Can Eisenberg pull off Luthor?

Five Reasons the "haters" may be right...

For Batman vs Superman, Jesse Eisenberg has been cast as the iconic supervillain Lex Luthor. It was always going to be a big deal whoever got the role, but in particular, there are certain expectations that come with playing Superman’s arch nemesis. Forgive me, but I’m gonna naysay a little bit here. From Ben Affleck to Gal Gadot, He's going up against the World's Finest heroes, and it makes me wonder if he's up to the task. Thought it might be therapeutic to work out my misgivings in an article, so join me, as I try to figure out why I think this is so…odd…

He’s the same in everything. One of my first questions about this big casting news is, can he even do anything different from what I always see? Jesse Eisenberg is the dorky weirdo. And it’s not even a trait he can call his own. In fact, early in his career, many casual movie goers often mistook him for Michael Cera. It’s an easy mistake- not that they look alike, but they are both skinny ‘snarky’ type guys who play skinny, ‘snarky’ type characters. These guys are quick-witted, sharp-tounged, masters of mumblecore. They also both star in mostly lighter films. It makes me wonder about his range, and if he has the chops to go outside the box. This leads me to my next, very similar point…

Can anyone guess which of his movies this is from?

He plays a “type.” You know the type I’m talking about. The dweeby little bitch. The smart-ass. The question becomes, Is that the type of Lex Luthor they want to create? It could be entirely possible, if this is the route they want to go. A contemporary comment on some of the young people of high status in our socio-economic today. Jesse could pull off a genius quite easily. But isn’t there more to Luthor than his brains? I mean, this could be interesting, but wasn't Man of Steel trying so hard to establish the status quo by the end of the film? Meaning things are finally getting familiar to Superman fans. Why throw that off again, by having Kal-El face off on a possibly hipster take on Lex Luthor?

Spider-Man towering over Luthor in The Facebook Movie

He was not a villain in the Social Network. At worst, he was kind of a jerk and he screwed over his friend. This is not what a villain is. He's just a flawed, human person. After watching that movie, nobody said, “That was some straight Lex Luthor, shit right there!” There is no true malice in his Mark Zuckerberg character, nor did he take pleasure in making other people suffer. These are the types of things we’ll need to see from Luthor, and I don’t doubt that he can try to do that, but I wanted to address this very common defense that has been circulating the casting, and I want to debunk it right here and now.

A movie is only as good as its villain. I can’t stress this enough. The antagonist of a superhero movie is what separates the great CBMs from the mediocre. It’s why we remember someone like Magneto, and why we don’t remember whoever was in Thor 2. A great bad guy makes the action and the stakes all the more exciting, and few could argue it gets more important than Lex Luthor in a Superman movie. As one of the most well-known, and formidable foes of all time, Man of Steel 2 needs to offer something on the level of Dr. Octopus or Joker- someone worthy of our hero’s time. Can Jesse Eisenberg be that guy? We don’t need another Red Skull (great villain that was completely wasted).

His most recent appearance was on TV- just a few weeks ago. Not the most imposing screen presence...

He’s “too young”. That’s the immediate complaint, and at 30 years old (the same as Henry Cavill) the fact that it is still an issue anyway speaks for itself. Can Jesse stand against his co-stars? When I picture Cavill (or Ben Affleck for that matter) standing-off, face to face with Jesse, I can't help but think it just seems laughable. If age ain't nothin’ but a number, then the issue is, Eisenberg still feels very boy-ish, compared to what we’ve seen from this role in the past, and now we're back in that trap that befell Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth in Superman Returns. The roles are essentially going to kids, (see: the Fantastic Four reboot) and you're asking a lot of the audience to buy these people in their parts. It will feel less like Superman vs. the most powerful man in Metropolis, and more like Superman vs. a spoiled rich kid who doesn't like him very much.

Don't get me wrong. I've enjoyed Jesse Eisenberg in literally everything I've seen him in. But he's just not what comes to mind when I think of Lex Luthor, who is so imposing and intimidating. I liken this casting to Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum, who I was also familiar with as a comedy guy. Of course Rosenbaum has gone on to be the best incarnation of Luthor ever, in my opinion, but the difference is he was supposed to be young, playing opposite an also young Clark Kent. It’s really hard for me to reconcile Eisenberg’s inherent boyishness being so powerful in this movie.

As someone who loved Man of Steel, WB/DC is testing my good faith. One after another with these (insane) announcements, and it's hard to keep a positive attitude. I'm not freaking out (after all, we haven’t seen anything yet), but just expressing a gut reaction to the news, as I’m sure we all are.

yes I kinda agree I think this is like Topher Grace in spider-man 3 for me. now i know man of steel 2 wont be anything near that i hope not but its like you have these intimidating villains in the comic but are the exact opposite in the movie lol. I think he might surprise us but I share fans concerns

But honestly I think this is WB/DC way to make the world more set in "reality". I heard a good discussion on would WB include Greek Gods in the universe with wonder woman since its so based in the real world.

