Kevin Feige Speaks On Future Films, Maintaining Standalone Stories, And More!

The head honcho of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige speaks in detail on adapting future films to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, & maintaining a standalone story. Check it out!

The folks over at the Box Office Magazine recently chatted with the driven force behind Marvel Studios, President of production Kevin Feige. Essentially speaking in-depth on maintaining standalone stories for upcoming films, Feige also dots on Iron Man 3, as well a tentative Doctor Strange flick.

How much do you think of each new Marvel movie in the context of the larger cinematic universe, as opposed to being a self-contained story?
They're all developed separately—they're all developed on their own with the sole intent of making the best movie possible for this character. We do have timelines and various markers that we like to keep track of across the movies, and head into future movies potentially. But that's always sort of the seasoning as opposed to the actual ingredients of the movie. We're in very early stages of talking about the story for Iron Man 3 with our writer-directors on that, and the discussions have been only about Tony Stark and Tony Stark's story and what we feel like putting him through in this movie. There's been no discussion of the connection between the other worlds, and there may not ever be a discussion about that. But again, it's the comics. In some comics, the heroes are standalone completely, and in other comics, they team up or gather into the Avengers. So it's always about whatever is the story we're telling. In the Thor film, the inclusion of SHIELD was based on the need for a Black Ops, for a CIA, for a Men in Black-type organization, and we had the end of that movie, before we had the beginning of Avengers, because we need these movies to work as their own movies—because that's what they are. If it were really just about making a bunch of small movies that led up to other movies, they would be a third of the cost and it would be a whole different exercise.

How many of your upcoming projects will operate in the same world as your current and previous adaptations, and how many won't fit or won't be connected?
Well, because they all come from the comics, and the comics for the most part, 90% of them is a shared universe, it's just assumed that they all take place within this universe. How much we go out of our way to play with that or suggest that depends on what the character is. Doctor Strange, which is only in long-lead development and has been for many years, has got one of the best origin stories of any of our characters, and like Thor taps into the cosmic world, he taps into this magic world. So between introducing Stephen Strange and making him the Sorcerer Supreme, exploring this sort of unabashedly magic side of the universe, I don't know how there would be room for Tony Stark to show up and wave, or have the Hulk come barreling down the street. I don't think there's the need.

You have a number of upcoming projects listed on the always-reliable IMDB. How many of those are being actively developed in unison?
I think really what that is is a list of stuff that we have worked on at one point or another over the last ten years. Ant-Man certainly is, and it's something we hope to do soon with Edgar [Wright, director of Shaun of the Dead], although we've not announced anything yet. I mean, really the official stuff is Avengers and then Iron Man 3—those are the most active, of course. As I said earlier, Don Payne is working on the story for Thor 2, should we be so lucky, and our writers, Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely, who did Captain America for us, are starting to work on Captain America 2 because if we are going to make a sequel, we want to be ready, we want to be prepared for it. But we're not focusing a whole lot of attention on that right now because we're focusing on the first ones—and without that, there won't be anything else. And then there's the wish list—there's Doctor Strange, which I've been talking about for years, and Black Panther, more of the blue-sky development that comes down the line.

There is no "hook" to Luke Cage... That makes him a hell of a hard sell. They could do a low budget film and hope to get a small hit out of it, but they'd have to sweat out the possibility of a Jonah Hex, Elektra or Punisher result. The character would work better on a television show.

Cant wait for a Black Pannther, Luke Cage, and Doctor Strange flick. This guy did lose a couple of cool points from me after what he did to Edward Norton and Jon Faverau.

I want a Hulk sequel so bad. I love that Thor was so fantastic, and I think that if Marvel focused a little less on "realism," we'd see a Hulk movie that fans of the Jade Giant would go nuts for. Don't get me wrong, I loved The Incredible Hulk (2008). I thought it was a great Bruce Banner movie, but its depiction of the Hulk was sub-par in comparison to Hulk (2003). I wanna see Hulk doing the crazy shit he did in that first movie... just without [frick]ing Eric Bana... and those damn hulk dogs...

