YOUNG AVENGERS: Kathryn Newton Talks THE MARVELS' Big Tease And What She Knows About Her MCU Future

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania star Kathryn Newton has talked about that Young Avengers tease in The Marvels and reveals what she knows about her MCU future as a possible member of the superhero team.

The last time Earth's Mightiest Heroes assembled was in Avengers: Endgame. Five years later, it's beginning to feel like Marvel Studios might have made a mistake by not bringing together a new version of the team sooner than 2026's Avengers: The Kang Dynasty

There have been more than a few Young Avengers teases, of course, with the biggest coming at the end of The Marvels when Ms. Marvel recruited Kate Bishop/Hawkeye to the group she's putting together.

The moment to call these heroes the "Young Avengers" has probably passed given that most are in their early-to-mid twenties, but we're anticipating them ultimately coming together as at least of team of "New Avengers."

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania star Kathryn Newton, who plays the MCU's Stature, was asked if she was given a heads up about Kamala Khan's comments that she was putting out a "feeler" to Ant-Man's daughter.

"I did! I heard through the Quantum Realm birdies," the actress said. "I heard that there was a cool tag, and I was pretty excited to see that and hear that."

As for whether she's always known her character could eventually join the Young Avengers, Newton added, "In the Marvel universe, you hope for that. You hope to be. My whole thing is that I grew up watching Iron Man, and I feel like I grew with that character. So my hope for Cassie Lang has always been to grow with my audience, be it the people who are my age and saw [Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania], or the people who are just starting to watch Marvel movies at a young age."

"I saw one when I was a little young, but I still love those movies. So if I get an opportunity to continue the story, then that would be so cool to be a part of a generation that’s growing up with a film."

"It’s such a big part of my life. But they don’t really tell you. They tell you an overall, but I don’t take anything for granted," she continued. "I am just trying to get through the day. Let’s finish one movie and then let’s continue. But I would very much also jump at the opportunity to work with Marvel Studios again."

Newton received mixed reviews for her work as Cassie in the Ant-Man threequel but, in fairness, she wasn't exactly working with the best material. The hero definitely has potential in the MCU and should be part of this Avengers team when this next generation of heroes finally assembles.

Who would be your dream roster for the Young Avengers?

Never has the excitement for an Avengers movie been so low. It was a massive mistake sidelining the team-up events for… well, whatever tf it is they think they’ve been doing.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2024, 7:21 AM
@FireandBlood - They shoulda kept that momentum going with an Avengers movie at the end of Phase 4, even if they had to make Phase 4 bigger.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/2/2024, 11:29 AM
@ObserverIO - Didn't NEED to be bigger, just needed Quantumania as it was ditched for it being Avengers not the Antfamily (even if it included a couple of members of it). Ultimately however whatever they had gone with would have been impacted heavily during development and pre-production by COVID as all the films we have had were so maybe a blessing not a curse long term that we have had to wait longer for an Avengers film etc.

Which makes me a tad curious, all those wanting the original Avengers roster, does that mean they want MORE Antfamily and Chris Hemsworth Thor stuff and the risk a new actor won't land as well and carry a film like Iron Man 2? I am not against an original team again at some point but expect that to be several years after the MCU as is stops existing not connected in any way to it (not even a post Secret Wars soft-reboot thing).
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2024, 11:52 AM
@Apophis71 - The original version would have had a much greater impact. But instead of killing Ant-Man, they essentially killed Kang's chances of ever being seen as a genuine threat to the MCU.
JDL
JDL - 2/2/2024, 2:29 PM
@ObserverIO - I seriously disagree.

1) The movie business has not recovered from Covid and appears to have changed as far as what movies the public will be willing to go see in an actual theater.

2) RDJ and Chris Evans have not been successfilly replaced. I think Carol Danvers was supposed to fill one of those slots but sadly, that ship has sailed and sunk.

Any Avengers release until those things are fixed is a wasted oppurtunity.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/2/2024, 2:50 PM
@JDL - If one flop and/or poorly recieved film was enough on it's own to derail inclusion as an Avenger we wouldn't have had the first one due to TIH loosing money and Iron Man 2 being considered flat out bad and likewise AoU after Thor Dark World.

A BIGGER issue maybe more that support of Thor, Antman and Hulk isn't there currently either than specificaly just regarding Danvers who can still work well enough as an Avenger provided the story/script is good. Moving forward reception of Cap4 for Sam and Thunderbolts for Yelena and Bucky will be a better guide to where things stand.
JDL
JDL - 2/3/2024, 2:39 AM
@Apophis71 - OK we are not going to agree about some things concerning TIH, IM2, & CA:TFA and I don't want to argue about it. But they did introduce & set up those characters pretty well. The Avengers brought the mix to a boil and voila, we had a winner. Imo the key dynamic was Stark and Rogers. They cared about the same things and argued about how to protect them. This continues all the way through Endgame. Then that chapter ends.

