Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Reveals Why It's Taken This Long For NAMOR To Make MCU Debut

Rumours about Namor the Submariner's MCU debut started way back in 2010 when Captain America: The First Avenger was being shot, but why has it taken until Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for that to happen?

We're not sure how many of you will remember this, but when Captain America: The First Avenger was being shot, set photos finding their way online was a regular occurrence.

We got to see Chris Evans in action as Steve Rogers, chasing down the HYDRA operative who killed Abraham Erskine, though the movie being shot near the water led to speculation and rumours that moment would actually serve as the MCU debut of Namor the Submariner. After all, his comic book counterpart has a WWII history and...they were shooting by water!

Needless to say, the theories and rumours didn't pan out, and the King of Atlantis was neither an Invader nor Howling Commando in the 2011 movie. Ever since then, we've been waiting for Namor to make his presence felt, and it finally happens in this month's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

It's been a long wait, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has now explained why.

"Namor as the Marvel fans know, is of one, if not the original...and so that, forever, has been on our lists," he started. "I remember 18 years ago putting together, I think we even commissioned a script 18 years ago, and the timing was never right and the idea was never right."

"Ryan Coogler on the first movie starting pitching a war between kingdoms," Feige continued. "And if you actually added cultural specificity to Namor, and that's certainly what he's done in this movie, and it's not Atlantis it's Talocan and I can't wait for people to meet the Talocaneal and Namor."

We're definitely getting a very different take on Namor in the MCU, though that's exciting on a number of levels. With a new history, the anti-hero has been grounded in reality and promises to be more than just "Marvel's Aquaman." Based on early reactions, all signs point to the long wait for his live-action debut having been worth it.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrives in theaters on November 11.

This is a very interesting way to tell Namor's story and the Black Panther sequel actually I am looking to see if Marvel pulls it off within their universe.

There was also the Universal issue. But it's best to keep quiet about that until all the rights revert (which they probably haven't done yet since this is not a solo Sub-Mariner movie).

I have high hopes for this movie. I think skipping Love and Thunder and being more selective with Marvel content has really increased by hype levels. Ant-Man looks great to me as well.

@TheManWithoutFear - Same, I've been doing the same as well just being more selective on the Marvel content really. Still haven't seen Eternals but then again I don't really know well enough to care about them really.

@TheManWithoutFear - yeah, i think so much of what they make just feels like "content" now that the things where the creatives actually put effort into feels so much more special - this, werewolf by night, the gotg holiday special

@tmp3 - i'm sure that the teams working on every project put effort in and make the product that they are happy with. But not every project is going to suit all audience members.

I think, just like comics, the universe is big enough that you buy the titles that draw you in and accept that the others aren't for you. Even between ourselves, i don't like James Gunn and will likely skip the Guardians holiday special. Not because it's not a well made product but because i know i'm just not interested in Gunn's output. Horses for courses.

This looks like it will be a nice interpretation of Namor. Very much looking forward to it.

Unfortunately this is barely Namor

@DarthLaney - Namor or less.

@DarthLaney - Agreed. Why they think it’s good to screw with these amazing characters I can’t understand. Not once had they done so and the result is actually better.

@DarthLaney -
Yeah, I don't understand why they've done this to the characters. Its like they are ashamed of the original source material and feel the need to shove him into a Black Panther movie because they know if it was a solo movie he'd have no chance against the popularity of the first Aquaman film which he'd be compared to due to premise.

But Kevin I don’t want to meet the whatever they are, the Talicaneal, I wanted to meet the Atlantians. And no Josh it’s not exciting, it’s another massive letdown like the Mandarin…..

@Spike101 - You already met the Atlanteans in Aquaman.

So it is true that Universal lost Namor rights or is this like Hulk where he can show up in other projects?

If they hadn't leaned so heavily into the Aztec thing for Namor, they could have possibly done an Invaders movie set back in WW2. You had Cap and Bucky.. the Human Torch was on display at the Stark Expo.. and there's Namor.

But I don't think Namor as currently envisioned would really work.

Oh well.. wokeness again limits possibilities

@knomad - This is ironically an admittance of your own fairly limited imagination if you think Namor having Aztec roots prevents him from popping up in an "invaders" movie (the only things limiting Marvel from doing an Invaders movie are the facts that they have no interest in doing one and Chris Evans has moved on)
Spike101
Spike101 - 11/1/2022, 12:46 PM
@knomad - Give me a Invaders movie, what a great idea. Include the Howling Commandos, the Red Skull and a comic book accurate Zemo and it could be so good.

@Spike101 - Honestly want to see a comic-accurate Union Jack and Spitfire facing off against Baron Blood during 1950s London. Make it an another Halloween special.

Spike101 - 11/1/2022, 4:10 PM
@FilmGuy7878 - Great idea too. I’d love to see more of these legendary characters rather than some of the rubbish that’s been pushed out recently. Shot in the same tone and feel of the CA:TFA and a shoe like this could bd amazing.

I hope Namor is older than he looks and he and Steve crossed paths before during WWII

It's kinda weird that you never mentioned the Ironman 2 hint and went with the First Avenger rumor.
