New ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Stills Introduce Us To Villainous Cyborgs Zapan And Grewishka

Alita: Battle Angel was originally supposed to be released next month but with the likes of Aquaman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Mary Poppins Returns hitting theaters at the same time, Fox wisely decided to push the big screen adaptation of this anime back to next February.

Now, a new batch of stills has been released and they provide a revealing new look at the James Cameron produced, Robert Rodriguez helmed
movie.

As well as fresh looks at the characters played by Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Skrein, and Jackie Earle Haley, the Motorball contestants also strike a pose, and there are lots of great shots of Alita in action as well.

So, to take a look at these images, click on the "View List" button below.

Played by Deadpool star Ed Skrein, Zapan is said to be James Cameron's favourite design in the movie and you can see why; he definitely shares something in common with a certain Terminator!

Jackie Earle Haley is taking on the role of Grewishka, a hulking villain who has "talon-like fingers that can shoot across the room, pierce just about anything and snap back just as fast."

Christoph Waltz's Dyson Ido performs cyber-surgery on Alita here and it's clear an awful lot of money has been spent on VFX by Fox for this movie and that must mean it has a huge budget!

In order to give Alita an anime look, she's being brought to life through a mixture of VFX and practical effects. However, she definitely stands out here as not looking entirely "real."

If there's one thing we can say for sure about Alita: Battle Angel, it's that the movie is going to feature a badass female lead, something which moviegoers are bound to embrace.

Despite being busy shooting those long-delayed Avatar movies, James Cameron is serving as a producer on this movie and was at one point planning to direct. Now, get back to work, James!

Mahershala Ali received a huge amount of praise for his work in Luke Cage and will soon be seen in True Detective but what will we get from him here? It certainly looks like a unique performance.

Well, this is a rather different look for Eiza Gonzalez! The actress is playing a villain in the movie and looks set to be a formidable foe for Alita throughout the course of this anime adventure.

A cool behind the scenes look at how some of the special effects were brought to life, this is the same technology Marvel Studios uses for a number of characters, including The Hulk and Thanos.

This looks awesome and getting to see the Motorball contestants in action is no doubt something fans are extremely excited about. What do you think about these cool new stills from the film?

Is this movie still in development? I honestly thought it was released yet.

James Cameron is having a really slow couple of years. 🤔

I have been waiting for this almost 15 years now.

This very issue of Hero Illustrated is what informed me way back when that Cameron was doing an Alita film, and I have been very patient since then...

I have to smile a bit when I imagine this character's motivations and morality will likely parallel those of a certain WonderWoman James Cameron criticized a while back.

Don't get me wrong, I generally like James Cameron and this movie had me with its first trailer. I'm a sucker for powerful female heroes who are written well.

I'm still on the fence about this one. On the one hand it's produced by James Cameron, and it's a movie that's been trying to make for a couple of decades. On the other hand it's directed by Robert Rodriguez, and is there a more inconsistent director in Hollywood than Robert Rodriguez? I mean yeah, he made Sin City, Spy Kids 1, and Grindhouse, but then he also made Sharkboy & Lava Girl, Spy Kids 4, and Sin City 2. He's super hit-and-miss.
