First Article. Age of Ultron/Vision Theory

After the news that Paul Bettany will be Vision in the upcoming Age Of Ultron film I have formed a theory on how he may come to existence in the MCU.

Editorial Opinion

I have been an avid reader/follower of this site for many years but this will be my first contribution. Please forgive any inaccuracy's or if anything is not clear. I am not the best writer, so please feel free to provide me some constructive criticisms, and I shall do my best to make corrections.

As far as I'm aware I haven't come across a theory like this on CBM.COM before so I apologize if any one has already written something similar, but I had this idea today and thought it worth sharing. Without further ado, I shall begin.

It's no secret that Ultron will take on the Avengers in their next outing, we also are now aware that Vision will also factor into this somehow... but, "who creates who?" is the biggest question on all of our minds.

We all know that in the comics Hank Pym is the creator of Ultron, and Ultron the creator of Vision but this is not how it will play out in the MCU. At first I was annoyed by this; the majority of changes from page to screen I have happily accepted but I was put off by this idea. One of the things I love most about the marvel comic universe is the years upon years of character lineage and how through the ages one character can create/affect another and so on. However reflecting on my views of Iron Man 3 (which I greatly enjoyed) I realized that its all about deliverance, yes I was anticipating a big villain showdown between Tony and Kingsley's "Mandarin" but upon the reveal of Trevor Slattery I was completely won over. I realized for me that despite what I know and love about each character, the wonderful thing about the MCU is that they can change and have a different outlook for film. Now it may not always work as well as the Trevor reveal did for me, though I would be lying if I said I was a fan of every writer and artist that has ever worked for Marvel comics. However I digress, back to Vision.

Bare in mind this is all under the presumption that Tony Stark has a major role to play; I think the SDCC14 teaser pretty much confirmed this. So upon reading the wonderful news that Paul Bettany will be taking up the role of Vision my first thoughts were that Ultron would create Vision to combat the Avengers, eventually turning against Ultron aiding in his defeat. Yet I was failing to include the fact that Paul Bettany is the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S, I feel this would not make sense considering James Spader will be Ultron. The fact that Bettany is both J.A.R.V.I.S and Vision (I believe) shows a clear connection between the two and also Ultron. Why create Ultron with James Spader, then have Vision formed on seemingly lesser technology of J.A.R.V.I.S? But then after re-watching Captain America: The First Avenger, all the dots started to connect.

As much as I and all of the CBM fans love to read and know the stories like the back of our hand, occasionally things fall through the cracks and we forget. I was working under the idea that Ultron just creates Vision, but there was a previous incarnation before Vision; Jim Hammond the original human torch, an android created in 1939 by Professor Phineas T. Horton. This android form was used as the body for what became Vision. Now we have already seen this creation in the MCU, which I'm sure pretty much all of us are aware of. A very quick panning shot of the 1943 Stark Expo showed us a glimpse of 'The synthetic man' and above stating its the creation of Professor Phineas T. Horton.

So we start Avengers 2 with Tony happily living with Pepper, sticking to his promise not to build any more suits. He may not admit it but he misses being Iron Man. They're living back in New York in the newly named Avengers tower (not that any of them have visited but he likes the name) he's made living quarters and training rooms heck, even a hulk sized shower. Unable to 'tinker' on his suits, he goes in search of other diversions and discovers a whole load of disused and discarded Stark Expo experiments and presentations (there could be a little reference to Howards Starks flying car and how it mysteriously went missing, as we know it ended up as Coulson's 'Lola' in AOS.) Searching through the mess and clutter he comes across this large dust covered test tube with who else but Prof. Horton's synthetic man. We then move on to some form of conversation that Tony has with J.A.R.V.I.S and a light is turned on for Tony, 1+1= Vision! His best (non human) friend who can know what he's thinking before he says it and has been his backbone through out the majority of him being Iron Man. If Tony can't be the hero why not create J.A.R.V.I.S to be.

This of course is a very loose idea and if this does end being the case I'm certain Joss Whedon will have crafted a much better story than stumbling upon a dusty man sized test tube. This, as I say is all quick messy thinking on my part but definitely think it is a valid way for Vision to come into creation.