As I see it Danvers is too outer space and Strange too multiversal to carry that load and you get no Avengers film without it. So any Avengers film in Phases 4 & 5 as they currently exist would not have worked well. Imo they were waiting on T'Challa and Reed Richards, especially the latter. The death of Chadwick Boseman screwed up the works and to date there is no sign of a repair.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/3/2024, 4:39 AM
@JDL - Oh the dynamic worked brilliantly between the two and I actualy enjoyed TIH and Iron Man 2 but doesnt negate Hulk's film didn't turn a profit and even tho I enjoyed it IM2 was a bad film carried on the shoulders of RDJ's take on Tony.

BIG reason why I think reboot and recast for Tony and Steve may not work is cos have doubt the new actors could do it as well as those two did in those specific roles for the Avenger movies. I'd rather try out different dynamics with different actors with different characters than have the expectations and direct comparisons to make if the same characters recast.

Until we see how the new team bounce off each other impossible to conclusively say one way or another if the dynamics will be as good or not regardless opinion of individual characters and/or their films end of the day.

JDL - 2/3/2024, 4:28 PM
@Apophis71 - RE: TIH Profitability. One thing to remember is that TV ads for the film were almost all done on NBC, a sister company. The realistic BEP is lower than you might think.

I agree 100% on the reboot and recasting of Stark & Rogers. It won't work now and may never work. It's too soon in any case.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/3/2024, 4:46 PM
@JDL - Not saying TIH made a HUGE loss however only made 1.9 times reported production budget before considering any advertising cost so in terms of at the time didn't turn a profit, long term due to residuals from being connected to the MCU probably has made a bunch. For the record think it should have earned WAY more on release but suffered a backlash from the prior Hulk film I feel without any added value at the time of folk buying into an Avengers film buildup.
JDL
JDL - 2/3/2024, 5:53 PM
@Apophis71 - I suspect the Bill Bixby TV show was more of a problem than the 2003 movie. It was a third attempt and people may have been a little burned out.

She is a good actress but I did not care for her in this role. Not sure whether it was her performance or the material she had to work with.

However, recasting Cassie was unnecessary.

Let's see Marvel do right to their a-characters for the next few years.

I really don't want to see any silly mcu movies anymore for the next decade, Deadpool is not silly, it's funny.

Ms. Marvel was just too over the top for me and i doubt it is a good idea to do a Young Avengers movie with how The Marvels , Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel performed.

IF Disney is really considering to do a YA movie, it will be the first mcu movie i won't watch, at least if the team consists only of the four female characters introduced so far (Stature, Hawkeye, America Chavez and Ms. Marvel) together with Skaar (Hulks son) in place of Hulkling and maybe Speed and Wikkan (the two sons of Scarlet Witch).

I don't see Iron Lad (a young Kang) and Patriot (the nephew of Isaiah Bradley, the original black Supersoldier) being included in the movie, as the Kang character is burned and the reception of Captain America 4 probably won't be great and Patriot is even less well known.
DevilsDreams
DevilsDreams - 2/2/2024, 7:02 AM
@MarvelZombie616 - I feel like you need a good Avengers team/movie in place to cement the new main team before they build up the Young Avengers... Kind of like the Teen Titans set up, I mean in theory, you could even get the YAs to go up against the Avengers themselves, even if it's just one or two of them.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/2/2024, 7:36 AM
@DevilsDreams - Probably still will do the main team first as the likely list have had and/or getting their titular films (and all been in multiple films and/or shows) whereas the Younger team members have mostly just been on D+ shows and the odd supporting film role. Fair chance Patriot could cameo on Cap4 after his small role in FatWS and the main Wiccan hasn't even appeared yet so a way off the bunch assembling whilst we are ready for the older ones to do so straight after Cap4 and Thunderbolts. I mean in terms of a titular film Young Avengers is likely still at least 3yrs away minimum so other than showing up as a tertiary one scene team in Secret Wars or such like...

NoAssemblyReqd
NoAssemblyReqd - 2/2/2024, 6:29 AM
One thing I guessed, and that was confirmed in the unofficial MCU history book, is that Kevin Feige never lets the failure of one movie get in the way of continuing to use the actors and characters from that movie.

So I have no doubt we’ll get better stories and movies with most of the characters that have been introduced during this so-called slump.
Spike101
Spike101 - 2/2/2024, 7:13 AM
Zero interest in this garbage, to put this out at a time the MCU is struggling would be like throwing a lead weight to a drowning man.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2024, 7:37 AM
Seriously, they're not that young.

