BOX OFFICE: Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Passes $1 Billion Worldwide!

New reports indicate that the latest instalment in the popular Disney franchise has passed $1 billion at the global box office! Hit the jump to check out the details...

Deadline report that the fourth instalment in the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise has now hit a box office milestone of over $1 billion globally. 2006's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest also made roughly the same amount, and with 2010's Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3, this means Disney now have four or five pictures in the list of the 10 highest grossing films of all time. Wonder whether we'll see The Avengers join that list>

Here are some specific details courtesy of the site.

Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films have yet to confirm this Summer 2011 milestone yet. But unofficially rival studios tell me that the franchise's fourth film Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides just crossed $1 billion in global box office today. The pic had grossed $995.4M globally as of June 30th, and $232,1M domestically as of July 1st.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said of the news, "This is such a beloved franchise, and Johnny Depp is such a huge worldwide star. The combination of all these talents was really something."

After the last three movies, and mixed critical reception of this one, I decided to give On Stranger Tides a miss, but I guess the franchise still has plenty of life left in it yet! Don't be surprised to see the announcement of a fifth movie sometime in the next few months.

I don't think The Avengers will make $1Bil+.

It will make alot though.

TDKR & The Amazing Spider-Man are going to exceed the $Bil mark.

Heck yeah!
Shows once again that people can enjoy a movie while the critics take a shit on it.

I don't understand all the backlash against On Stramger Tides, it was a hundred times better than Dead Man's Chest and a thousand times better than At World's End. The first one is still the best though.

Depp is one of those rare actors that is just really good in any role you put him in.

POTC: On Stranger Tides has currently got a 33% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Green Lantern has got a 27%, not far off, just shows that sometimes a film critic analysis, wont affect the box office. Although, Pirates is coming from a good series.

@ joshw

i'd love to see the avengers join that list, but i think the amazing spider-man will be the only cbm to hit a billion next year.

It was definitely better then the heavily convoluted At Worlds End. Like I said before bad reviews don't kill a movie but bad word of mouth does, most of the people I know don't give a shit about reviews from critic.

rubbish movie.
some movies just seem immune to bad word of mouth and poor reviews.

That's because a review has squat to do with entertainment. People pay for entertainment, not just a black or white view of a movies technical values! Critics will NEVER understand that because they're far too elitist.

ugh. I'm never going to see this movie. Dont much care for it.

@Ceejay I disagree. If that was the case, a movie like Wanted would have gotten terrible terrible reviews across the board.

But it did not. It actually got favorable reviews because its just pure entertainment. Same with Transformers 3 right now.

Yeah...Sadly Harry Potter will be the most grossed movie of the year right behind Transformers =D.

I cant get it! Why?! Aside from Johnny Depp who's always amazing even if they hire him to sneeze and go home, nothing in Pirates of the Caribian movies ever was that good on any level... I couldnt so much as sit through any of the previous 3 past 30 mins!

I'm beginning to think The Dark Knight stands alone as the only decent movie in the over $billion box office record coz the rest is just a trash list of CGI and 3D extravaganzas.
Hell, I wont be surprised if Transformer 3 passed the billion marker as well!

Avengers won't make a billion because they didn't film it in 3d , Transformers will also hit a billion too .

POTC4 is the worst in the franchise. Not a bad movie, but nothing like the previus. This is a lesson for the bad movies(TROTF) lovers.

I think avengers has a good shot of hitting a billion. a lot of non comic book fans i know are already hyped for it. TDKR might make a billion too but i don't think the public will be quite as interested without the joker in there. i don't see spiderman hitting a billion though.

Ppl a billion dollar is a rare profit for a movie. Every movie isn't going to reach that. I'm surprised to see this movie reach that, because I haven't heard any reviews, and barely anything about it.

I like Deep, but I'll pass on this one. They're beating a dead horse.

So, what makes people think TDKR "deserves" to pass 1 billion mark?? How the hell do ya know it will be that good?

So poor reviews for spider-man 3 is going to effect the new spider-man when the reviews previous Instalments of TF2 and PotC 3 had no effect on the new movies just released. Okay then...

Engrosses the least out of its franchise domestically, but makes the most world wide. Huh.

Transformers was never set to make a billion, the last movie opened in over 200 more cinemas than this new movie which equates to anything up to 6-700 more screens! In fact because of their 3D initiative, TF3 has opened in the least amount of cinemas out of the trilogy but yet it's doing extremely well!

TF2 opened in 4234 theatres on a wednesday with tuesday midnight previews and took weekend total of $108,966,307 even though its haul from wed-sun was $200.1 million. That same debut weekend it did internationally $190 million so amassed $390.3 mill Worldwide in 5 days!

TF3 opened in just in 2700 theatres on its tuesday midnight previews then expanded to 4013 cinemas on wednesday. Its fri-sun weekend total was $97,400,000 million but from wed-sun it has totalled $162. That's only $38 million behind TF2 considering the far fewer screenings it having every day! Internationally though its beaten TF2 with $210 from overseas, that's $20 million more than TF2 making its 5 day world wide total $372.1 million! That's only $18 million behind TF2 with less theatres and 60% of its domestic gross from 3D screenings which is something the other two TF movies didn't have to deal with.

With just a $195 production budget and only 5 days with Harry Potter still two week away, TF3 is pretty much on track to about the same as TF2. TF3 has also just beaten Spiderman 2's 7 year standing Independence Day weekend record with its $97 million weekend!
