EDITORIAL: The Top 10 DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY Moments

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight series is arguably the greatest CBM trilogy of all time. On the back of my recent article charting the high points of the MCU, I decided to put together a similar one, this time featuring the best moments from these groundbreaking movies. Check it out!

What’s up folks? Thanks to an overwhelmingly positive response from you guys on my last article, I started to wonder… why should Marvel get all the fun? Cited by many as the series that forever changed the comic-book movie industry, Christopher Nolan’s dark and gritty trilogy has always been a favourite of mine. Full of heartwarming emotion, clever symbolism, memorable quotes and some fantastic villains, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises all rank amongst my Top 10 CBMs of all time.

Scroll down to check out some of my favourite moments from the trilogy below…

Honourable Mentions

Ra's Trains BruceBatman Begins

“Theatricality and deception are powerful agents. You must become more than just a man in the mind of your opponents.” – Ra's Al Ghul

Despite having always been the ‘forgotten child’ of the trilogy, I’ve always found Batman Begins matches up to its sequels in almost every department. It’s blessed with a fantastic lead performance from Bale, a plot that twists and turns, and an underrated villain in Liam Neeson’s Ra’s Al Ghul – who has some of his best moments here while training an inexperienced Bruce Wayne.

Group Therapy Session, The Dark Knight

“Hahahahahahahaha ho hehe aha ha ho he ha aha... And I thought my jokes were bad.” – The Joker

Frequently referred to as the highlight of the whole trilogy, Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker was nothing short of magnificent. And while his first appearance in the movie’s opening sequence grabbed my attention, it was this scene that truly wowed me. Able to be both hilarious and frightening at the same time, Ledger’s Joker captivated the audience here, through one simple magic trick…

Batman Sacrifices Himself, The Dark Knight Rises

“A hero can be anyone. Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know that the world hadn't ended.” – Batman

Throughout the trilogy, Batman performs many acts of heroism – but perhaps none more selfess than in the Rises finale. With the clock ticking (albeit rather inconsistently) and time running out, Batman swoops in to save the day – but not before sharing an emotional goodbye with Selina and Gordon. While the final scene reveal may sour the romance of it a little, it still has to rank up there amongst Bats’ greatest deeds.

The Aftermath/Robin RisesThe Dark Knight Rises

“It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known…” – Jim Gordon

While The Dark Knight Rises was easily the most inconsistent of the three, it’s hard to deny how epic its last 20 minutes were. Nolan capped off his fantastic trilogy with a fitting epilogue - featuring Alfred’s emotional goodbye to Bruce, Gordon’s excerpt from Charles Dickens’ A Tale Of Two Cities, and ‘Robin’ John Blake rising as Batman’s new successor.

Top 10

10) The Tunnel ChaseThe Dark Knight

“Come on, come on, come on, I want you to do it, I want you to do it. Come on, hit me. HIT ME!” – The Joker

It’s one of the best action sequences of the whole trilogy – and the first time Batman and the Joker go up against one another. In a masterstroke from composer Hans Zimmer, the whole scene is set to the sound of nothing more than a dull drone, which builds with the tension. Finally, the one-on-one face-off between the machine-gun wielding/suicidal Joker and the Bat-Pod was nothing short of sublime.

9) Bruce Makes The ClimbThe Dark Knight Rises

“What does that mean?” – Bruce Wayne
“Rise.” – Tom Conti

While the whole concept of ‘the climb’ gives rise to a number of plot holes in Rises, the scenes Nolan manages to create with it are superb. Featuring a fantastic call-back to Batman Begins’ “Why Do We Fall” quote, and Christian Bale at his absolute best, Bruce’s pain and struggle is truly inspiring. And as for that soundtrack… incredible stuff.

8) The Joker Vs Two-FaceThe Dark Knight

“Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes... chaos.” – The Joker

The one thing The Dark Knight got right more than anything else were its villains. For me, The Joker and Harvey Dent remain the two best comic-book movie bad-guys we have ever seen (sorry Loki!). No other Batman film has quite managed to replicate what The Dark Knight did here, and find a perfect balance between its two villains. It’s a truly mesmerizing scene.

7) Rachel Finds OutBatman Begins

“It's not who I am underneath... but what I *do*... that defines me.” – Batman

God I love this scene. No matter how cheesy it gets, to me it’ll always be one of my favourite lines from the trilogy. If Bane has the best quotes in Rises, and The Joker wins The Dark Knight, then Bats beats all in the first movie. There’s something undeniably awesome about watching the Caped Crusader say something cool, and then just running off into the night. What a hero.

