WB Animation Supervising Producer On The New, Connected Animated Universe

The new, connected WB Animation film universe kicked off in Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox and continued in Justice League: War and Son of Batman. Batman: Assault on Arkham is standalone.

James Tucker, WB Animation Supervising Producer, spoke earlier this year about establishing new contnuity across the slate of DC animated adaptations and with the release of Son of Batman, he's expounding on that idea further.  Previously, Tucker stated, "We’re going to focus on the newer material, and basically setting up our own version of the New 52. We’re films, so the New 52 doesn’t really make sense for us, because we’re not doing 52 movies a year, or a month (laughs). Basically, we connected with the New 52 to do more contemporary stories, because the earlier line of DVD movies were classics. Some things adapt well, some things don’t. We had to do something to give ourselves more creative freedom. We’re using the New 52 world as a launching point where we can kind of tell our own stories, kind of like we did on Justice League Unlimited. Not necessarily what the comics were doing at that specific time, but it allowed us to do our own version of specific characters. So that’s what we’re doing with the New 52 world."

And in a new interview with CBR, Tucker further discusses the idea of using the New 52 as a basis for establishing continuity across the animated films.  "The thing is we want continuity, but we don't want to be hamstrung by it. So if there's a story that happened pre-New 52 that we think is a strong story, we'll adapt it into our universe. So that it doesn't rule out things that have already been pre-New 52," said Tucker.  He continued, "We have a lot of plans, I can say that. The world's wide open. We don't really have a lot of restrictions on that. I mean, I just wish we could do 10 a year because -- no, I don't, because that's a lot of work. But there are ideas we want to do and characters I want to tap into. It takes time to get to them. We only do two a year that are in continuity, so it takes a while to get around to everyone. So as long as each movie has something or somebody in it that no one's seen on DVD before, I think we'll be accomplishing our goals."

Currently, the plan is for WB Animation to release two films a year that are established within the newly created "New 52" continuity and one standalone project.  This year, we have Justice League: War and Son of Batman in continuity and Batman: Assault on Arkham outside of continuity.  Expect next year's crop of DC animated films to be announced at San Diego Comic-Con.  Previously, Tucker has stated that he'd like to do a Woner Woman-centric Justice League film and to possibly tackle an adaptation of Mark Millar's Red Son.

Son of Batman was released on digital dowload and on-demand on April 22.  It will be available for purchase on DVD and blu-ray on May 6th.  Batman: Assault on Arkham will be released later this year.

Hopefully they'll still do pre-New 52 stories and not focus solely on Batman.

I like the concept but the way it's been done so far I just haven't liked, mainly just as the comic stories were better and didn't need to be changed as such, I get they want to put a different spin on it but still... Just hasn't been done too well, they've got a long way to go to surpass Under the Red Hood, wish they'd make a animated Birthright though...

I also think these films would be better off if they weren't connected, but that's just my opinion

this will probably lead to the Superman-Wonderwoman ala Mr. & Mrs. Smith saga

DC Animation is top notch IMO.
Having said that, JL: War, although amazing IMO, wasn't their best movie.
It was pretty entertaining though.

And my issue with son of batman is that Damian wasn't older.
He looks like a 12 year in the movie, and he's beating deathstroke.

If they had made him somewhere around the age of 18, it would have been more believable.

Justice League War and Son Of Batman were both awful. Not a great start.

I'm a big fan of the DC Animated Universe, they usually put out a nice Blu-Ray / DVD package, keep up the good work.

If Batman: Assault on Arkham sucks, which by the looks of it, it'll be mediocre atleast, I'm giving up on the New 52. It really is uninteresting, plot for Son of Batman was beyond bad, JL:War was a good piece of entertainment, and the plot's okay I guess. Both are enjoyable, but nothing special. Hope Batman changes my opinion.

Son Of Batman was garbage, and much to my dismay, Assault On Arkham doesnt even feel like its apart of the game franchise. They really need to either take risks with smaller characters or remain true to the bigger ones! Wonder Woman was disgraceful in JLW, how nobody had a problem with this in studio is astounding.

Different spin... more like crapping on my spaghetti and calling it meatballs.

Thats all fine and dandy, but please ACTUALLY do stuff from the new 52 and not just hordes of more Batman movies.

I enjoyed JL War, the batman and GL dialogue was pretty funny and I also enjoyed Captain Marvel. It all felt rushed in the way they connected and didn't seem to know each other but the fight scenes were pretty fun! Son of Batman was okkkk I would have liked to see Deathstroke be more badass as he was mainly the mastermind in the film with no real fighting from him. I'm a fan of all comic book companies but DC is definitely way ahead of Marvel. The iron man and hulk animation movie was so boring I couldn't even finish it, which is something because I literally rewatch old animated movies by DC/Marvel weekly. I miss pre-Disney marvel animation when they had Ultimate Avengers and Doctor Strange and even Next Avengers was at least entertaining and a different story. This next one Marvel has with Iron Man/ Captain America I don't have much hope for. Although the Avengers Confidential with Black Widow and Punisher was actually a surprise to me when I saw it and I enjoyed it. Didn't think they were still putting out adult worthy cartoons like that anymore. I just wish they had more and more animation movies coming out from both comic companies as I enjoy those almost more than the live action movies. And don't even get me started on animated tv shows, both DC and Marvel have let me down miserably! Avengers EMH and Young Justice should have both run for at least 6-8 seasons. Ohh how glorious and what possibilities they could have explored!

This is stupid. Just stick to what they always did, making comic book stories come to life. No need for connecting shit.

I have to say I rather liked the DC animated movies before where they were a homage to classic stories that even have a similar illustration style of the original comic.

Son of Batman was blah....and the way they made Thalia look like black widow was absolutely terrible. DC had had the animation game locked down for a long time but the new stuff is not as good.

Son of the batman was a steaming pile.you'd think DC despises Deathstroke with how much jobbing they made him do.the quality in these animated movies are starting to drop to marvel level proportions.Just that lets just make this crap quick and move on type of vibe

@Marvel
live action sounds great and all, but you can tell stories in higher quantities with animation.

live action takes a ton of money and time to produce.
not saying i dont like it,
but i would take 10 animated movies over a flopped (Green lantern) live action.

I didn't think Son of Batman was bad.
I just had a problem with Damian Wayne being too young to have a believable fight with Deathstroke.

That nightwing damian fight/scene was hilarious though.
