EDITORIAL: Does An Original Team Member Have To Die In AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR?

Avengers: Infinity War promises lots of death, but which characters have to die to really make an impact on audiences? Odds are we're going to see the last of some characters we've known for a long time...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been careful not to permanently kill off many heroes in the first ten years of its run. We've seen fake-outs, resurrections and near misses, but with the exception of Quicksilver, core heroes have fared pretty well so far.

However, it seems like this has all been building up to a lot of death in Avengers: Infinity War. This became especially clear in the latest trailer, which is essentially just a montage of different Avengers getting tortured and beaten half to death.

There are some heroes who look to be in particularly dire situations, like the Vision. Since the Vision’s connection to the mind stone could very well be the thing that keeps him alive, he probably isn’t headed towards a happy ending. While Paul Bettany has hinted that the Vision might not need the gem to survive, having it forcibly removed from his face is certainly going to cause some negative effects.

We also see Thanos holding Thor’s head in a way that looks like he could squash it like a melon. Since this seems like it will be relatively early on in the movie based on how Thanos’ ship runs into Thor at the end of Ragnarok, this probably won’t be the way the King of Asgard goes out. However, many have speculated that this will be where Loki ends up biting the dust.

Doctor Strange is then seen being tortured by Ebony Maw, a scene that has prompted lots of speculation. The trailer then closes out with both Captain America and Iron in desperate situations, with Thanos seemingly about to kill each of them.

The Russo brothers have said that the characters who die in the movie are going to stay dead, and if one of those characters happens to be a founding member of the Avengers, the MCU is soon going to look very different.

While there are going to be a ton of heroes in this movie, the loss of some side characters would not have the same emotional effect as the loss of a character that has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the better part of a decade.

Among the original Avengers, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man all have their deaths teased the most in this trailer. Of course, this doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily end up getting killed. Captain America: Civil War made many people think War Machine was done for, and some fans, myself included, thought Cap would meet his demise.

The movie might not go down this route, but there’s a decent chance one of the original members aren’t going to survive Infinity War. Hawkeye is noticeably absent in the trailer and all marketing materials, which could mean a whole host of different things. Mark Ruffalo has referred to Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff as star-crossed lovers, so it’s possible one of them is going to be killed off.

But do one of these characters have to die to prove that the stakes are high? It all depends on execution. Going back to Civil War, none of the Avengers died in the airport fight, but after War Machine got hit by the Vision's blast, it felt like somebody easily could. While some heroes are going to have to lose their lives in the fight against Thanos, what’s most important is building an atmosphere that makes us think anybody could be a goner.

Even though many fans have been clamoring for some real stakes, if too many familiar faces die, there will surely be complaints that the next lineup of Avengers isn’t as good as the old one. Considering this, and the fact that fans are going to want meaningful deaths and not just bodies dropping left and right, the Russo brothers have a pretty difficult job.

In order to achieve the apocalyptic stakes that the trailers promise, Infinity War will have to not just kill a bunch of characters, but kill the right characters. Since we don’t really know where the story is going to go in Avengers 4, it’s impossible to say who these characters are, but it’s a safe bet that one of the founding members of the team is going to die.

No matter what the consequences of Thanos’ invasion are, they are going to greatly impact where the series goes from here. Since this has been a film ten years in the making without any real precedent, there’s no template for how Marvel should handle character deathsand that’s part of what makes this movie so intriguing.

Nope, unless it's done in a way that's earned and honours the character

I'll be shocked if it doesn't, i'll be shock if it does. One thing is sure: my heart will be torn into pieces after this movie.

At first, I didn't mind if they killed off an original Avenger but since the announcement of Disney purchasing fox studios which in turn FF and X-men coming to MCU in the future,
I don't want anyone die. I just want the original Avengers meeting the X-men and FF on the big screen.

@dracula - Only been confirmed for Avengers 4. Plus I'm sure Ant-Man & The Wasp will explain that, if they don't at least cameo.

@dracula - I think Hulk is safe in this universe. The fact that they can’t make a solo movie means there’s a lot of screen time opened up for him to still be developed in other movies especially Avengers. He hasn’t had 3 solo movie like each of the big 3

An actual quality Op-ed? Knew it couldn't be a certain Wildling...

