Christian Bale Considering Villain Role In Spike Lee's Oldboy!

Variety have just revealed a list of movies that Bale might potentially star in after The Dark Knight Rises. They confirm Darren Aronofsky's Noah as a possibility, and also mention Spike Lee's Oldboy remake..

Christian Bale has a clean slate when shooting wraps on Christopher Nolan's third and final Bat flick. But now Variety have posted a list of movies in development with some high profile directors that Bale is apparently looking at. And one is another CBM, although a very different sort..

..They include a third remake of “A Star is Born” starring Beyonce Knowles and directed by Clint Eastwood; Fox’s “Gold,” directed by Michael Mann; a remake of Korean thriller “Old Boy” that Spike Lee will direct; Relativity’s “Out of the Furnace” directed by Scott Cooper; and “Noah,” Darren Aronofsky’s biblical epic at Paramount.

Not much more info is known except that the role in Oldboy is said to be the villain. And what a villain that would be! Evil doesn't begin to describe this sick bastard. Anyway, Variety also say that Bale has not been officially attached to any of the above projects, nor has he even been identified as a front runner so this may all still be very much up in the air. But if he was to choose one of these projects, which one would you like to see him in?

Totally agree! Just another Americanized copy to show the rest of the world how wonderfully original we are. No thanks.

I cant believe that racist douche Spike Lee is the one gthat gets to re-make this. And of course since its Lee he HAS to make the bad guy White. It amazes me how his films are accepted by anyone, knowing how racist he is.

the oldboy villain isn't as psychotic as patrick bateman. but, i think bale can pull of the depressed villain. this movie would own if choi min-sik can make a cameo. (such a good actor <3)

lol at Tevi's comment.

Anyway, I was against this remake until Lee got involved and I heard it was to be more of a direct adap of the Manga than the original was. But we;l see.

While I like the Korean movie, people should keep in mind - that one was also simply taking FOREIGN material and replacing EVERYONE with people of their country. I love the Korean movie, I do and I don't care for Spike Lee at all, but seriously: Why would Korea get a pass for this and USA not?

@paptschik because people who have seen the original versions of movies that get re-made like to feel like they're in this exclusive club, so they either ignore this or just don't care. i've probably seen the "originals" before most of them did and its really a bit silly and juvenile.

@paptschik, soaponarope....

I don't have anything really against Spike Lee, probably because I haven't really seen too much of his films. This goes out to the idea in general, although I'll cite a specific example.

"Let the Right One In" was mentioned earlier. Here's a quick, but spoilerific synopsis. A small neighborhood in Sweden (or more specifically, a boy named Oskar) is visited by a vampire, that of a twelve year-old girl named Eli, who has just moved in with her "father" Håkan. Oskar develops a relationship with her which grows complicated when Håkan, Eli's thrall, botches his bloody errands and the vampire is forced to fend for herself. Although the story is very simple, rather predictable, it is quite beautiful.

Two years later, the (Swedish) book it is based on is adapted for an American audience. It's setting is changed to New Mexico, names are obviously changed (no biggie), and certain scenes are almost completely recreated but with different lighting/actors/effects. Here's the quick rundown of the problems with this version (which seems like it was just based on the original movie, not the book)...
*Chloë Moretz is the vampire, who should look like an effeminate boy (because Eli is short for Elias... he was castrated before becoming a vampire), but instead is unquestionably a girl. Why is this such a problem? In the book, there is a memorable question that Oskar asks himself after finding out that Eli is really a boy: "That he could somehow accept that she was a vampire, but the idea that she was somehow a boy, that that could be...harder. He knew the word. Fag. [frick]ing fag. Stuff that Jonny said. To think it was worse to be gay than to be..."
Well apparently the director agreed. While this is left a bit ambiguous in the original, there is a suspicious scar on Eli, but Oskar accepts him regardless.
*The neighborhood is detached and absent of all friends who enjoy each other's company at the pub. This is important because in stark contrast to Eli and Oskar (who are themselves, very alienated), these aging beer buddies have lives that are basically destroyed inadvertently by Eli's thirst.
*Rather than have (Håkan) be a homeless pedophile who Eli took in as his servant and thrall, the American version places him with Eli back when he was Oskar's age, alluded to as a former love interest.

You what's really messed up though? The director of the original was offered the remake.

I'm going to stop there just because this is getting a bit long, but I hope you can understand my concern.
Oldboy was adapted first by Park Chan-Wook, who is known for making some truly gritty, bloody, controversial, emotionally charged, sexually explicit thrillers.... this is while excluding Oldboy. Warner Bros is already in the process of remaking another of his movies...
