Darren Aronofsky's BATMAN: YEAR ONE Movie Was Too Dark... Even For Frank Miller

The Dark Knight Returns writer says the Year One screenplay he worked on with Darren Aronofsky featured a ruthless, sadistic Batman that caused the studio to run for the hills. Click on for more...

Before Christopher Nolan reinvented the Dark Knight with Batman Begins, director Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For A Dream, The Wrestler) had planned to helm a loose big-screen adaptation of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One. The pair completed a screenplay but frequently butted heads about the iteration of the Caped Crusader each wanted to use.

Apparently Aronofsky's take was far too dark - even for the man credited with giving us the most ruthless, gritty Batman to date. Here's what Miller had to say about what ultimately led to the project being cancelled during an interview with THR.

“It was the first time I worked on a Batman project with somebody whose vision of Batman was darker than mine. My Batman was too nice for him. We would argue about it, and I’d say, “Batman wouldn’t do that, he wouldn’t torture anybody,” and so on. We hashed out a screenplay, and we were wonderfully compensated, but then Warner Bros. read it and said, “We don’t want to make this movie.” The executive wanted to do a Batman he could take his kids to. And this wasn’t that. It didn’t have the toys in it.”

We've previously heard some very odd things about Aronofsky's depiction of the iconic DC character and where he hung his cape, and Miller confirms those "homeless Batman" stories.

“The Batmobile was just a tricked-out car. And Batman turned his back on his fortune to live a street life so he could know what people were going through. He built his own Batcave in an abandoned part of the subway. And he created Batman out of whole cloth to fight crime and a corrupt police force.”

To be fair, this does sound quite interesting, and would probably make a great non-canon animated feature or one-off graphic novel - but something tells me audiences wouldn't respond very well if that was the Batman that greeted them up on the big screen. What do you guys think?

At least we would have gotten ANOTHER "death of Batman's parents" scene

There is only been 639 different times it's been shown. What's one more?

Its been a while since I read year one, I think one of my favorite batman interrogation scenes ever was in there. It involved a shard of glass but it was more psychological.

Glad they didn't go this route. Batman shouldn't be sadistic. I'm really not even a fan of The Dark Knight Returns take on Batman but I do like year one. Wish Batman Begins would have stuck more closely to year one.

Sounds like something that would be interesting to explore with a completely original character, like I never understood the weird reinterpretations of established heroes. I get the necessary modernizing, but with all the changing genders or sexualities, races going on with comics and movies... people try to do something so drastic that in most cases it doesn't even remain the same character anymore. Sometimes I wish that the comics didn't have this weird timeline where everyone barely ages, that there'd be newer heroes and creators could build diversity that way instead of just rebooting something in another direction over and over again. It'd even help the movies a lot, with actors aging and dying, they could go with the James Bond route but at some point, not now... I'm going to get tired of my favorite heroes because nobody wants to make new ones.

@BabyGroot - But most of the new ones are copies of what came before . Either they lost their parents early , were sent from a distant or dying planet , came across a ring or some power source that selected them for some reason etc etc . It's difficult to make a new hero let alone have one stand the test of time . But I agree we need more heroes .

@MagnusShadowX - it's not like Batman doesn't have his roots in characters like the Shadow and other pulp heroes. It's less about being completely original and more about coming up with variations on a theme for the current times.

Honestly, I agree with BabyGroot as well, and I think that is advice that the major comics companies should take... New concepts are very rare from them, and very tortured to find a completely new niche. Screw that. The "Shazam" version of Captain Marvel was created to be like Superman (to the point that he was sued out of existence), and yet he eclipsed Superman's popularity back in his heyday. Go on Marvel and DC, make new characters that are variations on existing ones, such as a female warrior god, but you don't have to make her "Thor". Make a homeless guy who becomes Batman without ever naming him Batman.

Of course, the real problem these days is that nobody who is established at all wants to make new characters that they themselves don't own the rights to, hence the creative drought at the major publishers.

@MagnusShadowX - yeah, i wish they'd stop using that same formula, but there's one character that really intrigued me that the writers did something similar to what i was commenting about. it's the new ms. marvel character, Kamala Khan and she's just a kid who looked up to the heroes and became a hero herself. her religion and culture was also an important factor for her character and it was just so refreshing to kinda have a unique perspective from a Pakistani-American teen.

here's a video (kinda long) that goes over her character

i get a lot of fans weren't too happy with her taking on the name of Ms Marvel but THIS is a great example of how to build diversity with new characters without changing any established characters. Carol Danvers even gave Kamala her blessing, and that's just cool. like there's even Batman Beyond that probably could've been the current Batman comic series in the new 52. i just hope that someday, we won't have to deal with the same bullshit where our favorite heroes are overused and they lose their uniqueness overtime.

@BabyGroot - I see the new Ms. Marvel as being a bit different from the female Thor or replacement Batmen or Captain Americas (Captains America?). I have no problem with bringing an old book title out of retirement and giving it to a new character... I understand the necessity of it under US trademark law (if you don't make use of a trademark every so often to meet the minimum requirements, you lose the rights to it. That's how Marvel picked up the lapsed "Captain Marvel" trademark name, after all.)

So there is a necessity there in trying out new characters with those names if the old characters are no longer around or popular enough to support the titles. That's obviously not the case when they decide to "shake up" a popular book by replacing the main character though.

The costume designs for this movie were fantastic. Throwback to the early noir-like Bob Kane designs. Wish the other movies picked up on some of those concepts.
