Joss Whedon Says That THE AVENGERS Takes Place Mostly From Captain America's Point Of View

Unfortunately, there's no new images from The Avengers in Entertainment Weekly's 2012 preview, but they do have a brief interview with director Joss Whedon in which he points out that while the team members have a mostly equal share of the movie, it's Captain America: The First Avenger which really sets the stage and the character himself who takes most of the spotlight in the superhero ensemble.

"I set out with a very simple problem: There is no reason for these people to be in the same movie. So that's what my movie has to be about. So much of the movie takes place from Steve Rogers' perspective, since he's the guy who just woke up and sees this weird ass world. Everyone else has been living in it."

Seems like a pretty good idea if any of approaching the problem of all these superhero's styles clashing.

We're new to it all with them working as a team dynamic and so is Cap, so yeah we would share that with him (albeit with a little insider knowledge about other team members having seeen all the other films).

Good decision. I met a guy at a bbq we threw who was on the crew for Avengers and he said he heard it was Captain America centric (also said Evans is the biggest premadonna of the cast too though!)

I figure Tony Stark and Steve Rogers will be vying for leadership of the group throughout the movie. Doubt Bruce Banner would care. Maybe Thor would throw down to lead as well but I really hope but they cant be too democratic with the focus of a sprawling movie like this. I feel the central relationship should and WILL be the partnership of Tony and Steve. And somewhere near the end going into the climax Tony will say something along the lines of "Take the lead Cap"... Finally call him "Cap". Remember Tony was neglected by his father growing up while his father obviously had a deep friendship and loyal obsession with finding Steve Rogers. In a way Tony might be embittered about Steve's closeness to Howard Stark. They have some hurdles to overcome.

You have to set it from someone's point of view with so many characters.

Probably the same reason the X-men films seem to focus so much on Wolverine.

Could (kind of) argue the same for Thor. But this is the best option, from the leader.

Very pleased with this. I always assumed Whedon would base the film around the perspective of Hawkeye, since he's the new guy and very human, but Steve makes sense. He's very fish-out-of-water and earnest in an old-school American way.

@dragonking555 I wouldn't necessarily call it losing sense of purpose. I'd say it be more from the perspective of "Okay, so I've got a dude who has armor and flies, a guy who turns into a ten foot rage beast, and a Norse God. And the only people here that are normal utilize almost completely different methods and have completely different values from me. And what's a freaking iPad!?!"

Also Tony Stark as more of a side character (and not full on lead) might benefit that character even more. Jack Sparrow was at his best in Pirates 1 when he was more of a side-option. the co-protagonist. Like Han Solo. But giving the cool cavalier side hero the lead sometimes has a neutering effect. Tony Stark has held up as a lead but in a way he is the fun and fancy free secondary lead archetype who might function even better in a slightly subordinate role. He is Han to Cap's Luke.

that sucks, i don't like Capt that much and Iron Man has grown on me. the first Avenger was a weak film in my eyes. the first 15mins was really great when he was skinny Steve then he lost his heart i thought, but whatever can't wait:P

@JKM Cap is leader of the Avengers, the fear was Iron Man being the focus and knocking Cap out of that spot because RDJ is more popular or whatever reason.

He said this before. He's a man out of his original time. When he enters this crazy world he'll overwhelmed by the personalities he'll meet: a man in a metal suit, a rocker-looking demigod, and a black guy in charge of an anti-terrorism organization. Oops, did I say that? Whedon definitely has great confrontations between the Captain and the other heroes. Okay, so epic character story? Check! Now where's the antagonist?

@Supes17 - I think it was a given that Cap and Iron Man would anchor this story and that Thor might easily get lost in the mix. The fact that he has the closest ties to the villain is good enough insurance that Thor will have his own shit to deal with in the movie even if technically he gets less screen time than Cap and Iron Man. If Hulk seems like the odd man out, well who knows- Ruffalo will probably quietly steal the movie. Wouldnt be surprised.

This makes good narrative sense. I also like that they'll be paying attention to Cap's adjustment to the vastly different world he lives in compared to what he knows.

it makes sense to have a movie from a 'newbie' point of view in an ensemble movie as that person is essentially you asking questions.

Ehh, that's cool and all but it would be cooler if it was from each teammates or at least the major teammates' point of view. Capt, Iron man, Thor, and Hulk.

I would prefer if it was more of a duel perspective from both Captain and Ironman's POV. Tony Stark has too big of a personality and is too great of a character to be a secondary player.
