ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Star Christoph Waltz Believe A Sequel Is Unlikely Because Of Disney

Alita: Battle Angel was a modest hit in 2019, but star Christoph Waltz is convinced that a sequel won't happen because the Robert Rodriquez property doesn't fit in with the "Disneyfication" of Fox!

Alita: Battle Angel was saddled with a rubbish February release date, but it still managed to earn an admirable $405 million on a budget of $170 million. Using the old rule of thumb that movie needs to double their budget to be considered a hit, there's really no reason a sequel can't happen.

The James Cameron-produced, Robert Rodriguez-directed movie was one of the last releases from 20th Century Fox before the Disney merger, but past reports have indicated that lucrative, iconic franchises like Alien, Predator, and Planet of the Apes will be a priority for Disney.

Collider recently caught up with Alita: Battle Angel star Christoph Waltz and after declaring that he would "Of course!" return for a sequel, he added: "I know that people liked it and aside from what others said, I loved it and I liked working on it and I liked the result."

Unfortunately, Waltz admits that he's not heard anything from Disney about a sequel, and believes the merger with Fox could be the reason why! "Maybe it doesn’t fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue," he pondered. "I have no clue."

Alita: Battle Angel is a property which could be a good fit for Disney+ either as a TV series or movie, but the huge amounts of visual effects make it an expensive project to tackle. With Rodriguez said to be working on The Mandalorian season 2, however, he may have already pitched it...

Well Disney is still doing planet of the apes and possibly alien and predator, so it can still happen, just under the fox brand.

@dracula - They're doing a Planet of the Apes reboot, not continuing the incredibly somber trilogy we just had

@TheJustinHammer - To be fair, I do think the trilogy tackled more than just racism/xenophobia in its allegories, and the notion of a deadly global pandemic spreading incredibly fast seems scarily relevant, but I do agree. They got a YA director handling it, so I feel like it'll just feel like a neutered take closer to the Tim Burton one than the ones we just had

@tmp3 - All they did was the story of Moses but with Apes.

Frees his people from slavery, leads them to a new promise land but died just as its in sight.

Exact story of Moses. Lol

Finally putting my money where my mouth is about giving shows a fare shot. Giving Agents of Shield a second chance after after i ditched it before season 2. Just finished rewatching episode 1, good start, whish Joss Whedon did more than the pilot

I really need to get around to watching this but I feel like I've heard too many good things about it so my expectations will be too high.

@Nebula - It sucks.

Did that help?

Yeah I don’t think Disney thinks that Alita doesn’t fit under their brand. They might however think that there is no money in a sequel to be made. I’m hope they don’t think that. I hope it’s no actually true. I liked the movie and want a sequel but it’s quite possibly sadly the truth.

Never took Christoph Waltz for a Disney hater

Acknowledging the nature of the beast doesn't make you a hater tho.

@Doomsday8888 - I was making a joke on how some people on here label people as "marvel haters" or "disney haters" for merely criticizing the company

Nvm then! :P
But...Heh, you're right about that!

@tmp3 - Agreed. And in this case, he wasn't even criticizing the company, but pointing out the reason they may not make a sequel.

But Disney (and I'm probably not using the correct words) releases many films that aren't "Disneyfied" under other labels (?).

Some of Quentin's films were distributed under a name that Disney owns. So, they "could" do a sequel, like Iger stated regarding Deadpool. It just wouldn't have the "Disney" label.

Sequel is unlikely because flopping. Like Disney wouldn't approve a sequel if the 1st one made any kind of significant bank.

Headline: "ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Star Christoph Waltz Believe A Sequel Is Unlikely Because Of Disney"

Christoph Waltz: "I have no clue."

Grade A journalism right there.

Movie was pretty good.

Very faithful to the comics. Had an energy about it. Cameron, Rodriguez and Salazar were all on form. It's unique.

Not "OMGyouhavetowatchitItsthebestthingEVER!!!!", but still, pretty good.

A sequel would be very much appreciated. Don't be missing a trick on this, Diz Lot of potential here.

@Himura

Yep.

"convinced" and "no clue" are NOT the same thing.

Writer: "...Christoph Waltz is convinced..."

Waltz: "I have no clue..."

And there is nothing in his statement that points to be "convinced".

I'm convinced that exaggerating/lying in the article title is an old, tired, jacked up method used to get more readers, but I have no clue.

no, they should make a sequel, the movie was good

I didn't know much about the manga, but I did enjoy the film. So if a new film comes out cool, but I'm fine if it doesn't come too.

Now what I really want is a live action Fate/Stay Night movie.

Honestly thought the film was okay. Not exactly fussed about getting a sequel.

The audiences didn't exactly storm the theaters in droves to see the first one, can't imagine they'd be any more interested in a sequel.