6) Bane's Blackgate SpeechThe Dark Knight Rises

“The powerful will be ripped from their decadent nests, and cast out into the cold world that we know and endure. Courts will be convened. Spoils will be enjoyed! Blood will be shed. The police will survive, as they learn to serve true justice. This great city, it will endure. Gotham will survive.” – Bane

Tom Hardy and Christopher Nolan created something special with Bane. While perhaps not as brilliant as The Joker, he was certainly as quotable, while also bringing a far more physically imposing threat. But what often gets lost underneath all of the fight scenes and Bane-voice impressions is how well Tom Hardy did in the role - essentially only being able to act with his eyes. And they are terrifying here.

5) Why Do We FallBatman Begins

“Why do we fall sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.” – Alfred Pennyworth

This quote represents the emotional core of a trilogy that had a surprising amount of heart. Popping up throughout the series, it’s most notably used when Alfred saves Bruce from his burning home. The combination of Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard’s poignant score, Alfred’s heartfelt, inspirational words still gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside every time I watch it God I love My Cocaine Michael Caine.

4) Bane Breaks The BatThe Dark Knight Rises

“Oh, you think darkness is your ally. But you merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the light until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING!
The shadows betray you, because they belong to me!” – Bane

As I mentioned earlier, Bane’s inclusion in the series introduced a new kind of threat for Batman – someone who could match (and overpower) him physically. And boy, was he physical? His brutal takedown of the Dark Knight is only made more epic by his awesome dialogue. The villain toys with Batman, goading his spirit for a little while, before effortlessly breaking his body.

3) The Calling CardBatman Begins

“I never said thank you.” – Jim Gordon
“And you'll never have to.” – Batman

Batman Begins exceeded all expectations of it at the time of its release. Able to atone for Schumacher’s sins at the same time as creating a fantastic origin story, it must go down as one of the most successful reboots ever. Ultimately though, Nolan managed top all of this with a single scene – capturing the selfless heroism of his protagonist, while foreshadowing the much-anticipated appearance of his archenemy.

2) The Joker's InterrogationThe Dark Knight

“See, I’m not a monster. I’m just ahead of the curve.” – The Joker

Wow. I’ll forgive you for wondering why this scene isn’t number one. Tortured hero Vs. chaotic villain. It rarely gets any better than this. This is arguably the scene that won Heath Ledger his Oscar – and boy, is it a masterful performance from the late acting legend. Like his character says, despite all of Batman’s physicality and threats, there’s only one person in control here – and that’s The Joker.

1) The Hero Gotham DeservesThe Dark Knight

“So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.” – Jim Gordon

That said, it is this scene that is, without a doubt, my favourite moment from the whole trilogy – and potentially my favourite cinematic moment ever. It’s that good. From Hans Zimmer’s pulsating score, to Wally Pfister’s magnificent cinematography, to Jim Gordon’s excellent speech – nothing tops this. I’ll never forget how awestruck I was watching this movie in cinemas for the first time. This is why I love movies.

So there you have it folks! My ten favourite moments from The Dark Knight Trilogy. Do you agree with them, or have you got any other favourite moments? I'd love to know what you guys think in the comments. If you liked this as well then hit the big red thumbs-up!

Thanks for reading! Oh, and here's the one moment Nolan's trilogy was truly missing...

Such an amazing list. The Dark Knight Trilogy is the best comic book film trilogy. There is literally so many amazing moments in each of the three films and you can sit through all three in one sitting.

Great editorial.

Good stuff man! The thing about The Dark Knight trilogy...I could come up with a dozen of these 'top 10 moments' lists, and I'm pretty sure it'd come out different every single time haha. There's just SO many stand-out moments and scenes in this trilogy. It's truly amazing. But the one constant I would have at #1 is the one you absolutely nailed: the ending shot of The Dark Knight. It was just the absolute perfect way to end that film, and I honestly would've been more than satisfied even without a 3rd film to finish the trilogy off.

Still, I'm glad to see plenty of moments from The Dark Knight Rises make your list! The Nolan brothers gave Bane some of the absolute best pieces of dialogue in the entire trilogy, the movie is filled to the brim with iconic and memorable moments, and it finishes off the trilogy completely full-circle. Awesome.

nice. so many fantastic moments in this incredible trilogy I wouldnt be able to do just 10. remember moments like
when he says "I dont have to save you" in begins to ras al ghul and floats out like a bat? or the first meeting between him and jim gordon? "im only one man" and batman replies "now were two" and disappears.or the joker disappearing pencil trick? or when they flip the truck in the dark knight? or when jokers hospital explosion fails and then works? its just great and amazing trilogy.

