Giancarlo Volpe recently released a comic strip explaining animation focus groups on Tumblr. Initially, Volpe's comic shows he was optimistic about the information he would glean from the group, despite misgivings from executive producer Bruce Timm. The participating kids provided some interesting information, but the way the moderators interpreted their reactions and feedback was ultimately a source of frustration.

You can see Volpe's story below, including a conclusion inspired by the recent home video release of Green Lantern: The Animated Series.

The series focuses on the adventures of Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of Sector 2814, and his partner Kilowog. Hal Jordan travels to "Frontier Space" the region of space at the edge of the Guardians' territory, where Green Lanterns are being picked off by the Red Lanterns. Atrocitus, their leader, wants revenge for the destruction of his world by the Manhunters, the now-decommissioned android enforcers of the Guardians. After defeating Atrocitus, Hal and Kilowog adopt Razer, a maverick Red Lantern into their fold. Their next great threat is the Anti-Monitor, who seeks to literally consume the Universe.

GLTAS was a great show! Definitely the best translation of the GL universe on screen.

@DangerMan
I may be in the minority when I say I LOVE BtB. It provides a fresh new take in the different stories and it really is starting to get good (the show stopped at episode 11 but I found episodes 12,13 and 14 online and they have RA's AL GHUL in the flesh in those episodes. I'm not finished but I'm excited to see what happens next

I really hope Beware the Batman isn't cancelled. Best Batman TV show so far. Before you disagree, give it a few episodes. I'd say it's better than Batman The Animated Series.

@MrBatfleck After the Ra's storyline they introduce Dent. I think this is when they start introducing more mainstream villains.

That was actually really cool. I didn't follow GLTAS when it was on. I think I'll give it a go now that it's on Netflix.

I enjoyed this show. The only thing I didn't like about it was the CGI look. That even made the show cost more money. I would have preferred the traditional hand drawn look instead. Who knows that could have even played a part in getting the show canceled.

I liked Ron Perlman as Sinestro. It was unfortunate that he wasn't in more episodes. I also was disappointed Green Lantern: The Animated Series didn't get to do the Black Lanterns. It showed the blue, pink, orange, yellow & red. I thought the character of Razer was an interesting one. I was wondering if he would join the main DC Universe like how Harley Quinn did after being in Batman: The Animated Series.

So I wish this show and Young Justice were still on. Maybe next time WB should do a focus group with older people. Because I can bet you none of these kids even watched the show. But I can say lots of adults including myself watched this and Young Justice.

I know it won't happen but with Green Lantern & Young Justice being now on Netflix. I would like WB to make new seasons for those shows. Having their new seasons being Netflix exclusive would be great for WB & Netflix.

*sigh* the cancellation of this show and Young Justice proves that the Cartoonnetwork executives don't care about quality.

The same should be said for The Clone Wars then, however the show wasn't canceled. The Clone Wars had a similar tone that both Young Justice and Green Lantern did. If they wanted, both of them could've been moved to Toonami as well, which probably would've been a better idea from the start.

This show was okay, loved Young Justice. Why they canceled the shows and replaced them with Teen Titans and that shity batman crap.

I think it should be specified that Young Justice and Green Lantern were NOT cancelled due to low ratings. They were cancelled because YJ had a large female audience and since (according to CN) girls don't buy toys and the company is to cheap to make another product they closed production. With GL, CN depended on toy sales which were non-existent since the toy company (don't know which) was not producing them. To add to the toy sales, the shows took moderate money to produce.

Ratings do not rule the fate of a show, toy sales plus production costs do (that's why utter shit like Johnny Test is still going).