Plus, I just would love to see Ruffalo actually take ownership of that franchise so I can feel right about him being in The Avengers.

I honestly don't care much for either Dr. Strange or Hank Pym. At the top of my wish list is Iron Fist, which is one of those projects not mentioned in this story that has been kicked around for a decade. I am thankful, however, that Marvel got the rights back from Artisan and saved it from getting the "Punisher" film treatment. Matt Damon could play a compelling Danny Rand.

#2 on my list is definitely Nova. Screw any potential comparisons to GL and Iron Man, Marvel could easily make a trilogy out of Richard Rider's origin and wars with Annihilus or even Thanos if they wanted to really broaden the scope.

I'll get my fill of Hawkeye and Hulk in the Avengers.

Hmm...so I see Doc Strange is gaining steam. I love the cosmic part of Marvel. If they can pull it off, then other less popular characters can have success. The key is to bring the non-comic book can to the theater.

They know the fanboys are going to come. Prime example is Thor. My wife could care less about comics, but she loved Thor, and to me he's the toughest sell, next to Doc Strange. Looking forward to whatever Marvel does next.

Dr. Strange would be very cool and I'm in agreement with most on Johnny Depp being ideal for the role. I'm hoping Marvel can do something with the Punisher. Bring back Thomas Jane and give the movie a proper budget!

Incredible Hulk is over as a stand alone movie. TV is where it belongs, it allows for us to see his journey. Plus nobody wants to see him hunted by the government.

I was watching Iron Man last night and for the first time I paid attention to Jarvis talking about how the suit could be adjusted if he planned on going to other planets. I'm sure he was being sarcastic, but at the same time they gave some high-tech explanation of the process. Something about the metal or what not.

THOR is the first real MARVEL comics comicbook movie. They really went there with Asgard and the entire cosmos/worm hole thing. When you look at the frost Giants and that beast that caught a ThunderGod bullet through the head, it's exciting to know that Stark exist in the same universe.

@Neobaggins i totally agree.

Black Panther is a sleeper hit like Iron Man one. Just watch the animated series that came out and tell me the Black Panther isn't a hero you would be interested in.

Thor was amazing.
Captain America has a lot to live up to but I'm sure it will be awesome as well.
The Avengers will be absolutely phenomenal!!
Dr. Strange has serious potential but I'm not really pushing for Jonny Depp, as badass as he is for some reason he doesn't fit to me idk. If he gets the role Dr. Strange will automatically be a box office hit and get a trilogy lol. (Maybe)
I'm not too familiar with Black Panther so idk who his villians are or whatever, but whenever he crosses over into the books I read he's a badass so I would deffinetly go see his movie.
If they do Luke Cage he should be done in the proposed Alias tv show.
Iron Fist would kick all kinds of ass!! I just don't know who could play him. (Matt damon? Really? Get a grip dude)
A solo SHIELD movie could help set up quite a few movies for the next few years too. Hawkeye, Black Widow and Fury plus maybe a couple others could hold it together for sure.
Sequels for Thor and Captain America have an amazing amount of potential. For Thor you've got the Wrecking Crew, The Enchantress (still think that's Kat Dennings btw) and Executioner, and Surtur would be dope as hell!
Cap has Winter Soldier (who could almost be a whole sequel) Fury and SHIELD could be a strong presence in them as well. Plus Red Skull and maybe the Invaders too.
If they got all their rights back from the dumbass studios that have them their Cinematic Universe would tower over the film industry for yeeeears to come.

I would love to see them do a New Warriors movie. I agree with others here that a Luke Cage film could be pretty cool. How about tagteaming him with Iron Fist? Twice as much awesomeness! Nova is another character that could give us a really cool movie, depending on the story. I don't care as much for his more recent series, preferring the ones from the '70s and '90s.

If we're getting a sequel to Thor, how about the Wrecking Crew or the Absorbing Man?

I would also love to see Marvel step up their animated feature department. DC's animated features are consistently excellent, and Marvel has quite a few great stories that would work well in animation.

THOR 2
CAPTAIN AMERICA 2
