AQUAMAN: 5 Convincing Signs It Will Be The Best DC Comics Movie To Date
Move over Wonder Woman and Justice League because of all the upcoming DC Comics adaptations on the way, it's actually Aquaman which stands the greatest chance of being the best yet!
2016 was not a particularly a good year for Warner Bros. While neither Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice nor Suicide Squad were box office flops, the former underperformed and both felt the wrath of critics. Right now, the signs point to Wonder Woman being very well-received, though, and Justice League is looking good despite a recent tragedy which has led to some big behind the scenes changes.
Looking ahead to 2018 and the only DC Comics adaptation currently on the way is Aquaman. Gotham City Sirens or something else could be squeezed in, but it seems like that will be it for next year.
That's far from a bad thing, though. With a December release date and no competition from Star Wars, Aquaman is poised to dominate the box office and all the signs are pointing to it being something truly special. Here, you will find a look at the five reasons why we think Aquaman stands a chance of being the best DC Comics movie to date. Heck, it may very well even beat Marvel...
5. It's Sticking Closely To The Comic Books
It's not always necessary for a superhero movie to adhere to the source material and is in fact sometimes impossible. The fact is that changes must be made when these characters make the transition from the page to big screen, but it's always nice to see an adaptation sticking closely to its roots. Based on everything we've seen so far, Aquaman is doing just that.
From Mera's screen accurate costume to set photos which reveal major ties to Geoff Johns' critically acclaimed and groundbreaking run at the start of The New 52, Aquaman appears to be taking everything fro the comic books that worked and using it the right way. Throw in the clear enthusiasm from the cast and the addition of characters like The Trench and Ocean Master who fans desperately want to see in live-action and all the ingredients for this movie to be amazing are there.
4. Geoff Johns' Involvement
Talking of Geoff Johns, his fingerprints being all over Aquaman is no bad thing. While he had minimal involvement in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad by the sound of it, the comic book writer's newfound position at Warner Bros. as one of the heads of the DC Films division appears to have done wonders for Wonder Woman based on those early reactions and seems to have had an impact on Aquaman too.
Arthur Curry has always been an interesting character, but what Johns did with him back in 2011 was a game changer which established the King of Atlantis as one of the DC Universe's greatest heroes and a vital member of the Justice League with a fascinating supporting cast and backstory. Based on everything we've seen so far, Johns has helped make sure that's going to be the case on the big screen too.
3. The Cast Is Incredible
When Warner Bros. announced their lineup of DC Comics adaptations, I'd be lying to say that Aquaman excited me in the least. Jason Momoa is a fine actor, but I didn't really have much of a reason to be excited about seeing the Game of Thrones alum as the King of Atlantis. The Justice League trailer changed that by making it apparent that he'll be stealing the show and I'm now incredibly excited to see him shine in this solo adventure.
Let's not forget the rest of the cast, though. Amber Heard is looking good as Mera so far, while Patrick Wilson taking on the role of Orm/Ocean Master may very well be one of the best casting additions made to the DC Films Universe since Margot Robbie was picked to play Harley Quinn. Throw in the talented Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta and Nicole Kidman as Arthur's mother and it's obvious how great this cast is.
2. James Wan Is Directing
Horror movies are incredibly hit and miss and it's fair to say that most fall squarely into the "generic" category. The Insidious movies were better than most, though, while The Conjuring and its sequel are arguably a couple of the best and scariest entries into the genre for a very long time. Even so, it was still a surprise when director James Wan was tasked with helming the seventh instalment of the big budget action Fast and Furious series.
However, he excelled there, delivering arguably one of the best movies in that franchise to date and finding a way to pay tribute to the late Paul Walker in a suitable manner. As a result, I have full confidence in his abilities to deliver an Aquaman movie which does justice to the hero and makes it quite possibly the best DC Comics adaptation to date. Everything he says sounds right and what we've seen from this release points to him doing a great job with the hero.
1. Aquaman Is Cool Now, Apparently
Who would have thought it? Well, Aquaman has always been something of a badass, but pop culture has turned him into a joke. Geoff Johns may have helped change that in the comic books, but it seems we have Zack Snyder for fully altering that perception in Justice League. Following the release of that movie's second trailer, all everyone was talking about was how cool Arthur Curry looked and it seems like the character's transformation from awful to awesome will be completed there.
The fact is, though, is that there's a lot to love about Aquaman and a lot of ways his movie has a chance to stand out as being something really special. It taking us beneath the sea is one of the reasons it will be unlike any other superhero movie and assuming Wan delivers actions scenes as good as the ones we got in Furious 7, I remain confident that this movie is gonna rock. I dig it.