A well written article, but i don't agree with everything on this list, mainly bruce climbing out of the hole, i get what they were doing symbolically, but its not very "Dramatic" or "cool" to me, knowing that a small child escaped from the pit earlier with what seemed much more ease then BATMAN!!!.

Sorry, as you can tell im not a fan of rises.

Great films. No matter how many times they reboot Batman, this trilogy will stand out as defining portrayals of the characters in the Batman universe. Not only were they great films on their own right, but there was just so much from the comics that was cleverly and seamlessly worked into the films.

3rd movie is monumental shit. so much unreal realism that its insulting to intelligent audiences. there is just to much to bitch about with tdkr.
ruined the legecy of the other 2 decent, but unrealistic movies.

@MightyZeus - Cheers bro, glad you enjoyed it. I agree, have done the marathon once before - enjoyed it so much!

@Doopie - Thanks man, really appreciate it! Yeah man I loved that scene, best moment of TDKR for me, and definitely one of the most shocking moments of the trilogy.

@PAF - Haha that was arguably the worst piece of acting in the whole trilogy. Really detracted from the character.

@GliderMan - Totes Ma Gotes indeed bro :P Need to watch that film again

@SauronsBANE - Cheers as always man! Good to see some support for Rises too! I love how you stick to your views no matter what popular opinion on this site is. It may be my least favourite of the two, but I still rank it as one of the best CBMs ever. And as for #1, glad you agree. I love that scene so much!

@Mrcool210 - Thanks man, I appreciate that. I'm glad even though you disagree you state your differences in a reasonable way. I respect your opinion, and thanks for the support!

@JediPhilosopher - I agree, there's so much more that can be done with Bats. I love Nolan as a director, but I think Scott Snyder's trilogy: Court Of Owls, City Of Owls, Death Of The Family could top him if adapted properly.

@MrDonut - Cheers man. Haha I almost added that one. Loved angry Batman :D

@tonytony - Thanks bud, yeah I agreee, there's almost too many great moments.

@CookieKid247 - Thanks man, good again to see some support for Rises. Glad you stand up for it too :)

@DrunkenNukem - Agreed, 100% Underrated by pretentious critics (and maybe a little overrated by us CBM fans - but its still awesome)

@GuardianAngel - Yeah man, there was a great blend of source material and original input from Nolan

To a few of you guys though, @Dingbat is kinda right. I mean, it's okay to hate on movies when they're terrible - I dislike the F4 films and Superman Returns. But I reckon the large majority of people appreciate how good these movies are - even if they may have been disappointed with Rises. But I guess that's you're opinion.

One thing I don't like is some people hatin on DC movies just cause they are DC movies (and the same with Marvel movies). Personally, I prefer Marvel movies on the whole - but I can appreciate a well made DC or FOX film when I see one (e.g. this trilogy, X-Men: First Class), as well as a Marvel dud (e.g. Iron Man 2).

Don't let allegiances sway you guys. At the end of the day, these aren't sports teams - they're just movies! :)

@Minty Good article. The 'Group Therapy' scene pretty much topped any TDKR scenes in your 'top 10' but #1 and 2 were certainly film quality gold.

Not a fan of the average TDKR but I miss me some Nolan Bats that's for sure!

My sentiments exactly. I would hope that they're just trolling to get a rise out of people and not because they actually believe their own shit, although I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

Would have dropped 'Rachel finds out' for 'Ra's Trains Bruce.' Batman Begins tells the best origin story of any superhero movie.

I might have also had TDK's opening Bank Heist. Phenomenal.

@Minty
Please, please, PLEASE do one for the X-Men franchise next! These are great!

TDKR- was bad. I'm not hating, but my opinion remains the same. TERRIBLE FIGHT SCENES (I've seen more believable punches on Gunsmoke), impossible to understand dialogue at times, from both Bane & Batman, and the absence of the Joker is an inexcusable elephant in the room. I know Heath passed, I still get sad thinking about it, but to not even give the Joker a nod is wose than replacing the character. My two cents...
marvel72

pretty decent list i guess, for me the best moments were.

-"back up" batman begins
-"batman's first night out" batman begins
-"the tumbler police chase" batman begins
-"scarecrow fears batman" batman begins
-"the joker playing card" batman begins

-"magic trick" the dark knight
-"the truck flip" the dark knight
-"interrogation" the dark knight

-"police chase batman" the dark knight rises
-"breaking of the bat" the dark knight rises

not much from the dark knight rises was really that great.

You could say the same thing about every MCU movie not called Iron Man, The Avengers, Cap 2 or Guardians.