As for the question, technically, no one has to die. But there are high chances that one of them will.

I don't want the big ones to die. Definitely some smaller characters like War Machine could, but I'd rather the heroes survive and make cameo appearances in future films. Like, maybe Cap becomes the Director of a new organization like SWORD (not sure if Disney owns their rights) and pops up when Marvel does Secret Invasion

Some people that will die will (temporarily) come back for Avenger 4. To right the wrongs that Thanos causes to the MCU reality. And then (by their actions) the will die for good.

In order to right the wrongs that Thanos has caused, they will create the conditions of their "permanent" death.

Not until we get a proper reunion and some catharsis of unity and getting the job done. If Thanos is going to be in Avengers 4, so does the core six.

I really think half of the heroes will die in Infinity War, but they will be back in Avenges 4. Then all DC fanboys will joy because they'll have the perfect excuse to trash on the MCU because there are no consequences and these movies are for kids.
TheIronDuck
TheIronDuck - 3/21/2018, 10:25 PM
Most of them will die and Avengers 4 will be Tony, Scott, Hope, Carol, and Barton using the Time Gem to bring them back and defeat Thanos as a unified team.

Caps death would mean the heart of the Avengers is destroyed and the death of Iron Man would mean the spine of the team is ripped out. I'm betting it's one or the other based on the contract status of the actors playing the role. In that light, Thor is also a possibility. There's no Asgard and after this hardly any Asgardians, then it's a real possibility. If they're playing it safe, I reckon Black Widow is the one.

I'm sick of the blood thirsty attitude of "People need to die for there to be gravitas!" You can up the stakes and create powerful drama without the need to immaturely kill people left right and center. Either way, I'm sure if the Russos kill a character it will be a death that has purpose (like T'Chaka), and not in Whedon's butt-of-the-joke style (Quicksilver).

I think the big 3 do. Firstly it makes sense from a logistical standpoint. These guys have all had their own trilogies, all been in at least 3 teacups, run through their full and in some cases extended contracts, are getting older and won’t be able to do this forever, want to move on creatively (although I think that’s overstated by many) and there needs to be room in slate for new characters. We already have Guardians about to round out a trilogy but Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and soon Captain Marvel will be headed that route and they can only add so many tertiary characters to the Avengers movies without the being core members, do you really want Black Panther or Captain Marvel to be a footnote like Ant-Man was in Civil War for the next 10 years? But also from a creative level there’s really nowhere else for these 3 characters to go. They all have 6+ movies with Arcs 3 of which being all about them. We’ve seen Tony go from greedy arms dealer, to responsibility driven business man, to super hero, to significant other of pepper, to Mentor to Peter, to active political force focusing on the needs of the world as he views it. We’ve seen Steve go from weak yet noble man, to a strong man that’s only mission is to do what’s right and above all serve his country, to a selfless hero that sacrifices himself for the greater good, to man out of time, to clandestine operative, to disillusioned about the government, to outright vigilante and fugitive actively defying every government in the world to do what he feels is necessary. We’ve seen Thor go from spoiled and arrogant god with a naivety that always is his downfall, to humble human, to selfless hero, to someone who can best Loki when it comes to schemes and lies, to Gladiator, and finally king. The best thing they can do with these characters from a logistical and creative standpoint in my opinion is end them. Give them the opportunity to make the ultimate sacrifice and give who and what they are permanent meaning in this universe. I don’t want to see Tony Stark showing up making jokes in 2025 and it’s not because I don’t love it it’s because I want these characters I love to go out on top. Inevitable something will happen, a death, and injury, an actor will quit and we’ll all be hoping they played their best hand when they had all the cards. So I think it best they die. Plus as far as the dynamic at least skill wise is concerneced in the Avengers it really wouldn’t change much. Bucky, War Machine, and Valkyrie (although I’d prefer it was Bet Ray Bill) all provide the same basic power and skill set to the team should they need them and I’d rather have new characters like Strange, T’chall, and even Scott become the main personalities to give the team a new social dynamic anyway so I say end it
