Potential ANT-MAN & THE WASP Director Peyton Reed Says Female Heroes A No-Brainer

Peyton Reed is anxious to put his stamp on an Ant-Man movie from start to finish. If negotiations work out for Edgar Wright's replacement, the director stated that it's important for him to define the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) in the sequel to the $500+ million dollar box office earner.

Peyton Reed is out promoting the home video release of Ant-Man but interviews are also touching on what Peyton has planned for the sequel, whcih was recently revealed to be titled Ant-Man & The Wasp.  Of course, Peyton must first finalize his contract to return if he's to put his plans for The Wasp in motion.  Said Reed, "We’re still in the middle of negotiation, but it’s looking pretty great.  I’m dying to come back and do the movie. I’m very excited about it."

In terms of what Reed brought to the first film, the director indicated that it was his decision to place a greater emphasis on both Hope Van Dyne and Janet Van Dyne.  "That was one of the things that was important to me in the first movie when I came on was emphasizing the Wasp more, both Hope Van Dyne and Janet Van Dyne...It’s such a no-brainer that there needs to be female heroes.  It’s about keeping the stories interesting and having fresh stories to tell. I always like that about Ant-Man and Wasp because it dealt with gender politics as well as superhero stuff. In the comics, particularly in the ’60s comics, the Janet Van Dyne Wasp was clearly written by all men and was pretty one-dimensional. She’s gotten much more dimensionalized since then. That’s one of those things that I think is going to be really exciting and fresh about this movie. You do feel a certain amount of responsibility. At the end of the day it’s organic to that character and the movie.”

Ant-Man & The Wasp
is scheduled to hit North American theaters on
July 6, 2018.  Currently Reed and write Adam McKay are in negotiations to return.  Ant-Man will next be seen in Captain America: Civil War. Hope's Wasp was originally scheduled to make her debut in Civil War but the Marvel brass ultimately decided the large number of characters in the film would be a disservice to the character's debut.

Evangline Lily sucks the life out of every scene she's in, whether its LOST, The Hobbit and Ant-man. They should recast, with an actress who has more charisma. Should of had her and Cobie Smulders swap their roles imo.

If you want more women to be in comics and comic book movies it's time to stop writing them as if their only place is to be the girl friend of the hero.

Marvel girl-power is coming very soon...to Fox. Marvel Studios is doing a great job with what they have but Marvel Comic's best female characters are mostly mutants: Storm, Rogue, Psylocke, Shadowcat, Phoenix, etc...

[frick] off, Jollem. We all know you're acting like a bitch because your precious Not So Amazing Spider-Man franchise was a failure. How does it feel?

Ant-Man was a great movie but I agree with @FishyZombie , Lily was pretty dull in the film. I think they should really help lure more out of her in the sequel. Rudd was more energetic and engaging than her, maybe it was because she was still having issues with Pym about her mother and etc. but I just couldn't feel anything coming from her. Hoping for the best though as always.

Rumor is WB will do a female-team movie before Captain Marvel even comes out. Marvel gotta hit back with the A-Force, though most of those characters are
mutants.

They say it's a no brainer now, but of course this is going to be all over the marketing:

"Hey guys, we've got a female super-hero!!"

This is not a Marvel problem. It's a problem with Hollywood in general.

Very exciting. I liked the first and the second looks to be even better. It looks like they're going to go save Janet.

One of the unappreciated aspects of making Hank Pym older is that it completely sidesteps the uncomfortable (not altogether fair) wifebeater conversation. A year ago, if you had said to me: "Describe Hank and Janet Pym", I would have had to begin with something like "it's complicated...".

But now, the MCU Hank and Janet isn't complicated. All we know, and all we need to know, is this:

The MCU did what comicbook writers have flirted with and failed to do over and over again. They redeemed Hank Pym. As a fan of the character, I couldn't be happier with that.
