Marvel Studios has presented interviews with the lead designers on key characters in Marvel's Avengers all week long. Previously we heard from Visual Supervisor, Charlie Wen on designing Thor and Loki. Today, we hear from artist, Andy Park who was responsible for the look of the S.H.I.E.L.D. characters, first up is Black Widow.

On the subtlety of Black Widow's costume that's actually more intricate upon close examination:
Andy Park: Since Widow appeared in “Iron Man 2,” we had to start from there. Widow was one they were pretty happy with, so they didn’t want to deviate too far from that. From there, I did versions where she was a little more armored up for heavy combat. In this film, she’s going into full-on combat, so I did versions with more armor. We also looked at the comics and her gauntlet is the most iconic thing, aside from the cat suit.

On designing Black Widow with the realization that Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk would probably be the standout characters:
Andy Park: When we designed all the characters we were always keeping the others in mind. But at the end of the day, we knew the ones that were going to stand out were Hulk, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man because they are the most fantastical, versus the ones I designed, which were more S.H.I.E.L.D.-based--Widow, Hawkeye and the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

We had to tread that line between [making sure] they fit into the Avengers roster, but at the same time, I knew that their costumes had to look like they were made by S.H.I.E.L.D. Theirs were the most muted, so it couldn’t be too super hero-ish. It was more utilitarian and practical, more military-style combat suits.

On designing the Widow's Gauntlets (which weren't used at all in the film):
Andy Park: I wanted the gauntlets to be more utilitarian, so I did try to make them look like they had some tech in them. The initial intent was to have the gauntlets more teched out, instead of just a fashion accessory.

I have the "art of' book, it was quite surprising to see all the concept art had her with long hair, it must have been a last minute decision to go with short.

Yep, she definitely did use those gauntlets, she was riding on the shoulders of a Chitauri and shocking him repeatedly, it was actually pretty awesome; do you research kid!

anne hathaway's catwoman had some sex appeal in her which scarlet jonnason's Black widow didnt have.... and over all most of the people agree with me.....

Scarlet looked great. But guess what? Widow is a character and not just meant to turn you on while you watch the avengers. amazing how shallow geeks are on this site, especially considering what their likely prospects are with women.

Damn fools...both Scarlet & Anne looked sexy in skin tight suits.
Who gives two shits who looked better just be happy those women slipped into those outfits.
Slipping out of them would be nice to see as well.

Cutting that gorgeous hair was the worst move for that character.

She wasnt there for the sex appeal. Which is good for her. No love interest there.

But her thighs and ass still as good as always. Unfortunately less boobage, tho.

I think I am one of the few who thought she looked better in the avengers. She was also an infinitely better character in the avengers than Iron man 2. Its I the writing. But the hair was a little iffy. Not sure it should have been quite that short

Wish she had of used her gantlets. Still very cool designs.

She used her gauntlet when one Chitauri grabbed her from behind - she melted his face off! How'd we miss that?

I'm guessing the short hair was easier to CGI - just a guess. Her hair in Iron Man 2 made her hotness multiply.

I didn't really care if Black Widow lived or died...

She was hot as hell in Iron Man 2.

Idk why she looked so different in Avengers:/
And I also noticed that her butt looks bigger than it really is because she has some lordosis going on

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced Mila Kunis would have been a better choice. She speaks fluent Russian, is beautiful, can act (I am on the fence about Scarlett's performance, she had some great scenes and some noticeably cringe worthy scenes), and did I mention she's Russian?

Marvel nailed ALL their casting choices, save for the woman IMO. Cobie Smulders was just god awful as Maria Hill, and Scarlett just doesn't scream Black Widdow to me. It seems to be a real flaw in comic book movies, the inability to cast women. I think Nolan nailed it with Catwoman, and Favereau nailed it with Pepper Pots, and Famke Janson wasn't a bad Jean, but other than them, seriously, name me a transcendent female in comic book movies? Seriously name one that has a strong presence on screen, equal to that of her male counterparts?

I forgot to add Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta, but I'm talking about more mainstream comic book movies.

natasha romanova aka black widow was/is way more hotter than selina kyle aka selina kyle.

But Selina Kyle aka The Cat was a much better character and much better acted than the throw away that was Natasha Romanova aka Black Widdow.

I wish she would've used the Widow's Gauntlets a LOT more in the Avengers.

Too much hate on Scarlett Johansson, and it is, frankly, sexist. Is it because she's a beautiful actress in Hollywood that she's got your magnifying glass focused on her? Is it because there are so few actresses to jump into the role of a badass female that you poke your nose up in the air and criticize any and everything about this one?

Doubters to her acting ability should watch Scoop. She can be just as funny and dorky as she can be stunning and serious.

PFFFFHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAA!

Hathaway looked better in the catsuit? Uhh, no. She has the body of a skinny, prepubescent boy. She is a WAY better actress. Yes. But Johansson has a sexier body without a shadow of doubt, unless you find the bodies of skinny, prepuscent boys arousing.

@ RidiculousFanBoyDemands

if you say so,she was only know as the cat on a newspaper headline, she wasn't even called the cat or catwoman once in the film.

never heard batman refer to her as the cat,you know like "the cat & i".