Now Ultron's creation is an idea I haven't really got down yet; however, I feel that if things were to go the way I've predicted it may lead into Visions creation. A lot of what happens in Winter Soldier and what could possibly come to light regarding S.H.I.E.L.D and HYDRA would also come into play. Maybe he's created as a result of Tony wanting to tinker and upgrade Vision. Or maybe I'm completely wrong and we find out Hank Pym made Ultron all those years ago with Howard and slowly he's been evolving himself. Regardless though, Whedon has been quoted saying that in some form or another Ultron will be a result of all the avengers.

At the end of the day I would love to be completely wrong and like Iron Man 3 leave the theatre surprised and overjoyed while straight away in line to buy my second ticket of the day.

Please leave thought and comments below would greatly appreciate the feedback.

Nice write up! I'm as you brought up the Human Torch from the Stark Expo, it can definitely come into play during AoU. We already saw Tony/JARVIS controlling the newest iron man suit externally.. So maybe Tony creates a full android that JARVIS becomes. Maybe Tony doesn't create a ULTRON but SHIELD does using Stark's technology. I can't wait to get more information about the sequel. Definitely most anticipated movie since the original one came out!

Great idea! it also makes sense since they said that his face will be pale. maybe like in the first iron man he will be fixing up the suit and say it needs a little more pizazz in it and add the cape. "Sir, what am i?" "You're a avenger. but you're more than that, you're my vision of the future"

Thanks for all the comments guys. I feel I must just also add that all the pictures where found on Google. So credit for the awesome Paul Bettany manip should go to what ever clever soul created it. I had this theory for the future of shield after winter soldier too, but the second I realised they would at least try for a second AoS season I scrapped it

I absolutely think that the Human Tourch will serve as visions body. And I also think this story will catch us all by surprise. Joss has full control of this story and the direction that got it here and ware it goes next.

Great article 14th! Perhaps, Tony creates the Vision and just assigns it the same voice program he uses for Jarvis. Far fetched I know, as I am sure the intention is to have a connection between Vision and Jarvis.

Good Article, but i personally think that J.A.R.V.I.S. develops a sort of split personality with one being Ultron and the other being Vision. They are both bad at first but the Vision personality owns a part of Tony's humanity as a side effect of being with him from Day 1. I think that in the middle battle the Avengers are fighting w/ The Vision and he has a turn of heart when Tony comes flying in. The they all team up against Ultron and happy good ending until its revealed that Ultron has back ups known as you guessed it, Ulton-2, Ultron-3...

but overall i feel like the Human torch thing will play into it. Maybe a framework for the new bodies

I never really cared for Wonder Man's involvement with Vision's creation IMO it wasn't that important besides the drama between himself, Wanda and Vision. I'm all for JARVIS taking his place. That's the only thing that should be changed... I hope Stark has no involvement with Vision's overall creation. Although I'd never thought I'd say this; the story really would be too connected to RDJ. Leave the complicated shit to Ultron.

The other thing I don't want is Vision's face looking like a humanoid Iron Man helmet (as the report said). THAT'S crossing the line (for me).

See, this is a good way to open your first editorial. By being humble. Good job :)

Good article too. While I like the idea of The Original Human Torch's body being used to create Ultron, I don't think they made a big enough deal about it when they showed that fleeting glimpse of it in Cap:TFA. In all the Marvel films, they have yet to even mention a single word about it. With everything that is going on in A2 (Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, rumored Hydra involvement, Ultron, and of course all the character development of the existing Avengers...) I just can't see them going into much detail explaining the Original Human Torch.

People like us already know his story, but the general audience don't, and it would need to be explained.

I'm not so sure SHIELD is going to be around in any capacity to be creating anything after the Winter Soldier.

I don't think SHIELD will be completely destroyed and cease to exist, but I don't honestly think they will be the huge organization they are right now. Winter Soldier looks like it is going to put the hurt on SHIELD.

There have even been interviews about how the show is going to deal with the new status quo and the aftermath of Winter Soldier.

SO yeah, I think its more likely that Stark creates Ultron. I can live with Pym not creating Ultron, but part of Ultron's dynamic, and what makes him such a meaningful villain is that an Avenger created him. Take that away, and he's just a robot with a brain. But when you factor in the fact that a hero created one of the world's worst villains, it gives all new depth to him.

So yeah, i'm still going with Stark creating Ultron.

@dethpillow thanks im putting a ,ink to the earl animatic that was a part of The Avengers. The 3rd video shows the emergence of a split personality in JARVIS.
