Ant-Man: My opinion in Marvel's latest movie

In my opinion Marvel's brandnew Ant-Man is just a mediocre MCU movie.

I watched Ant-Man about two hours ago with some friends and although I thought it was a fun movie it just didn’t click in the same way as most of the other MCU movies (except “The Incredible Hulk”).

I can’t even say for sure why it didn’t, maybe it was because it lacked some action in the first half of the movie. Or because some of the jokes didn’t work very well in my opinion (which could also be because of a not quite perfect German translation).

But honestly I think it wasn’t just because of those reasons but of the overall “feeling” of the movie.

For example Scott’s training progress going from about 5% to 95% in under 5 minutes feels quite forced as well as some of his jokes.

To make this clear: None of this means Ant-Man is a bad movie but it just can’t compete with the MCU’s most action packed movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Avengers: Age of Ultron nor can it create the same crazy-funny comic book experience as GotG does.

In my opinion the mid-/post-credit scenes were really the best thing about Ant-Man (apart from his fight against a certain avenger), which is a real shame for me because I don’t think it’s a good sign if teasing future movies outshines everything.

Ant-Man may be a box office hit but in my opinion it just can't compete with my favorite MCU movies such as GotG.

I’m sorry if this article is shorter than most of the other ones on this site but I just wanted to tell you my opinion about Ant-Man.

P.S.: Please forgive me if there are any grammatical errors or spelling issues in here (I’m German).

Are you nucking futs!!! Just got back from seeing this. And I have to say, Ant-Man has to be one of the Marvel heroes I have always found the least interesting. At least Pym. Not as familiar with Lang. But this movie sold me on both characters! Finally a Pym I can like. And Langs story was amazing. Loved it. People keep saying these movies are formulaic. Aren't most super hero movies? From any company? Good guys win, bad guys lose. That's the nature of a CBM. Go somewhere else if you don't like it. Except Watchmen. That was definitely different from the others. But for real, this movie was great. Acting, story, action, easter eggs, all on point. Including an amazing sequence with another super hero that I won't name. And flash backs to a certain PAIR of super heroes I won't name. And let's not forget the visual effects. This movie is on par with Guardians of the Galaxy. Loved every minute.

And I also have to say, to sit in a theater and watch a Star Wars trailer, that I have already watched online a dozen times, and it still gave me goosebumps.....

Let's just say it's an amazing time to be a fan.

I liked that his training didn't take so long because then you'd end up having a VERY slow paced movie

I definitely enjoyed the movie. Even though I don't agree with you, I respect your opinion. Maybe if you give it another watch, youll enjoy it more! Don't listen to @Crabnado Just keep writing articles and try to develop your skills. You'll improve for sure!

Well, of course you didn't like the jokes. You're German.

I haven't seen it yet, but if it's the same as Age of Ultron, Thor 2, The First Avenger, Thor and Iron Man 2, I'll hate it.

So wrong. Just dead wrong.

What a ridiculously ignorant thing to say. "If it's bad, I won't like it."
Not to mention that all 5 of the movies you mentioned are nothing alike besides 2 of them being the Thor solo films.

Saw ant man yesterday and absolutely adored it. Booked a ticket to see it again sunday. Winter soldier and gotg were the only two recent films where I couldn't wait to see it again. Went to see ultron twice but not because I really enjoyed it but because I wanted to see if it was any better second time. Ant man may not make guardians money but its certainly not going to flop on its tiny (in compariaon to other marvel movies) budget. I'm glad that even after difficult circumstances Peyton reed was so into it.

It's tracking for around 60 mil. That is not a flop!

@PietroMaximoff It's not ignorant, rather insightful really. I don't hate any of the films I listed, not really. For the most part, I don't consider them bad films at all. I just know myself and I know that if Ant-Man follows the "Marvel Formula" built by Iron Man 2, then I know I won't like it. The same way I was bored by Age of Ultron, the same way I really didn't care for either Thors, Cap1, or the latter Ironmen. If it changes things up a bit, like Winter Soldier and Gaurdians, then I'll have a gay old time, but if this is standard Marvel, I really couldn't care less.

It's a statement about myself more than anything. I never said "it will be bad," I said "I'll hate it." Which I can aptly say because I know myself and I know what I'm looking for in these movies.

@gamecreatorjj. Putting it that way, does make a little more sense. Thanks for at least explaining your opinion. And you did it respectfully. Cool dat.

Not every film can be a huge box office money maker, Ant Man is already a success just for being a great film in its own right but it will easily make enough money anyway. Marvel took a risk on a smaller more personal film and it's paid off
homodrome
homodrome - 7/19/2015, 3:40 PM
Well Ant-Man already has made back more than it's production budget and will likely recoup marketing by the end of the week. So nope, not a flop. They made this movie for LESS than any of their other films.

Your personal opinion on the quality of a movie has literally no impact on whether a film succeeds financially or commercially. It has a cinemascore of A, certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and came in 1# at the box office (while Jurassic World, Inside Out and Minions all still making big money). Not to mention Trainwreck and that flop Terminator Gensysis.

A movie is a flop if no one goes to see it, or if the critics completely pan it. Not because a bunch of dudes on the internet feel it fails to live up to a comic book character WHO TALKS TO ANTS.

Y'all need to pull your heads out of your asses, and realize when something belongs in a comment, rather than a full fledged article which has been proven wrong within 2 days of being posted.

All that said, you are totally entitled to think it's not a good movie.

It's just that not liking something personally has no effect on how successful something is.

Haha love the fact the author is eating crow over his origianl headline "ant man marvels first flop" so he edits it to try and make it relevant.

@sickboy76 I haven't changed the headline (and some parts of the article) to make it more relevant but I've changed it because I read your comments and get your point (except @TheManFromMars). I over reacted a bit and also thought my opinion would be a more important than it is. I also want to thank you for your critic (although I think some of it could have been said in a nicer way ;)

@Nibor99

That was just a joke about the South Park episode in which German scientists created the "FunnyBot" in response to Germany being elected the country with the least sense of humor. That gif is from that episode.

I'm sorry that you didn't get the reference. I just saw the opportunity for doing a silly joke and took it. Didn't mean to insult or offend in any way.

@TheManFromMars

If it was only a joke I'm sorry for thinking you wanted to insult me.

By the way your kind of right because many jokes that are great in English just aren't funny in German which is also the fault of some unskilled translators to some degree.

This is one of the reason why I watch as many movies and TV shows in English as possible

For me it was the beat of the screen play. Film school kind of ruined things like that for me. Being a huge geek, I hate it when my own suspension of disbelief is thrown off. It was like they were rushing the bsckstory for everyone. I sort of understand why, but still, the best was rushing things along. Still liked it though. Don't say it often, but I feel like I should've watched it in 3D. Ha
