NO TIME TO DIE Star Lashana Lynch Says The Film Fixes The JAMES BOND Franchise's Female Characters

The James Bond franchise doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to the portrayal of female characters, but star Lashana Lynch believes No Time to Die is the film that finally makes that right!

The James Bond franchise has a problematic history with female characters, using them either as damsels in distress or as little more than eye candy for 007 to seduce. That has slowly started to change in recent years, and in Daniel Craig's final film as the iconic spy, No Time to Die, it seems the portrayal of women will be handled in a way that's more representative of today's world.

Captain Marvel star Lashana Lynch is expected to play a lead role in this story, and talking to TechRadar, the actress explained that she put work into developing Nomi into a strong character. Luckily for her, the character on the page was well-written by a team who had similar goals to her.

"I think with women's current agency, [it's] the way in which they view themselves and the way in which they portray themselves as being – with the women that I've been in contact with – completely authentic and completely knowing that they're enough," Lynch says. "You see that oozing through the characters in this, both the female characters that have [already] existed within the franchise, and the brand new ones like myself."

"You just have this whole sense of empowerment that is really important to feel when you're going to work, but also important to show younger generations coming up."

The future of the James Bond franchise is unlikely to be female as Tom Hardy is reportedly being lined up as the next 007. However, it does look like women will continue to be an important part of the stories that end up on screen, and not just femme fatales or sexualized love interests.

Wow that title is kind of insulting to the great Bond girls of the past. Admittedly most of them are just eye candy, but there are more than a few well written strong characters, not just in the modern era, but also the classic. Not much that needs to be fixed.

@dracula - One good female character doesn’t rlly matter when there are like 3 other bad ones in the same film.

I wouldn’t really count M as a “strong female character” either, as shes barely in the movies.

Yes, we never had female bond characters with any agency. Like casino royale, where vesper held an authority position over bond, called bond out when he was being an idiot, and later turned out to be a sort of villain who managed to use her charm to trick bond into essentially giving up the film's macguffin. Or theres quantum of solace, where the female lead has her own unique goal of revenge that she ultimately succeeds in on her own strengths. Or maybe just the general fact that since the Brosnan era we've had bond's boss as a female character who's been shown to be very deserving of that role.

Clearly the bond franchise needed this movie to fix its problem with female characters, and this isn't just a clear example of someone who hasnt watched the franchise she's now a part of.

I kinda agree. Any real memorable character in recent Bond movies is Vesper (for me atleast)

@bkmeijer - she was great, although while Quantum Of Solace did suck, the main bond girl in that did stand on her own as a bad ass, hell there was no romance between her and bond

@dracula - I remember Olga Kurylenko and Gemma Arterton, but not much about their characters. Might be because the last time I saw it was when it was released though

@bkmeijer - She was great but my first is and will always be Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo aka Tracy Bond played by the legendary Diana Rigg, rest her soul🙏 .

Good for her, I think she’s a good actress, but that statement was a whole lot of nothing. I’ll pass judgment on her portrayal after watching it on screen.

Ummm....they weren't broken. They are Bond girls. They are part of the very fabric of Fleming's books and the entire film franchise. 'Changes' or 'Alters' would be a better word for the headline.

I try to remind myself whenever comments like this arise that this is being said by a person whose profession is acting and they tend to be a bit dramatic. Will wait to see the finished product.

Yeah, let's tell Ian Fleming he needs to "fix" his stories while we're at it!
