Christopher Nolan Drew Inspiration From The LOTR Trilogy When Making THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

In order to finish his own trilogy, the director says that he looked to another one - widely regarded as one of, if not the best trilogies of all time, Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings..

Christopher Nolan approached the idea of making another Batman movie with caution. In their latest issue, the director tells EW that the entire process was "tricky", and that his apprehension stemmed from the fact that there are very few great third parts of a movie trilogy - "There are very few very great third films. I think in some cases dissatisfaction with third films comes from the sheer exhaustion of the people making it.". But he then admits that it was Peter Jackson's epic achievement with the Lord Of The Rings trilogy that inspired him to carry on and finish the story he started with Batman Begins.

"I will cop to this: 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy was in the back of our minds the entire time we were making these. What Peter Jackson did was completely different. He had the whole story for all three films; he was physically capable of shooting it all at once. I can't imagine doing it myself. It's one of the great achievements in movies."

Indeed it is. And hopefully after this Friday Nolan's Batman trilogy will be held to the same regard. For more head on over to The Playlist, who have transcribed a few more interesting nuggets from the mag.

Agreed. For all three Lord of the Rings movies to be filmed at once required amazing commitment, determination and organization. At least they never had to worry about actors not being available and recasting.

I wonder if three movies made at once will ever be done again?

4 days to The Dark Knight Rises for me! Countdown is on!

I love Nolan but I can't stand the LOTR films. I am going to side with Kevin Smith.

@SirWinsalot - I confirm your comment.

Well, what I think he means is that the story of LOTR was pretty much ready for him. Also, filming those back to back must have been tough. I remember when Fellowship came out, I was still a kid. I was nearly graduating from High School when Return of the King released lol

Can't wait for TDKR. It's gonna be one of the best movies of all time

@asterisk Thanks. i was always on the fence with Smith. Not quite sure I liked him, never really saw the appeal of him. After that video I am now 100% sure I do not like him.

I love it when great artist, cause that is what he is, lets their ego and personal achievement go to give credit to another artist. My Nolan respect count just went up...

PuyGuy, just stfu and go away.

If TDKR delivers, this trilogy will easily top LOTR for me. LOTR is a good series, but the movies aren't that great as stand alone experiences. Batman Begins and TDK manage to compliment each other while remaining quality experiences if viewed as stand alone movies. Fingers crossed that TDKR keeps up the trend.

Peter Jackon > nolan

there's NOTHING compared to LOTR trilogy !!!

star wars is second to that, (the first 3)
then The Godfather,
then the first 3 Indiana Jones then
then The Bourne trilogy and
then Toy Story, yes a kids movie !

those are the best trilogies out there !
we will wait and see about tkdr....

I remember I thought Lord Of The Rings was boring when I was about 7 or 8 and then my parents were watching the scene when Aragorn took on all the Ring Raiths.. and then I had to see it from the beginning and fell in love with that series. Best Trilogy out there. Star Wars being second. And Dark Knight Rises might take 3rd.

Very Awesome stuff dudes. Peter Jackson and C Nolan Deffinetly have the passion for making kick ass movies. I remember watching some thing where Jackson was tryin to pitch his vision/idea for lord of the rings and studios turning him away. What a badass. He wanted to do two films but the studio that finally made it happen was down to let him make three.

So stoked for The Dark Knight Rises

One of best triologies of all times most likely

Jesus there's still people who think George Lucas actually had a story planned for those ridiculous Star Wars films. Some of you really need to read about how those films were made then you'd be surprised how make-it-up-as-you-go they were and why there's sop much narrative holes in the entire series.

Not set of movies comes close to what Peter Jackson achieved with LOTR, the sheer commitment and devotion of the cast and crew over that five year production is there to see on the screen. Best made Trilogy by a mile and then some.

Then Bourne, then The Godfather, then The Matrix Trilogy, The Man With No Name, Then The To Story Trilogy.

A TALE OF CITIES & LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy : when the INSPIRATION is Genuine & Right, then EVERYTHING WORKS OUT WELL.

I think NOLAN's understanding that Usually 3rd movie sucks, & then taking inspiration from right placed WILL surely help him in TDKR: this movie will be AWESOME!!
