Tom Hiddleston On The Psychology Of 'Loki' And Thrill To Return In The Avengers!

Tom Hiddleston, largely discussing his passion for Loki as a character & the privilege to expand the role in Marvel's The Avengers, as well the process & more, Check it out!

Contracted to keep quiet ever since production wrapped on Marvel & Kenneth Branagh's Thor film, 'Loki' actor Tom Hiddleston has been taking full advantage of sharing his passion for the God Of Mischief, and the direction & opportunity of expanding the role in Joss Whedon's Marvel's The Avengers. Labeling 'Loki' as Marvel's response to the DC's praised-Joker in The Dark Knight among other things, check out what Hiddleston had to say from one of yesterday's many interviews.

Foremost, on expanding the role, Hiddleston says. . .
"I start in about 10 days, in New Mexico. It's thrilling because I feel that I've already built the character, I know who he is, and it's almost like meeting an old friend. I have to change my hair color again before I start [laughs], but aside from that it's very familiar territory. It's mad! It's also a privilege to have the opportunity to play such a favorite villain once, but to come back again -- and this time against seven superheroes -- it's wild. It's like ticking a box on our childhood wish list, to play a character like this that's never been done on this scale."

And on his passion for Loki & direction in The Avengers, Hiddleston says. . .
"I love that Loki has hugely fascistic and autocratic plans for the Universe, but at the same time.. I love those issues of the comics where he would do something like turn a sky of clouds into dragons, just for kicks. Just to see how the puny Earthlings would respond. If the Joker is DC [Comics'] 'agent of chaos' then Loki is Marvel's response... he's such a juicy character and Joss Whedon has taken him in a really fascinating and interesting direction, even fitting in the continued development of his relationship with his brother Thor. I absolutely cannot wait to get started!

Finally, on the psychology of Loki, and his presence in The Avengers, Hiddleston says. . .
The thing to remember is that Loki is one of Marvel's most intelligent characters, he's this cosmic puppet master pulling the strings behind the curtain. He has ways and methods to his madness that are beyond the fathom-ability of the Avengers heroes. At the end of Thor [Thor Spoiler Alert]we find Loki -- in a sense -- letting go of Asgard and Odin, but he's never really 'lost.' When we finally encounter him in Avengers no one knows exactly where he's been -- and we'll see that over the course of the film -- or how much more powerful he may have become. He truly is a major threat on a cosmic, universal scale not just for the superheroes confronting him but for humanity."

Marvel's The Avengers picks up when an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security. And Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston & Stellan Skarsgård, the film releases May 4, 2012!

It seems very obvious that he has plans to take over Midgard. God.... just the idea of Iron Man and Captain America acknowledging his presence is an awesome one.

7 superheroes?

Cap, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Widow, Hawkeye and...Nick? is Nick a superhero per se? Maybe Hiddeleston was just saying it and not meaning he is an out and out hero, just for ease of speach y'know? War Machine? I didn't think he'd been confirmed?
Is it one of them or am I being thick and forgot someone?

Damn, I wish all actors in these films would be as psyched as he sounds. After seeing Thor and hearing this, I cannot help but feel that he seems to have a real grip on the character. The Avengers is gonna rock!

@Bobby2899, Nick Fury is pretty much in the same boat as Hawkeye and the Black Widow. None of them have any straight up superpowers, but are all in that "larger than life" mold.

@Superbats: It was released in the UK over a week ago (and in Australia a week before that).

Makes a nice change that we get to see a film before you yanks. For years it's been the other way around. ;)

Apparently it's all to do with school holidays and the like - Australia had a 6 day holiday week, and the UK had two bank holidays (Friday to Monday) in succession on those weeks. It was Paramount's call and they've got a good track record with this kind of stuff, so that's why.

Not that it'll make you feel any better, but at least now you know. ;)

TDK was boring as hell except for a couple of scenes, I bet If Heath Ledger would've been alive, the movie wouldn't be in people's mouth. It was an OK movie, nothing else, Jack Nicholson IS the joker. And Tom as Loki was a perfect cast, as well as Chris Hemsworth.

@ maverickaim

I soooooo agree with you!

I've never been able to watch that movie a second time.

And Tom Hiddleston's performance as Loki is better IMO than Ledger's because Loki in the THOR movie is a 3-dimensional real character whilst the Joker was a 1-dimensional psycho clown.

Loki was by for the best part of this film. He out acted every actor or actress in this film. I was able to see the movie in 3D IMAX because I won tickets for an advance screening. I give this movie 4 out of 5. I'm a true die-hard Thor fan. I have every comic from his first appearance to now. With that being said, the highlights of this movie were LOKI, the action scene's, Thor when he was he was Thor, Odin and the rest of the Asgard scene's (other then Heimdall). The problems: TOO MUCH STUPID JANE FOSTER scene's, she was in this movie way to much. Earth Thor was too long and the acting wasn't that great, during these scene's. Not enough helmet wearing for Thor. I thought the 3D version was alright, it's worth seeing in 3D. The good of this movie was amazing, the bad was mainly Jane Foster. GO see this film.

@TheIntruder & CaptainOtter

Well that was my exact point. Clearly Nick is not a 'superhero' per say nor did anyone mention superpowers making a superhero. My question was who does he mean by 7? Yes he is taking on Nick indirectly and while I wouldnt count him as a superhero I was wondering if Tom was just saying it as its quicker than saying '6 heroes and Nick' or if he meant someone else (such as Rhodey-which Im not sure about either). I realise Nick doesnt fall in that category and what I was asking is who do people think he means by 7 as by my reckoning only 6 are confirmed unless he is including Nick (which I already confessed seems dubious). Never said he was going to be an Avenger and neither did Hiddleston and that wasnt my point. Nor did I mean does he have straight up superpowers as I know he doesn't. Not having a go btw just clarifying what I meant.

Also I don't think it'll be Captain Marvel. I'm just not seeing that as a smart move for the first film. To be honest I think he might have just meant Nick and we are blowing this up like fanboys do and analysing everyword. I think if you ask a general public member they would allow Nick to fit the role of 'superhero' and to be fair he is a super-hero.
