Joss Whedon Confirms That He Is Directing The Avengers

Never did get that press release from Marvel! But just now at SDCC, Whedon has confirmed he is helming the fanboy Mecca known as The Avengers..

Source: Whedonesque

Picking up various bits of info at the moment, but the confirmation comes courtesy of Whedonesque.

When asked about the film, Whedon said..

"It’s not an official thing, I think because Marvel couldn’t afford a press release, Can I make that an official thing? I am directing THE AVENGERS!" -

Its no surprise of course, but nice to have it FINALLY confirmed. Marvel for whatever reason, have never sent out any kind of official press release.

Whedon also says:

"I started to work on an internet piece with Warren Ellis called Wastelanders, but then Avengers came up and he said 'I'll just wait then." it's a little early, I am still writing an outline and reworking it. What interested me is these people (Avengers) shouldn't be in the same room as one another & that to me is the definition of family"

"i honestly watch (JJ's) Star Trek and its the gold standard for a team movie/summer action and it makes me throw up w/fear about Avengers"

The EW panel with Whedon and JJ Abrahms is currently underway, but both are now discussing their next projects, Super 8(Abrams) and Cabin In The Woods(Whedon). If any more Avengers related stuff comes up I'll update so keep your eyes peeled.

Great news, though I already figured he had it! Another crack at an ensemble cast and having characters who are at odds with each other work as a team for the greater good. Perfect guy for the job.

Grrrreat!!!

Now everybody can quit saying it's not official!
When he says that JJ Abram's Star Trek is the
gold standard and he's going to follow it and it
makes him violently ill to the stomach to think
about this huge undertaking it makes me KNOW that
Joss Whedon is the perfect guy to direct THE
AVENGERS, family members indeed!

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE & MAKE MINE MARVEL FOREVER!!!!!

He may be directing but he hasn't really had any power over the movie (ex. him wanting Norton back, yes I'm still mad about that) yet so it's hard to care.

@ creature

i think you need to realize that everyone on this site is an individual, and we're not part of some hive mind.

i, for one, have wanted him to direct since i first heard it was a possibility.

I have wanted Whedon since the news was first rumored.

Joey Misfit@ Huh? Apparently you have never watched Firefly or Serenity. Definitely an adult series and movie.

...and people are still whining about Norton who would have had a few minutes, at best, in the Avengers movie.

Funny he should compare The Avengers to Star Trek. I did an editorial a while back on the very same thing.

Didn't we all know this already?
He is a good choice, not superb or anything just fine, in my opinion.

Whedon is staying faithful to both the traditional tone of The Avengers comics and the new version of the characters being established in the new Marvel movies. He claims writing the team ensemble film will be aided by the fact that he knows the actors playing each part and what kind of feel each of the lead-in films – Iron Man, Thor and Captain America – will have.
