As expected, Paramount Pictures has made more major changes to its release schedule as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For starters, Top Gun Maverick has moved from June 24th, 2020 to December 23rd, 2020. Due to the change, Chris Pratt's new sci-fi movie The Tomorrow War is now undated.
On the plus side, A Quiet Place Part 2 just landed a new release date after being postponed from its original March 20th slot. Now, it's coming our way in time for Labor Day weekend on September 4th.
There's more news to go with that, however; The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run just got delayed from May 22nd, 2020 to July 31st, 2020. Now, the summer blockbuster season has essentially been cancelled, and there's still nothing to say theaters will be open by the fall (it's certainly the hope things will mostly be back to normal by then, though).
It's noted that studios and exhibitors are prepared for the possibility that theaters will have re-opened their doors by June, but there's some concern over whether moviegoers will be willing to visit them, hence why Paramount is looking to release a big budget sequel like Top Gun Maverick over Christmas when it stands a chance of making back what it cost them to produce it!
There's no denying that seeing big films like this land new release dates in 2020 feels like a positive sign, but with so much uncertainty surrounding what the future holds in store, no guarantees can be made right now (just look at how China closed its theaters immediately after re-opening them).
We'll keep you guys updated.
