Damion Poitier On Being THANOS; Says He Thought He Would Be SUPER SKRULL
Saying that he thought he was auditioning for Super Skrull in Marvel's The Avengers, Damion Poitier talked about getting the chance to work with Joss Whedon and to briefly become one of the most powerful villains in Marvel Comics: Thanos.
Despite Josh Brolin taking over as Thanos in this summers's Guardians of the Galaxy as well as in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, Damion Poitier will still be known as the actor to first play Thanos in the amazing and now-iconic post-credits in Marvel's The Avengers. While he didn't get to talk about the 'Men In Black 3' star taking over as the Mad Titan, he did get to reminisce about his time working with Joss Whedon on the movie. He talked about what it was like when he found out he would be Thanos. "I found out when I was in the makeup chair what I was doing," he revealed. "They kept it super quiet because they didn't wanna put any spoilers out. So they kept it super quiet what I was doing, and I didn't found out until they were casting my face to do the sculpt." He was asked what role he thought he was being cast as when he went in. "I thought I was Kl'rt," he said. Those of you who know about the Marvel Cosmic mythos, you will know that the character he was referring to is none other than the Super Skrull. "I thought I was gonna be the Super Skrull, because the whole rumor was that the Skrulls were going to be in Avengers." The Skrulls of course were one of the many aliens races rumored to be Loki's army in the movie, but were instead the Chitauri, the Ultimate Universe version of the Skrulls.
He was also asked if he had to audition or if they contacted him for the role. "It was a pretty simple audition process. They just really wanted someone to stand up, turn around, and smile, which is what was necessary. It just so happens I know Joss and everyone, so things kind of [worked]." Damion Poitier has worked with Avengers director Joss Whedon a few times in the past, specifically on projects such Firefly, Angel, and Dollhouse. He was asked what it was like working with Joss, saying that "He's awesome." He goes on to say "He's been in it so long, he knows exactly what he's doing, he knows exactly what he wants, but he's also willing to play, to see if you come up with something different than what he thought an if it works better, and if he likes it he'll bring it in. Because he uses the same people over and over again, it's a very family-like experience when you're working with Joss. You feel like you're part of the family, and it's everything you want to be when you're working with a director." Going back to his experience as being cast as Thanos, he said he was disapointed that he couldn't tell anyone. "I'm in the makeup chair, and I knew a couple of the guys, but I didn't know everybody, so I had to keep my cool. I was really excited, but then I was really horrified because I couldn't tell anybody." Finally, he expressed interest in returning as Thanos, saying "Of course! Why wouldn't I want to do such a thing!" The scene in Avengers that Damion Poitier starred in is known as many to be one of the greatest Marvel after-credits scenes. Do you agree? Sound off below.