Iman Vellani (Ms Marvel) - 21
Kathryn Newton (Stature) - 26
Haliee Steinfeld (Hawkeye) - 27
Elijah Richardson (Patriot) - 21
Wil Deusner (Skaar) - 21
Paul Bettany (Vision) - 52

Skaar will probably replace Hulkling, Wiccan and Speed will probably be aged up a bit and Iron Lad hasn't been introduced yet.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2024, 7:50 AM
Avengers in their 20s?! Unheard of!

Oh except for Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland and probably many more if we count the mega-Avengers at the end of Endgame.

And the Young Avengers hasn't even started filming yet.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/2/2024, 9:56 AM
@ObserverIO - Think the Youngest, currently, who could turn up and played a character that has been on the Young Avengers team in the comics is Jack Veal (Kid Loki) - 16. Beyond that there is also Xochitl Gomez (America Chavez ) - 17 however have doubts either will be on the team initialy when they turn up.

I also doubt there will be a Young Avengers film before Secret Wars anyway as your talking at least a couple years development before even getting to pre-production stage, more likely to see the early stages of it in something like a season two of Ms. Marvel and/or Hawkeye shows before we get official word on their own show or film.

When you consider when all the phase four and five films started filming to release date alone we are talking at minimum I'd say three years before a Young Avengers team would likely get a film released (IF they ever do) and we'll likely have had the main Avengers having had one and a multiverse Avengers led film before then with the two announced Avengers films. The next saga will likely revolve more around Xmen and F4 anyway so having a Young Avengers franchise as the sideline movies like GotG and Antman were (until connecting fully in Infinity War and Endgame) and not the main focus ones of mutants, first family and remaining older Avengers it shouldn't be a huge issue as by then they will be in their 30's or older, lol.

@ObserverIO - I assumed IronLad will be replaced by IronHeart.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2024, 10:11 AM
@Apophis71 - I'd hope for a rebooted Avengers post-Secret Wars rather than a legacy team, tbh.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 2/2/2024, 10:11 AM
@AvalonX - Probably, which means that she could be retconned to being the a younger version of the new Kang or she could even be the new Kang. That might be an interesting angle.

But again, Ironheart actress Dominique Thorne is 26 already, the same age Chris Hemsworth was when he started playing Thor and just a little older than ScarJo was when she first started playing Black Widow.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/2/2024, 10:21 AM
@AvalonX - That is possible but she is 26 so still wouldn't be a team of teens some seem to think it would be (already in MIT) and still of the available younger potential members more males than female to choose from once Wiccan and Speed get reintroduced (can also bring in the Red Dagger from Ms Marvel as well as Toussaint and Axl from WF and L&T for instance). Still entirely possible a Kid Kang Iron Lad could appear still however such as in Armor Wars even if Ironheart ends up being connected to the team IF/when they assemble.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/2/2024, 10:25 AM
@ObserverIO - I prefer post Secret Wars it is mostly about Xmen anyway so reboot or legacy as a side thing is kinda moot to me personally as don't see a new younger Steve Rogers or Tony Stark to auto be more optimal than having already established legacies anyway.

I wonder if they’ll actually develop Elijah Bradley or if they’ll glance over him. Seems like Marvel is trying really hard to develop all the female characters more than the males. I miss the old MCU.

Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/2/2024, 11:40 AM
@slickrickdesigns - Already been rumours about the Bradley's being in Cap4, think Isaiah is confirmed but could be wrong, so probably but also had a young male BP and Axl (Heimdall's Son) in films too, had the twins in one film (as well as WandaVision) and at least Wiccan getting another intro in Agatha's show so not like they haven't pushed male members at all. Don't forget we also had Kid Loki and although initial appearance BAD likely plans to fix and use Skaar too.
slickrickdesigns
slickrickdesigns - 2/2/2024, 11:53 AM
@Apophis71 - cameos, all cameos. Wanda’s boys probably got the most screen time and slightly showed some kind of back story.
Kamala, Cassy, Riri and Kate have all had some kind of real back story and hero origin already established by now. All the males besides the twins have literally had one line of dialogue if any in a cameo and that’s it.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 2/2/2024, 12:07 PM
@slickrickdesigns - Not saying those four didn't but the Twins were the first and planted the seeds at least of a lot. I'd say we had just as much with Axl as we did with Riri (who may not be on a Young Avengers team anyway) in setting the groundwork but Cassy has been around since phase two so...

...way too soon to say definitively on anything however as could have Patriot fully established in Cap4 and an Iron Lad in armor wars for all we know currently but the most established soon will probably be Wiccan by time Agatha's show is done and dusted (which could also intro Hulkling).
