In an interview with Advocate Magazine, the 35-year-old actor who auditioned for the role - which eventually went to Sunshine and Push star Chris Evans - would have been a dream come true.

"It's something I would've loved to do, especially for my six-year-old son, who would've thought it was the coolest thing in the world. The child within me really loved the idea of it too."

"There are very few things I'd get that excited about, but as an actor you have to move on. At some point I'd love to do something action-oriented like that because I've been in martial arts since I was eight."

Phillippe also said that he doesn't have a lot of time before he will "get too old" for such a role.

Captain America: The First Avenger is set to be released on July 22, 2011 and will star Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving and Hayley Atwell!

No shit you wanted the role. Everyone wanted the role, it's f*cking Captain America.

Hm, since he's into martial arts maybe he could be a good Danny Rand.

You're too short! Grow a little and you may have had a better chance. Plus he was over their desired age range.

too short? Oh, if only there were ways to make someone appear taller on the medium of television and cinema. If you could think of a way then you could sell that idea to Tom Cruise.

@Ranger14

how is Ryan Phillippe too short his only 1 inch shorter than Chris Evans who is playing Cap. plus Robert Downey Jr is shorter then Tony Stark in the comics. RDJ did wear shoe lifts in the movie.

I think he would of been great for the role, he certainly has the acting chops to pull it off and if he bulked up a bit he'd look the part too, oh well at least he's gracious about losing.

oh btw... if you feel like hearing my opinion on the new Spidey Reboot and feel like throwing your opinion up for all to see, check out my article:

For the record I think pimping articles is bad and rude to the writer who's article you're commenting on and I'm not gonna make a habit out of this. So yeah... now my ass is covered...

SoulAllFlush@ Pay attention to who they have cast in the Avengers and also the fact casting directors will always go with someone who fits the stature naturally and has the acting skills before they cast someone who doesn't have the stature and they have to fix it through technology. People have used that argument with Wonder Woman being cast and you can try to make a petite woman look taller through technology all you want, but what you really want is a woman how has the natural physique and stature of an Amazon. Same goes for Cap and other superheroes. Also, Tom Cruise's characters really don't rely on height and stature at all, as they typically aren't based on a character that has an imposing physical presence.

jazzman@ Chris Evans is listed at 6' 1/2" tall via most sources. Phillipes at 5'9". Tony Stark doesn't have to have a tall and physical presence as much because he wears the suit. His Tony Stark persona isn't made or broke on how big he is. Lifts or not, it really doesn't impact his character that much. For the muscular and physically imposing superheroes, I think it is a different deal. Adding 3-4 inches to a guy by adding lifts doesn't improve his overall physical stature, it just makes him taller on the bottom.

Would've been a much better Cap than [frick]ing Chris Evans!!!

But he would make an even better Danny Rand!!!! I'm glad to hear he's done some martial arts! He's one of my top picks along with Ryan Gosling, Scott Adkins, and Zach Levi. By now I'm more leaning toward Phillippe or Adkins for Danny.

I dont know enough about Phillipe to judge whether he would've been a good choice but in my opinion, he doesnt look right for the role. Besides, I'm more than happy with Chris Evans playing Cap! :)

Oh, and Scott Porter for Iron Fist!!!

@Ranger14

i remember some comic book fans complain that RDJ is too short to play Tony Stark. Chris Evans is taller than Ryan Phillippe but some people will still say Chris Evans aint tall enough to be Cap.

maybe Ryan Phillippe could play Hawkeye

I could really see Ryan playing Rand, And if he can fight like he has been doing martial arts since he was 8. Then he should have no problem doing the role.

Ryan Phillippe has been around and hasn't really done anything spectacular. Chris Evans is a better actor IMO.

This loser can go back to making his anti-American military movies. Never should of been close to the Cap movie in the first place.

Did any of the Evans haters watch the Ultimate Avenger animated movies?! IMO Cap not only looked like Evans but sounded like him as well (he even had elemts of the comedic delivery Evans has displayed in the past; such as the scene where he is first I troduced to Ant Man and the wasp)

Ryan Phillipe has enough natural dirtbag in him to be Pym but definately not Cap. I just rewatched the Rocketeer this weekend and I am genuinely excited about The First Avenger. Also, Ray Park for Ironfist!

Isn't posting something about Ryan Phillipe as relevant as posting something about Rosie O'Donnell? I don't get it.
I'm not enthusiastic about the Evan's pick, namely because he still has that pretty boy look about him. But it is miles above anything Phillipe would have brought to it.

Hmm. I am with ViperXX79 on this one, he would have placed a lot of his liberal bias' in the good Captain. I don't have anything against my fellow Americans, but hollywood is horrid at placing their slant in movies, either way right or left. I just want a good story when its all said and dome. :P

I found these two fun facts:
1. Christian Bale auditioned to play Robin in Batman Forever.
2. In the 1990 Captain America movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered for the role of Steve Rodgers/Captain America but did not get the part due to his accent

Starsapphire - those are some fun facts. And as far as the Governator as Cap. Maybe they should have done it. It was almost a comedy anyway. They should have just stuck with the parody and gone full throttle! "Ahh am Captawn Awmericaaa!!!" LOL!

Some other fun facts:
3. Heath Ledger was offered the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man but declined because he didn't want to risk being typecast as a super-hero
4. Anne Hathaway was one of the ladies in consideration for the role of Black Widow
5.In Iron man 2, the scene showing Vanko's collection of covers and articles about Tony Stark, there is one article about Iron Man stabilizing East and West relations that has the byline attributed to "Rob Downey" - an obvious reference to the starring actor.
