Like Wonder woman? Anyone? The Flash? Come on, WB, why has Wonder Woman not made it into theatres in over 70 years? Like What The [frick]?
Also, aside from not being Japanese, Gary Oldman is not exactly the kind of guy I would picture playing The Colonel. Not unless he works out to shit over the next few years. HBC could do a pretty decent Miyako, if they CGI'd the [frick] out of her. Not bad casting that one. But please WB, make this right. Go back to the manga. Do a trilogy. There's 6 volumes of the manga, do two each. Besides, most of the stuff in the anime was from the first two volumes of the manga, anyway (then they kind of did an acid trip of the next 4 for the ending), so there would be a lot of opportunities to homage the anime there.

I haven't seen Akira or any other Japanese animated films, except for the Sonic the Hedgehog one. is Akira any good for someone who is unfamiliar with the genre?

i don't know if Akira would be the 1st one i would send you in to anime with, it is a fairly intense one, and if you are not a fan, it may look a little dated now. It is one of the greats though.

@ duke, I don't think they are going to try to make the characters look like the ones in the anime, that would look a little silly for some of the people, such as lady miyako. They will make her look more humanized, but keep the creepy attitude and actions of the characters. That would probably work more.

Best of look nabbing those actors, they would be great in those roles though so the part of me that is hoping beyond hope that this movie is good hopes they accept.

Gary Oldman? Meh I think he'd be better suited as Dr. Onishi. I'd rather see Josh Brolin in the role.

Lady Miyako wasn't adapted in the film, so it's cool that they're including her now.

Marvel72- I don't agree with making a live action film but whether we like it or not, it's happening. Just don't go see it instead of overreacting. That way we don't support it because they don't get our money.

jazzman@ i couldnt agree more.

Oldman and Carter are great actors but i dont think they can save this.

soberchimera61@ i was thinking the same thing. Oldman would fit much better in the role of Onishi or even Nezu.
jazzman
jazzman - 10/23/2011, 2:42 PM
@Mechagino

WB should not do Akira they dont know how to handle this. WB need to make a good comic book movie and they need to focus on doing a Wonder Woman movie.
Mechagino
Mechagino - 10/23/2011, 3:36 PM
So it's now forbidden to add any diversity to the comic book genre? Does it have to ALWAYS be people in tights saving the day? No, it doesn't. Yes, it would be nice to see a wonder woman movie but I would also like to see other comic books to get their time to shine in the lime light for the first time.

And how do we know they can't handle this? How many big studios have handle manga/anime before? Not a whole lot and the only front runner I can think of is WB with Speed Racer but that's because I liked it. If they get someone good to write it and learn to respect the source material, I bet you a bunch of people are going to eat their words. I myself did not care for the movie, I thought it was okay but the manga from what I've read it pretty cool. Saying WB needs to make a good comic book movie is a little redundant because they've already done it a number of times and still are.

But tell me, would you rather have Fox make the Akira movie? No, no you wouldn't.

WHO IS PLAYING AKIRA?
duncboy
duncboy - 10/23/2011, 5:20 PM
This is most likely a live action film based on the screenplay of Akira, not a complete remake. This is exactly the same relationship between The Departed and its' Chinese equivalent (which came out first), Internal Affairs (which is VERY good). I loved Akira, but let's all pray we don't see a complete "remake" vs. just a new rendition.

I still don't think this should happen, but at least they're seeking good actors for roles, so this gives me a little glimmer of hope.

@DeepFreeze: To renew interest into Akira the godfather of animes as it's call and introduce it to the general public and to gain interest on the property from the general public? :\

lol@ "Why are they ruining a good film?"

They aren't. The anime still rocks no matter how many shitty live action flicks they release. I never understood this logic, how does something new, but shitty ruin something awesome? The awesome thing...it's still awesome even if something stupid comes along later.

I'm not gonna lie, I'll probably go see this. IF it looks good. I'm always up for a re-imagining of stories I've enjoyed. If Oldman's in, I'm there, 99% of the movies I've seen with Oldman in the cast have been phenomenally good, so yea, they get Oldman, then I know there's some sort of promise of awesome. I would like to know how they're going to explain Americans running around with Japanese names...hmm.

I'm just glad those 2 directors that were attached before are nowhere to be seen, they were building a train wreck of a flick.

My god there are some cry babies losing their shit over nothing. It is a cartoon from over 20 years ago that the majority of western people haven't even seen. They remade Straw Dogs, that is the bigger slap in the face.
Grow up! As if this takes away from how great Akira is. I am keen to see what happens.
