DC Studios Co-Chair James Gunn Refutes Rumor That Batman Is The Next Hero To Be Cast In The DCU

Recently, DC Studios co-chair and Superman: Legacy director James Gunn revealed that two more DCU projects were preparing to ramp up production efforts, leading to rumors that casting Batman would be next.

The ever social media-present James Gunn recently shared that two more projects besides Superman: Legacy and Creature Commandos are looking to start production very soon. Superman: Legacy is currently set for release on July 11, 2025, while Creature Commandos will hit Max in late-2024.

With Supergirl recently cast, DC fans are convinced that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be the next DCU film to enter production but what about the second project Gunn teased?

In a different social media post, Gunn stated that filming and releasing The Brave and the Bold does not have to wait for Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's The Batman trilogy to wrap up, meaning that we'll likely have two, cinematic Dark Knights gracing the silver screen at the same time.

Social media scooper Charles Murphy followed up on Gunn's comments to imply that casting for the DCU's Batman would be up next for DC Studios but Gunn has chimed in to put that rumor to rest.

When rolling out the DCU's Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate via YouTube, Gunn had this to share about The Brave and the Bold, "This is the introduction of the DCU's Batman. This is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman's actual son who we didn't know existed for the first eight to 10 years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He's a little son of a bitch. He's my favorite Robin. It's based on the Grant Morrison comic book's run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs, and we are putting that all together right now."

However, it doesn't look as if that's the next DCU project up to bat [no pun intended].

Said Gunn in response to the rumor of a looming Batman casting, "Keep getting this question, don't know where it's coming from but, wherever it is, it's totally false. We don't have a script yet."

Gunn's remarks harken back to a previous social media post where he clued fans in on how tell if a rumor is false. Said Gunn, "I get asked about rumors of various actors being cast in various roles every day. Just a blanket rule to keep in mind while assessing whether these rumors have any truth to them (99% of the time they’re false) - we are never going to cast roles without scripts."

As a soft reboot of the DCEU, the DCU features an ambitious film slate that includes:

  • Superman: Legacy
  • The Authority
  • The Brave and the Bold
  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
  • Swamp Thing

On the television side, highly-anticipated projects include:

Given the list above, what do you think are the two DCU projects that are getting ready to join Superman: Legacy and Creature Commandos in active production? Let us know in the comment section below.

Makes sense…

They have only been able to cast Supergirl so far because a script for her solo film is atleast in the process of being written right now and she may also be appearing in Superman Legacy (which Gunn himself hasn’t confirmed).

Yes they have a director for The Brave & the Bold but no script (or even writer) so how could they cast their version of Batman without knowing how exactly he’s characterized in the film thus what to look for in an actor who could authentically bring that to life?.

Call me crazy, but i feel Gunn should relegate the Batman stuff to television/MAX..

Hear me out...

He's wanting to build out the DCU stuff and also establish the new Batman and Damien/Robin, which means i guess they'll also have to branch out with Dick, Jason, Tim, Barbara, Cassie etc and the shit load of characters know nfrom that corner of the DCU. Gunn stated "though film, television and gaming" and i feel that they're in a unique position to do some great TV stuff and something new outside of Matt Reeve's Batman and Penguin stuff.... and then when there's a need for those characters to show up in the movies, they're already well established...Titans tried and failed but they're budget i can imagine is a fraction of what Gunn and Safran may have access to.

They have a pretty good opporunity there to do better than Marvel in that department. I've also felt Marvel can do this with X-Men, once they've started their new team/reboot, as movies won't do justice the weatlh of stories they have.

@UniqNo - If the new pro-profitability regime at WBD weren't hellbent on seizing on "the theatrical experience" then what you propose could be possible. If there's anything we should rescue over the last 20+ years of DCTV content is that TV allows for way more time to build up and development both characters and story arcs, without saying it's more fun and engaging medium to discuss things than wait years for a movie and then talk about it all once it's over. That's the one thing I see standing in the way of this.

TV helping to establish things for many other characters and for viewers can work and be a blessing, IMO Marvel Studios has achieved that with most of their shows despite the flaws that came with them. (Especially with the new characters) I even thought DC films back then could always rely on what DCTV did and skip, in that case, origins and introductions because their TV peers already did that for the general public.

I'd say Titans failed not soley because of budget but due to writing and the tone/atmosphere they picked. Too serious, without saying their color palette of choice (or "cinematography" as some snobs like to go with) resembling the diluted blue of a show like Ozark did no favours.

So yes you're onto something that should be experimented. If Zaslav wasn't the annoying boss wanting "bigger" things of course and bc at the of the day, Gunn (and Safran) are still his employees.

@NinnesMBC - Titans got a few things right, but yeah, i think there was more wrong. They were also quite limited on the characters they could use i beleive or for how long...Luthor dieing on his first appearance, Bruce out of costume for 1 or 2 episodes, Lionel for a couple minutes etc...

I think if they do it right, and the vision is as broad as he's making it out to be, it could be perfect. But you make really good points.

@HammerLegFoot - Gunn has made it clear that he wants to have a script locked in before everything else, to avoid the production issues that have PLAGUED Warner Bros for years.

There might be some exceptions to this, sure, but for something as important as Batman, I think he wants to make sure he gets this right.

@MarkJulian this is the umpteenth time now…I’m going to keep calling you out. Not even just AI, but one that splices Bale and Affleck? Admit you don’t like this stuff and only do it for the clicks. Absolutely pathetic and all you do is contribute to the downhill momentum this site is undergoing. Pathetic.

We get so little actual news that this site would be dead if that’s all they covered so I understand doing this from a business perspective even if it’s annoying.
