SHE-ZOW Creator Responds To Backlash

An article on The Hub's new cartoon series which focuses on a gender-swapping superhero caused quite a stir on CBM the other day, but the show's creator feels the right wing backlash is completely misplaced. Find out what he has to say after the jump.

We posted an article on The HUB's new animated series SheZow a couple of days ago which resulted in almost 10 pages of comments. Many supported the idea of a show that might raise awareness of transgerderism in younger kids (although to correct something from our original article, the character only changes cloths and NOT his body, so to say he's transgender isn't actually accurate) but just as many were appalled. The show's creator Obie Scott Wade was shocked at the response, and maintains that the show is simply about trying to put across that femininity does not equal weakness, and he had no political agenda in coming up with the scenario.

"Just based on what they wrote, they're reading a lot into the show that's not there. I didn't set out to make a show about any sort of political agenda, I just wanted to make a comedy. I wanted to make a cartoon that I would have liked as a kid. So I think people are just reading a lot into it.

And one of the biggest misconceptions people have about SheZow is that Guy's body changes when he puts on the ring: it doesn't, he's still a boy, just wearing a different outfit and hair. And the only ones who know that SheZow is a boy are his sister, his best friend Maz, and his supercomputer named Sheila — everybody else thinks SheZow is a girl."

So, let me see if I get this. Instead of a transgender, he's a transvestite? And you want children to watch this? Man, this country is getting more [frick]ed up by the day...

I don't really get the controversy over this, it's not really that big of a deal in my opinion.......

Once again, I point ou the episode of Fairly Oddparents where Timmy Turner wishes to be a girl. There was no backlash. I was child when that episode came out. And my parents watched it with me. And they were hardcore republican christians. This will effect NO ONE. You dont want your kids watching it, be a responsible parent and pay attention to them. dont let them watch it.

OH NO IF WE LET OUR CHILDREN WATCH A SHOW ABOUT A GUY WHO DRESSES UP AS A GIRL< THEY ARE GONNA WANNA DRESS AS OPPOSITE GENDERS!!!! Just like letting your child watch Superhero movies is gonna make them want to beat people up. Or letting them play violent videogames is gonna make them want to kill people. Yup. Makes sense.

I've been watching horror movies since I was 10, and I have never killed anyone. Hell, I feel bad if I accidentally kill an animal while I'm driving.

LMFAO this piece of shit won't last a season and even if it does...what the [frick] are the target audience?kids in general? boys? girls? this is SO not a show a boy over 6 would watch...so I guess it's for...girls maybe?

Any way, don't give a flying [frick] if the show is about drag queens and shit like that, the concept is still pretty retarded.

The backlash is pretty funny. How many times did Bugs Bunny dress up as a girl and make out with Elmer Fudd?

This is just a fun cartoon, I don't get the fuss.

"OH NO THE KIDS WON'T KNOW WHAT SEX THEY ARE!" Pretty sure kids are smarter than this.

If nothing else maybe people that disagree or think there's some ulterior motive tot he show will actually start policing what their kids watch on TV instead of letting their TV's raise their kids. Silver lining.

It kinda pisses me off how closed minded people are being about this show. Maybe kids SHOULD be learning about these aspects of our culture.

Hey, remember that episode of The Simpsons where Homer starts wearing dresses? I do. And when I saw it, that was the moment I decided to become an overweight cross-dresser.

Idiots.

Seems like it was made for this type of attention. People react, the creator acts like he doesn't see what the big deal is, then pretentious people pat him on the back for being "brave".

@Quark: It may be YOUR culture, but it's not mine. I don't throw mine your face, kindly keep this crap out of mine and my kids' faces.

@Cody: Were you there? Do you KNOW Jesus was fake? Didn't think so.

@Neo: This is the kind of BS those morons thrive on. They think they are so progressive and forward thinking.

The media blew this up... They took it to a whole other level. The whole point of the power ring turning him into a female super hero is clearly meant to be funny (one of the comedy aspects of the show).
codydriscollsrightarm
codydriscollsrightarm - 5/31/2013, 4:58 AM
I never said Jesus was fake. I said the son of god/walk on water/ressurecting skyman was. I don't believe in the Easter [frick]ing Bunny and I don't believe in the Skyman as well. Specially, that vain, angry, bitter, homophobic skyman.

What exactly is wrong with being 'progressive and forward'? What exactly is wrong about doing a show about people who are different?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with being gay, except in the bigoted little minds of christians and conservatives.

And just to add, anyone hating this who calls themselves a Christian, is NOT a Christian as they clearly do not even understand the teachings of Christ, so stop calling yourself a Christian until you have properly understood the teachings of Christ. I am not a Christian, but I do study the philosophy and teachings of Christ, in fact I study all religions and their esoteric teachings. If anything I am an Alchemist, it is the only label I don't mind wearing. Anyone who feels hate and anger towards something like this is in no way shape or form spiritual or peaceful.

@Alchemist: You either believe or you don't. And no, Christ most certainly did not teach hate. Mankind has perfected that all on its own. I do not speak of hate for myself, more like disapproval of having things like this shoved in my face. I am not judging. Not my job and above my pay grade.

@Cody: Sorry, I can't let this go. How do you KNOW the Son of God is fake? Personally, I don't care what you believe. You don't throw your opinions in my face, I won't throw mine in yours.

I don't see the point in all the uproar.
It just shows how small-minded, shallow and really uncivilised society is when faced with these situations, it's cowardice.

If you don't like a show like this, don't watch. But I think it's a concept that's new, very current and modern so why shouldn't TV change with the times?

There are people who are transgendered, people who dress in women's/men's clothes or who are homosexual, you can't change that and to try is a reflection on yourself as a human being; a devolved human being.

I'm all for She-Zow.
Whether it's for comedy for for political reasons, I don't care, it's a good concept and children should be aware of the outside worl.

Oh God here we go again, the guy pretty clearly states that people were reading way too much into this, now you're all "Oh he's a transvestite now then? Even worse!" Are you even listening to yourselves? It has as much to do with being trans than Ranma does, which is...IT DOESN'T.

@DRMidNite - How do we know Jesus isn't real? Because the entire scientific community, backed up by evidence and logic mind you, disagrees with you. The Bible is a book of fairy-tales, that's a fact, now get over it.
