AVATAR Director James Cameron Thought AQUAMAN Was "Great Fun" But Nowhere Near Realistic Enough

James Cameron's Avatar sequels will take us underwater and the filmmaker is utilising revolutionary technology to make that a reality. Unfortunately, he simply didn't buy into the physics of Aquaman...

James Cameron has spent the past few years off the radar working on his long-delayed Avatar sequels, occasionally popping up to endorse Terminator: Genisys or tear into superhero movies.

As it turns out, though, the filmmaker actually enjoyed Aquaman! The DC Comics adaptation beat his Avatar sequels to the punch by heading underwater thanks to VFX rather than practical effects. "I think it's great fun," he said before adding that he couldn't have taken the helm of a movie like that because it simply wasn't realistic enough for his liking.

"I never could have made that film, because it requires this kind of total dreamlike disconnection from any sense of physics or reality," Cameron said. "People just kind of zoom around underwater, because they propel themselves mentally, I guess, I don’t know. But it’s cool! You buy it on its own terms."

"I’ve spent thousands of hours underwater," the director and prolific deep-sea diver continued. "While I can enjoy that film, I don’t resonate with it because it doesn’t look real."

Aquaman's underwater scenes were shot on a soundstage with the water added during post-production. The Avatar sequels, on the other hand, have reportedly used motion capture technology and were actually shot underwater with brand new techniques.

Time travel, androids that look and act human, and people sending their minds into a massive blue alien avatar confirmed real guys. James Cameron can only make things that look real. -.-

@dracula - I don't even mind that they don't like them, it's fine, but let's not pretend it's because it's not realistic Mr Cameron, that is hypocritical! But yeah, comic book movies still seem to be looked down upon, which is bizarre.

While I'm not parricularly bothered about Avatar, I am interested to see what new tech/innovations Cameron has been developing. Could be 3xciting in that sense.

@dracula - Yeah I totally agree with you there. I prefer Dances With Wolves. Was all about the visuals for me but that's about it.

@dracula - Oh man. I'm gonna say something you'll probably take a blasphomy. I've only seen Korra (which I really enjoyed). I need to seek out Avatar. Especially as I love Anime.
