Captain America Screenwriters Talk Baron Zemo, M.O.D.O.K. And More!

Captain America: The First Avenger screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely talk about not including Baron Zemo in the upcoming movie and which characters they're saving for future installments...

You just mentioned Batroc, and we've seen Arnim Zola in the "Captain America" trailer. You're taking some nice dives into Cap's supporting cast, it seems like...

McFEELY: Absolutely. There are some other ones that will go unnamed that didn't make the final shooting script, too.

MARKUS: It's painful because Cap had all of these great villains in World War II. Obviously, the guy no one's talking about because we're not using him in the film is Zemo. He's huge in the WWII story, but you eventually get to a point where there are too many elephants in the room.

McFEELY: You don't want too many villains. I think other movies have fallen short when there are too many villains. Particularly for the first one, you don't want to mess up the recipe — and the recipe is: the better your one main villain is, the better your hero is.

Plus, you probably want to save some of them for future films, right?

MARKUS: That's the one thing about this Marvel universe: it's so deep and been woven and rewoven so many times. The Howling Commandos, they're in the movie, and then you have this knowledge about who the characters become. Whether or not anything comes of it, you can say, "That's Union Jack right there," or, "That's Dum-Dum Dugan."

You brought up the Howling Commandos, and given Nicky Fury's connection with that team, a lot of people are wondering whether the Marvel movie version of Nick Fury can actually have a connection to the Howling Commandos now, given the timelines...

McFEELY: Yeah, we're going to have to kick that to Kevin Feige. [Laughs]

Okay, here's one I think you can answer: Will M.O.D.O.K. fans be pleasantly surprised by any cameos in the film? After all, he's intimately connected with HYDRA...

McFEELY: [Laughs] Let's hold him for the future...

Starring Chris Evans as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Tommy Lee Jones as Col. Chester Phillips, Stanley Tucci as Abraham Erskine and Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in 3D on July 22.

Falsworth is in the film as a Howling Commandi but not as Union Jack.

I'm genuinely gutted Zemo isn't in it. I understand why and think they made the right decision. Red Skull is badass enough on his own. But that (without hating) is one of my main disappointments.

@ Lucky: Nope you didn't miss it. It's just that Arnim Zola looks nothing like Arnim Zola.

In this movie he's just a Hydra scientist.

That is an interesting thought. The thought of how deep the MCU could possibly be or go. I mean, with the whole 'every movie released under marvel studios is in the same universe deal.' That pretty much means that any solo movies released in the future can in some effect others, whether it is a simple name drop, cameo, villain or hero to rise in the movie. Whatever happens could or could not very well be setting up for future movies, whether it is for the Avengers or other movies that we don't have a clue about.

@luckylu Zola is the guy standing next to Red Skull as he peels back his mask. He hasn't yet transferred his mind into a cybernetic body yet, but I feel like by the end of the flick we'll get some teases of his fate. Kinda like they did with Sterns/The Leader in The Incredible Hulk.

@Herosave - Agreed and that is why Marvel have chosen the best possible way to go about this.

Baron Zemo and Zola (with his cyborgbody) as the villains in the second movie!:) Save Baron Von Strucker for Nick Fury!

Althought i like Loki, i would like to see Hydra as the villain in The Avengers. Red Skull should comeback to lead it. That would be great!
It would be awesome to see them catch The Hulk and brainwash him against the other Avengers!

I have to say the AVENGERS: EMH cartoon has made me a big fan of Baron Zemo. He is such a total badass in that show. And I quote:

"Let the Skull have Bucky. Your life is MINE to take!"

However while I am disappointed he will not be in this movie I totally agree with the screenwriters. Keep your introductory movie tight and focused. One major villain and for thie first CA movie that absolutely has to be the Red Skull.

Hopefully sequels will get greenlit and we can see Baron Zemo in one of those.

It's doubtful we will ever see MODOK.

He has a high potential campiness factor and GL already have a similar character onscreen in Hector Hammond.

Anybody remember hearing about that Deathlok script that used MODOK as the villain? That was years ago, but it would be AWESOME.

Also, ditto to Coldblood6 on Zemo in the animated Avengers series.

As much as I want to see Zemo...especially as being the creator of whatever causes Cap's "death," I like the approach. First movie is hero's story with one villain = RED SKULL.

And....c'mon y'all....where's the love for Sasha "Borat" Cohen as Batroc the Leaper!??!?!

Sasha Cohen BARON, obviously.

I would love to see Baron Zemo but I agree with everyone else about sticking with one good villain. It'll be nice to him a future Cap flick. Never been a fan of MODOK. I always wanted to kick him in the face or his tiny nuts. Some Invader flashbacks in Cap 2 would be sweet though even though it doesn't seem like he'll get to have more than the one adventure during WWII.

MODOK would be kinda cool to see. Zemo would be EPIC!!! Have him for the second one, and give him a serum like they did in the animated series.

M.O.D.O.K. would be actually epic if they eliminated his comedic factor and made him much more frightening. I'd like to see him really emphasizing the "killing" part of his name.

They are screwed when it comes to Nick Fury. Nick should have been in the movie but they changed him.

I wish they had stuck with the original Nick Fury, because I would have loved to see a Nick Fury: Agent of Shield solo film that's set in the 60's and is all James Bond esque. That would be epic. That front cover of Fury in front of the black and white spiral always made me think of Austin Powers...but seriously though that would be awesome.
ManThing
ManThing - 3/30/2011, 4:50 PM
Yeah it's like they went the cheap, safe, and easy route in every way except Red Skull's head.

Everything else is plain and plausible. Arnim Zola is JUST a scientist.

Dum Dum Dugan and Union Jack are JUST soldiers. No Nick Fury in the Howling Commandos and no Invaders to speak of either even though we were told "The Invaders" were in it.

Anyway I still think the movie will be good. Just a bit... vanilla. Lacking in some of the panache it might have had.

What would work for having Fury connected to the Howling Commandos is if they turn Nick Fury into a title or codename, instead of just one person.
It would allow us to have the standard universe Nick Fury in Captain America, and when he dies, Sam Jackson becomes the new Nick Fury.
