Reliable news regarding Christopher Nolan's followup to The Dark Knight has come short lately. And finishing up with Inception, Nolan can now get things started with the Dark Knight's return. Involving the villain, there have been repeated rumors of Inception actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt portraying the prince of puzzles, Riddler. And today according to FirstShowing...

" We've gotten word from a reliable inside source with a studio casting grid that The Riddler is listed as a character for Chris Nolan's highly anticipated to the sequel to The Dark Knight, which is still called Batman 3 at Warner Bros. Even more interesting, the actor currently listed in the same grid to play the assumed villain is none other than Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

And by the way, a casting grid is used in the industry to keep production companies, agencies, etc. in the loop on a project's progress and the roles available for actors to potentially take. These documents are used for business planning in the industry and by no means would use internet speculation to list a character that may not even appear in the film. But when it comes to listing actors, this is info that can change at anytime, and just because an actor or studio is interested in one or the other, does not mean it will actually happen.

FirstShowing continues...We'd like to point out that this news should be considered confirmation that The Riddler is the villain in Batman 3 and less confirmation of the recent suggestions/rumors regarding Gordon-Levitt's casting as the enigmatic villain.

With Levitt laughing off The Riddler rumors in recent Inception interview, you can take this with a grain of salt..for now. But whether it's true or not, the Dark Knight returns in theaters July 20, 2012, with a rumored April start-date.

I like JGL quite a bit, but I'm not thrilled to see Riddler. Hopefully this is just rumor.

I'd like this, but I'm pretty sure someone is making this up. Look at all the facts:
Inception just came out. It's getting a lot of hype. JGL is in it. Nolan is known to work with the same acotrs. Everybody wants to know about Batman 3. The Riddler is a fan favorite and has long been rumored to be the next villain.
This rumor practically creates itself. it's believable so it sounds semi-credible, but until there's an official press release, this is BS.

The Riddle in a Saw style would fit the Dark knight version of Batman well.

catwoman played by marion cotillard wud be great, but nolan doesn't want that or the penguin. sad day, cus both r easy to do

i think the reason for joesph gordon levitt laughing off the rumor is cus he is the riddler. a computer terrorist is terrific idea for the riddler, but i want andy serkis. too bad he can't cus of his schedule.
black mask needs to be al pacino robert de niro leonardo decaprio or bring back joe pesci from retirement

Makes sense that the Riddler would be involved in the next installment as we left Batman being hunted down by the Gotham police. The Riddler will probably be connected to Mr. Reese (Mysteries), as some have suggested, and gain the knowledge of Batman's identity to "aide" the police in the hunt.

I'm not 100% sold on Levitt as a leading villain, but I would by no means dismiss him for the role.

I also agree with the notion of introducing a villain that can go toe-to-toe with Batman ... Regardless, two years is a long ways away.

Still keeping my fingers crossed for Black Mask.

My reasoning: It follows the theme. Batman takes on the mob, mob brings in a Freak (Joker) to take out a freak (Batman), Freak supplants the mob, Freaks form their own mob.

Two "Freak" characters have run the mobs of Gotham in recent years; Penguin and Black Mask. Penguin has had screen time in Batman Returns, Black Mask is a fresh face. I'd rather see a villain we and the average audience have never seen than rehashing a character we've seen before.

Whether that is Nolan's view or not; who the hell knows. Maybe they’ll throw us a bone at ComicCon.

@Hima pls no johnny depp that guys is in more movies in one year then jim carrey, eddie murphy, harrison ford, mel gibson, and bruce willis where in thier primes. hell might as well cast him to play lara croft, wonder woman, superman, flash, flash gordon, dick tracy, peter parker all the member of atari force for thier movies as well. hell for that matter have tim burton direct them all as well since they seem to be joined at the hip.

not that i dislike depp. i'm just tired of the oh he was good in this movie now lets all cast him to be the main in our movie ie russel crow, sam worthington, samuel jackson ect ect ect. time for some new blood.

I say the Riddler could be bad ass with the right actor. And villain wise, i say The Riddler lead a team of "freaks" inspired by the Joker in attempt to take over Gotham in a way.

He's one of the greatest actors of this generation. His film 'The Lookout' is one of the best acted films I've ever seen from a cast as a whole... I think this is great news if it does hold any water. If Nolan was up for recasting, JGL would make an awesome Joker - especially considering his resemblance to Heath.

I'd love to see Nolan portray the Riddler like the Zodiac killer. Make him more of a behind-the-scenes presence - give Bats a chance to explore his detective skills on film. Have the Riddler taunting rhe police, making threats and leaving a trail of clues tying into a much greater scheme... That's what I wanna see :)

The Riddler in the comics is a pretty good character. I think people that dont like the Riddler just know him from the old Adam West show or Batman TAS. He is not as silly in the comic and with the Riddler we could finally see Batman's Detective skills in a movie which most true Batman fans want. Another good incarnation of the Riddler was in "The Batman" cartoon show where he was a really dark character.

I can't believe people think the Riddler is sillier then the Penguin. The Penguin is one of the most uninteresting Batman villains ever. I do like Black Mask though but not as the main villain.

It doesn't make any sense. It really doesn't. Think about the [frick]ing plot at the end of TDK, how would Riddler fit into it? A Joker copycat? That would be so lame.

Does anyone besides me always feel freaked out by how much JGL resembles Heathe Ledger it is ridiculous.
Anyway, I would not mind JGL tackle Riddler. He is a great actor. To me he was the highlight of G.I. Joke. Inception was sooooo goood!!!!!!

first off, i think the joker MUST be in Batman 3. You absolutely can NOT finish the series without him! it just wouldn't work! who better to play him than JGL? 1. he looks very similar to Heath. 2. he's a phenomenal, talented actor! i still can't get over the fact Nolan doesn't want him to be in it whatsoever! and also, is it just me or is everyone on this site that says the joker and the riddler are basically the same character are just complete [frick]ing morons? they are COMPLETELY different characters! Joker is complete chaos, Riddler is obsessed with puzzles. apparently no one reads comics anymore because there are even more differences, the joker is a psycopathic murderer, the riddler doesn't murder hardly EVER. he just commits crimes to enlarge his already monstrous ego. there are so many ways to portray the riddler, he could be helping the cops track down Bats and then flips and becomes the villain, or he could be toying with them all from the beginning. Come on people, read a comic. They are completely different
