm really hoping Vaughn will make a great film!

UnfriendlySpidey: Believe me, I'm already waiting for Fox to [frick] yet another one of their superhero movies up - they havent made a single good one as of yet IMO!

tea: Hmmm...after looking up a few more pictures of Eve, I'm beginning to see what you mean. Emma Frost's boobs are supposed to be epic so let's just hope they can make 'em look a little better with some sellotape, chicken fillets and CGI! ;D As for her Mark Valley sized head? There's nothing that can fix that, lol!

We really can't have the original 5 though, as it's part of the establishes x-men film series.

I'd like to see Eric become Magneto. Beginning with just disagreeing with Charles. Manipulating a few students. Then starting the brotherhood

DEATHLOK'S SIMPLE 3 MOVIE STORY ARC:

The Uncanny X-men

We are introduced to the original 5 X-Men (Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Marvel Girl) who face off against the mutant hunting Sentinels and their creator Bolivar Trask. Towards the end when the X-Men rush to destroy the Sentinels' home base, we see that someone has beat them to it. Xavier recognizes Magneto's handy work.

Children of the Atom

In the sequel, several years have gone by since battling the Sentinels. Xavier suspects Magneto is out there and is waiting for him to strike. When he finally does, the X-Men defend the humans from his attacks then go after him for a final confrontation. However Magneto surprises and captures them. With the team out of commission, Prof. X is forced to find new recruits to mount a rescue mission, which include Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Storm and Colossus. They are able to save the old team and defeat Magneto.

X-Men: Legacy

For a third installment, we find the X-Men with two new members, Rogue and Gambit. Beast, Iceman and Angel have went their separate ways. We are introduced to the time displaced Bishop who has come back to warn the X-Men of a terrible future which must be prevented. It is his belief that it is the direct result of assassinations of key political figures carried out by mutants. When the X-Men investigate, they discover that someone called Mr. Sinister is behind the plot. They are able to defeat him, but before he dies he tells them to be wary, for the apocalypse is coming.

I'll leave it at that for now, but obviously the third film would be a great lead-in for a film about Cable in which he battles Apocalypse for the future of all mankind with aid from the X-Men and any number of fan favorite mutants.

I too want to reboot with the original 5 vs. Magneto.
But I also want the "Uncanny cast" brought in for the second.

It's so easy, it's almost scary. Original 5 get captured by weird island, Krakatoa (sp?).
Then Prof X recruits. Uncanny team gets to
Krakatoa to find Avalanche controlling island and Magneto and team torturing Original 5. Glory ensues.

Third film is Sentinels and all mutants vs. Government.

FOX!! It doesn't have to be as hard as you've made it!!
Fix it with a reboot, please.
