If you were a fan of Son of the Demon and many other elseworlds, then you would have been very polarized when Grant Morrison began to spin threads regarding Damian Wayne. It took time but eventually, the majority came to accept the Batman #666 anti-hero, which came to the fore at the uproar of his death last year in Batman Inc.

Son of Batman offers more than glimpses at the Morrison lore while still hinging new elements that divisive DC comic scribe, James Robinson, concocted. It's one of the most direct, violent and blood-curdling films to date with a lot of adult concepts touched on, especially sex and a bit of drugs, but at times, the film seems to cast characters in a light that seem out of depth and well, uncharacteristic. Is this negligible? Maybe to some. But while DC ekes out another fun-ride with jarring action sequences, they're still in a rut because they havent' left the plateau they set so many years ago animation-wise. They seem stagnant and maybe until they move to other characters oustide of Batman, Superman and the core JLA, this may allow Marvel some time to catch up.

The story's vocal cast is good on paper but just doesn't seem to resonate on film. It focuses on Deathstroke's uprising to bring the League of Assassins to its feet, after his rejection of course, and in the process, he runs afoul of Damian, who alters Slade's origins a bit, which leads to Talia's asking of Bruce to tend to their son while she tries to investigate. While Bruce tries to impress on the kid, Talia and Deathstroke's pasts collide due to problems the League created regarding Dr. Langstrom. Man-Bats, Killer Croc, nifty little cameos and many other comic-related elements appear to glue the story together but a lackuster Slade, a very sub-par League and the decision to switch Damian's animosity from Tim Drake to Nightwing inscribes a few plot holes, that take away from the gravity of the movie. Sometimes, the gritty vibe got lost as it felt a bit too cartoony with deus ex machinas thrown in for the sake of throwing them in - all things that DC Animation seemed to have a fix for in times past.

It's high octane with a lot of witty banter and very impetuous when it needs to be but DC struggled to strike the balance with substance and style to make the brat called Damian Wayne click as someone that Bruce really needs to put alongside him. It's a story rushed but clearly, with a lot of source to compress, these kinks were expected.

Couldn't agree with you more Hulkfan2013.

I looked forward to watching this, even preordered it which I very rarely do, i settled down with my nephew, whose a huge batman fan and within about forty minutes I was looking at the clock checking how much more of it I had to watch. Before the first hour was up my nephew asked if he could go and play xbox instead, because it wasn't the way he liked batman, I told him to hold out that there wasn't much more and by the end I put the blu ray on ebay, what a waste of money and time.

here's hoping I get my money back.

@djv1985 I was shocked at how poorly the characters were portrayed. There was a lot of action for the most part, but ultimately it was booooooooriiing! That's a crime i can't forgive.

The last few DCA movies have been crap. I also hate the new Anime-like animation style. I would love to see a fully CG film. Imagine something like Arkham Origins as a movie.

I knew this was gonna suck. Flashpoint Paradox is still DC Animations best film imo. Hopefully we can get back to that standard because their films lately are bad.

Its up on torrent. It was bad. When we all praised Flashpoint for its next step in violence, I think DC misunderstood us. That movie needed the violence to showcase the stakes of that world. Whereas this Batman movie sacrifices good animation and storytelling for unnecessary gore. (If that makes sense) there was no real plot. It was Batman and Damian go from point A to Point B looking for deathstroke. It shouldve focused more on the brooding dark knight learning to be a father figure and the foreign child prodigy Damian adapting to his new role as a sidekick and son. The film was very forgettable. The animation in the opening sequence was so bad. The setting lacked detail and "life" onscreen it just looked like a flash animator put moving sticks on screen. 5/10

Just watched it. Enjoyed Damiens ineractions with BRUCE and Alfred but beyond that i found it to be mediocre at best dreadful at worst. So mundane and unimportant. Seemed really small. No where near the best of animated Batman.

I really enjoyed it because I love Damian but I'm really disgusted that they used Morrison's rape origin.

Watched it yesterday & i have to say it was my least favourite DCAM from the mischaracterisation o deathstroke to the unnecessary amount of blood I feel that this new direction is putting me off, hopefully Assault on Arkham being outside this new continuity means it'll be another TDKR or Flashpoint.

Is there a reason these films are becoming more violent. I cant imagine there was a huge demand for it. DC were doing fine as they were. I wouldnt say i hated it but i prefer implied violence in these films such as the bag of severed heads in Under The Red Hood. Let the audience do part of the work.

Been waiting around for this. I'll have to give it a go anyway. While we're discussing animation, what's the verdict on The Flashpoint Paradox?

I actually enjoyed it. The action was great and arguably the most brutal we have seen in these films.

For me it's an Ok going Bad movie. They are dropping the quality a lot with the last 2 animated movies. I don't know what happened, but it feels that DC Animation is no longer trying to honor good stories, they are just doing the movies just for the sake of it.

The movie is full of plot holes and ask a lot from the viewer. If they plan to make a violent adult oriented movie, they should take care of the details. Ninjas vs Machine Guns? No Security Systems in a Secret Stronghold? A regular human kid that can master hand to hand combat with stronger and bigger opponents? C'mon... this is a lazy script and animation.

For example... they could improve upon the source material. Damian's combat abilities should be based on creativity, agility and speed rather than strength. A kid avoids hand to hand combat in creative ways, because it's impossible to believe that a non super powered kid can take down a large skilled fighter. For example in the anime Noir, Kirika uses her mind to turn anything into a weapon and she is fast. Hit Girl uses weapons, she is fast and a sharp shooter, but not a strong fighter. Damian should be like that. Instead he is like a super strong dwarf and this make Deathstroke look bad... very bad.

The relationship between Bruce and Damian is never developed. It's rushed so the brat can show off in several pointless action sequences. Bruce has no authority and never earns the kid's respect. A professional writer should be able to handle this adaptation if they wanted to explore this side of Batman. I think that Under The Red Hood did it better, you can feel Batman's regret about his failure with Jason. With this is a completely robotic reaction... you have a son... OK... he was raised as an assassin... Ok. I drive... No. I know that Batman doesn't show his emotions too often, but c'mon. He doesn't even try to build a relationship with his son. Just generic things like... We don't kill are not enough.

I haven't read the comic... so I can't compare, but I feel that they wasted a good opportunity to explore Batman's humanity. He is a father figure for several characters... they even explored this in a better way in a 20 minute episode of Young Justice, how come they can't do it in a 70 minute movie. For this reason the decision Damian take by the end of the movie doesn't feel accurate. ***SPOILER*** Why would he choose Batman over Talia?***SPOILER***

I hope DC go back to the right path and keep making high quality animation, not boring and generic stuff like this.
