In an exclusive interview with SHH, Kinberg spoke about the sequel to X-Men: First Class that's currently in the works with Mathew Vaughn once again in the director's chair. He doesn't reveal anything specific about the story, but he does say that as well as the central relationship between Charles (James McAvoy) and Erik (Michael Fassbender), there will also be more focus put on the burgeoning relationship between Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), which seemed to come to a pretty abrupt end at the climax of the first movie.

"I'm not allowed to even breathe a word of any sort of details but I can say that the things that we thought worked well in 'First Class' were the characters, especially the four or five lead characters. The Charles-Erik relationship was obviously incredibly resonant and James and Michael did such an amazing job as those characters. Jen Lawrence and Nick Hoult, that's a really interesting relationship between Raven and Hank, so we're really going to be focusing on character and personally I really liked the period aspect of 'First Class' so we may well do that."

Kinberg also addressed the first movie's somewhat messed up continuity with the previous X-Men films. As great as First Class was, it did seem to pick and choose which elements it kept in canon and which it basically rebooted. So should we view these new X movies as prequels or reboots?

"It's an interesting thing and I wouldn't know how to define it because we tried to be as respectful as possible in 'First Class' to the 'Singer-verse,' to 'X1-3' really, and there are places where we diverged from that and broke that, but there were other places where we were really respectful to, like even little silly things like the Rebecca Romijn cameo, so we are constructing it with 'X1-3' in mind. There may be some places where we don't line up perfectly but it is something we are very aware of and want to be respectful of and the people who are responsible for those movies--Lauren Schuler-Donner, Bryan Singer and Fox--are all involved."

He admits that it is neither a reboot, nor a continuation, I assume? Ah, well...I'll just enjoy it the way it is.

Face it, FOX are not giving up the X-Men, that's one of their cash cows. We'd have a better chance at DD or FF going to Marvel than X-Men. I have a feeling that one day, Marvel will have all their characters back.

X-Men: FC was a really good movie, I enjoyed it. I put that right after X2.

another interesting part of the interview:

he was talking about Matthew and then said this:

" I thought he did such a great job with 'First Class' that it gave us all license to do some really ambitious things with the sequel."

I wonder how ambitious they are and what would they be....

I think they need to take the fight to the streets.

haha i agree with Stranger. I like Fassbender and that was really it. I tell my friends all the time that FC was a good movie, just a terrible Xmen movie. Wat I really think they need to do is just announce that theyre going in a new direction and OFFICIALLY rebooting the franchise.

They never really said was FC so I think if they just say "we're rebooting the franchise" and do everythng RIGHT, maybe we'll get a really proper movie of Xaviers men including Sentinels and the like.

Fans and their crazy demands.
Remember when we were going nuts because Venom was announced to be a villain in Spider-man 3? Careful what you wish for.
War Machine - what was the point of that?
I'm worried about Thanos too, but different story.

Sentinels look great on paper. On screen, how can you justify robots larger than buildings "protecting" civilians?
gambgel
gambgel - 7/14/2012, 9:42 AM
yeah....

but since they are part of the comics, we can understand the fans wishing to see the sentinels on one movie at least. It would be really epic to see something like that with the mutants, so I think its just a matter of time to Fox do it.

They had better fix Beast, he looked pathetic. Other than that, I thought FC was excellent.

Yep, Vaughn saying he didn't give a shit about the other franchise is certainly showing it respect. Let's see where else their "re-imagination" ends up going in the next one. Can't be any worse than First Class, which was an "okay" film, but lousy comic book adaptation.

First Class was better than every marvel movies sans Iron Man and Avengers. Yeah it wasn't accurate, but people need to give respect where its due

mmm I don't care about the relationship between Beast and Mystique, I want a young SCOTT and JEAN
gambgel
gambgel - 7/14/2012, 11:14 AM
What's the worst continuity issue?

A. To make some changes like not respecting an old line of a sequel 6 years ago (First Class-X1)

or

B. To change one of the main actors from one sequel to another? (Iron man 1-Iron man 2, Thor-Thor 2, TIHulk-Avengers)

¿?

The Mystique/Beast relationship was one of my least favourite things. I'm annoyed they wanna revisit that :/

BUT I do want them to start showing Mystique learning how to fight the way she does. The one constant thing I've loved through all of the X-Men films are the Mystique combat scenes. And we didn't get one in First Class :(