Never in a million years while I was watching Man of steel and seeing all the Lex Corp easter eggs that Lex would be Jesse Eisenberg lol

I don't think he plays a dorky weirdo he plays a dorky douchebag which from I have seen of him in interviews and just how he presents himself is a pretty spot on assumption of him. So maybe that is the kind of Luthor they want a dorky skinny douchebag then I say Eisenberg is perfect couldn't have found a better actor.

I'm not sold on this casting at all. I know I'm pulling the whole "judging a person before I see their performance", but the dude does not fit the role... at all. Bryan Cranston would have been perfect - especially since they casted an older Batman. It would have been cool to have an older Lex Luthor.

He can play different roles and I bet you haven't seen double, where he plays two opposite characters. They are completely different and might surprise you. I think we all are thinking of him trying to portray the Lex from the comics when he won't.

David Goyer and Zack Snyder have come up with a new type of Lex that we haven't seen before. Honestly I don't give an honest crap about his hair because Lex isn't defined by his head, and I think there being an event in the film where he loses his hair, causing him to hate superman/batman or even wonder woman even more.

He actually is a good actor, but is one that goes after the same roles type of multiple times. And about him facing off against Batman & Superman, Lex Luthor always uses some type of suit anyway.

I think Eisenberg is going to surprise us with his performance- he has to know there is going to be a lot of pressure to deliver. Besides Cavill as Superman, every other casting choice has been met with criticism- Fishburne as White; Adams as Lois; Affleck as Batman; Gadot as WW.

While I wasnt a fan of a few of those choices, I have opted to wait and see, hoping that we get the DC movie we have been waiting for.

@soto You ever see Chaplin should have won best actor at the oscars that year but Pacino got it for a life time achievement award.

@Redhood

Sure Luthor uses a suit but he is still an imposing man to normal people both physically and mentally.

All good points.

Jesse is a great actor, but his Lex Luthor will necessarily be different from what Lex is like in the comics and previous incarnations. He just can't pull off being intimidating, specially when standing in front of Superman and Batman, with his tiny figure and whiny voice, which is why I think we won't be standing in front of them.

The only way I see him working as a scary Lex is if he's crippled or wheelchair bound, so that his brain is literally all he has to intimidate people. That would also make him the exact opposite of Clark.

This version of Lex seems to be inspired by Zuckerberg/Snowden because WB has decided that that's what a generation of selfie-taking beliebers deserves. That kind of Lex might be annoying as shit, but not intimidating.

If they make him a little freaky/handicapped, however, that might work. Plus Eisenberg could probably pull that off quite well.

The thing is, Lex doesn't need to be physically intimidating. I mean, his enemy is Superman, who could make even the toughest looking human his bitch with both hands tied behind his back. I assume they're going with a more intelligent Lex, one who is Superman's complete opposite (mind over muscle). I think his role as Mark Zuckerberg is the main inspiration for his casting, and that his version of Lex will be like a sinister version of Zuckerberg who wears expensive suits and has some strange complex where he needs to be loved by everyone, with an abnormal amount of jealousy towards Supes.

Plus, I'm assuming they'll have Lex be a guy the public likes in the movie, so Eisenberg's kind of a good choice. In fact, I get the feeling that when he 'loses' at the end, it'll be in the sense that the public see his true colours, he loses his popularity, begins to have some kind of breakdown beginning his obsession with Superman - his baldness may even be stress induced.

I'm still iffy about his casting, but there is definitely potential for a great re-imagining of the character. I'm just not sure they'll get it right.

@AC1

The thing is Lex has always seen himself as the pinnacle of humanity the best humanity has ever made so he is physically , intellectually, and financially intimidating and that is the way he wants it. That is why he hates Superman so much because Superman is this god amongst men that no matter what he does is still far superior to him.

@OldGreg

For wackier Silver Age Lex Luthor yes completely different Luthor then the one today. Lex Luthor wasn't what he is like today.

For me it's all about the aura projected on screen, and how much I can believe it. Imo, we've never had an intimidating Lex Luthor in the movies, and I wonder why they can't get that right.

@OldGreg:
I actually think Gene Hackman wasn't a great choice for Lex Luthor. Great actor, very funny, but in the movies he was more like an annoying car salesman.

minusman has a point about all the casting Zack Snyder has done, going back to Amy Adams and "Jenny" Olsen. (I had no problem with Laurence Fishburn because he's approaching Morgan Freeman territory with me- where I just want him to be the head honcho in everything!) Z-Sny is going in another direction, and it's hard to even know what he's got planned until we see it.

Pedrito made a pretty compelling case. I would honestly be VERY interested in some sort of physically inferior, over-compensating, mad genius take on Luthor. Because, as I think about it, it's not like I've loved the Kevin Spacey or Gene Hackman takes either. A straight up evil business man would be boring, and has been done to death. If they can find some way to make their Luthor incredibly unique but something to be feared.

In other words, it's so crazy it just might work

Oh, man! Eisenberg would have been a GREAT Jimmy Olsen! My pal!

What's interesting about the gadgets thing-if they do that- is that it could totally work for Toy Man.
