Aquaman has been the breath of fresh air Warner Bros. and the DCEU have needed. With the $1 billion landmark already in the bag, audiences are clamoring for the immersive experience Arthur and the gang have to offer. Thanks to the studio's reliance on creators as opposed to the shared universe formula, it seems as though DC will bode well long term.
On Saturday, James Wan's Aquaman overcame a phenomenal box office landmark. With an estimated $10 million for the weekend, and a very strong -40% decline, the superhero epic swam past $300 million, becoming the sixth film of 2018 to do so. The film is among the 50 fastest films to reach the landmark, and for a film that opened to a mere $68 million, this is a very impressive result.
It is worth noting that this is the fourth DCEU film to reach $300 million. Man of Steel and Justice League failed to reach the mark. When all is said and done it is expected to surpass the ~$330 million totals of Batman v. Superman and Suicide Squad, though Wonder Woman's $412 million total should be considered unreachable at this point. Then again, Aquaman has surprised us before, destroying the $200 million total projections that were pegged in November.
In addition, with a opening weekend multiplier of over 4x, Aquaman has clearly been running on word of mouth and rewatchability. With stunning visuals and fun charismatic characters, It's safe to say Curry will be one of the most prominent faces in the DCEU going forward.
