Alita: Battle Angel was saddled with a rubbish February release date, but it still managed to earn an admirable $405 million on a budget of $170 million. Using the old rule of thumb that movie needs to double their budget to be considered a hit, there's really no reason a sequel can't happen.
The James Cameron-produced, Robert Rodriguez-directed movie was one of the last releases from 20th Century Fox before the Disney merger, but past reports have indicated that lucrative, iconic franchises like Alien, Predator, and Planet of the Apes will be a priority for Disney.
Collider recently caught up with Alita: Battle Angel star Christoph Waltz and after declaring that he would "Of course!" return for a sequel, he added: "I know that people liked it and aside from what others said, I loved it and I liked working on it and I liked the result."
Unfortunately, Waltz admits that he's not heard anything from Disney about a sequel, and believes the merger with Fox could be the reason why! "Maybe it doesn’t fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue," he pondered. "I have no clue."
Alita: Battle Angel is a property which could be a good fit for Disney+ either as a TV series or movie, but the huge amounts of visual effects make it an expensive project to tackle. With Rodriguez said to be working on The Mandalorian season 2, however, he may have already pitched it...
