Todd Phillips' Joker Movie To Start Production In September; Will Be Largely Filmed In New York City

Yes, DC may be announcing films left and right, but it seems as though Todd Phillips’ Joker is really coming into fruition. Though not within DCEU continuity, the film is expected to star Joaquin Phoenix.

News has already broke that Warner Bros. wanted the Joker film to be in front of cameras before the end of the year. What we didn't know was the fact that the film is expected to start production in September, according to Omega Underground. The Joker film, which will be directed by The Hangover Trilogy's Todd Phillips, will also be produced by Martin Scorsese.

Rumored to be set in 1980's Gotham City, with New York as its stand in, the film will aim to match the tones of Raging Bull and Taxi Driver, two works of which Scorsese directed in the past.

The projected start date of production implies that the film will be released in theaters next year. It is likely that the film will debut in either the late summer or early fall. If Warner Bros. is confident enough in the material it is possible that they may push Joaquin Phoenix's performance during award season. Having Scorsese taking the reins as a producer is a good move strategically when aiming for voters' attention. With a mid-range budget that is far below any of DC's recent endeavors, expect the film to be a full-blown character study on the iconic villain.

Hopefully it’s a dark scary tale!

This could actually be very fascinating, especially if it’s a character piece. The Joker is the greatest villain of all time imo, and his origin, as he always puts it, it basically whatever we think it should be, multiple choice if you will. So that definitely gives the film makers a lot of room to play with, which I’m curious to see!

@Mattygrand - that's the problem though. This will make it set in stone. The mystique will be gone and that unpredictable nature will also fall away with it.

@RancidBane - so basically what The Killing Joke and Tim Burton’s Batman tried to do right? His origin as always be depicted differently, in the comics themselves, movies including this one, TV, video games. What you’re worried about has already been done and everything you fear will be lost has always still been there.

@Mattygrand - killing joke isnt can on, nickleson's joker is the least intimidating joker to date, and making a feature length film about this character will be setting a story in stone. It isnt the same unless they make this new branch of DC films titled Elseworld or Noncannon.

@Kevwebsz - Would that be so bad?

@Curmudgeon - I can't say anything until we have more info but we already seen the Joker in a crime movie and that was great.

@Kevwebsz - That's because it was also a Batman movie.

Is this the one Martin Scorcese is attached to or the Jared Leto one???

@MrCamw1 - it is this one. I'm just not sure we need this

@Curmudgeon - a simple yes or no would have done fine like the guy before you. No need to be a wise guy about it. Also nothing in the article says hes involved. Just says it matches the tone of his films.

@MrCamw1 - Did they add more to the article after you posted this? Because the last sentence of the first paragraph states that’s Scorsese is the producer. Also, Jared Leto is not mentioned in the article, but Jaquin Phoenix is, and his picture is in the acrticle.

Why would you not just read the article? Wouldn’t it take less time than typing a comment and then expect others to do your reading for you and hope they respond?

This is very confusing.

This is just a film we don't need. The mystique that surrounds the Joker is part of what makes him so intimidating. We don't need his back story. Without Batman the Joker is just another maniac. He needs his yin to his yang to complete him. This just wont have that whole feeling to the character.
