CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Concept Art Shows A Redesigned Version Of Cap's Suit From THE AVENGERS

Marvel Studios concept artist Ryan Meinerding has shared some unseen artwork from Captain America: The Winter Soldier showing a considerably cooler take on Steve's suit from Joss Whedon's The Avengers.

By JoshWilding - Jul 02, 2018 03:07 AM EST
Captain America's suit in The Avengers wasn't great and the helmet, in particular, looked really awkward. It's no wonder then that the Russo Brothers chose to go back to the drawing board when they took the helm of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, delivering a version of Steve Rogers' Super Soldier outfit which would inspire his appearance in the MCU in a significant way moving forward.

Now, some newly surfaced Captain America: The Winter Soldier shows an updated version of Steve's costume from The Avengers which is significantly better than what came before as it homages the suit designed by Agent Coulson in the superhero ensemble while adding a lot of much-needed upgrades.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. logo is a nice touch and it's good to see the star-spangled hero in a more tactical outfit after wearing one which was arguably too much like cosplay. Check out the new artwork in the Instagram post and then be sure to let us know your thoughts on the alternate design down below.

Not a bad suit at all.

That's a really cool design. I have to say, I kinda like that the Captain America suit from Avengers was bad, and Marvel kinda mocked it with Thor: The Dark World. It was designed by Coulson, right? Well he's a Cap fanboy and that's how I'd imagine a fanboy would design the suit. Could have looked better definitely, but how bad it was is pretty endearing.

@BlindWedjat - It wasn't too bad, really just the helmet/cowl made it look doofy. Once he lost it I thought it looked pretty good.

@FearTheLiving - 100% agree. Wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him in the cowl/helmet at all if/when they revisit the New York battle

@FearTheLiving - I actually liked it, I just would have tweakedtwo things to it...

1) I would give it a mask/helmet much like he ended up getting anyways, and

2)the other think I would have done is make the blue a slightly darker blue than what they went with...it just seemed to light.

IMO the design was solid and just needed a darker blue and a better helmet and it was good to go.

@FearTheLiving - I also may have made his belt brown or black to break up the blue, just as an added light touch.

An improved version of the Avengers 1 suit (though that isn't difficult to improve upon).

The avengers suit was not the main problem, it was that shocking rubber helmet and cowl combo!!!

The funny thing is that I think it’s the only time Marvel dropped the ball, yet Caps least popular outfit will now be in the most movies (Avengers, Thor TDW, Spider-Man Homecoming and Avengers 4)

@Unionjack - in the scenes where he didnt wear the cowl it looked pretty cool overall. But I gotta say, the concept art in the article looks better

Totally agree @MalseMarcel -

@Unionjack - Another problem was the flimsiness of the material used in the suit. Had they used something a little more substantial (like in the concept art for TA1), it may not have looked so cheap.

CBM.com logic:
1. Create instagram account
2. Follow concept artists
3. Repost said artists' artwork on CBM insta without crediting the artist
4. Use artwork as basis of article on CBM.com - promoting CBM insta
5. Only mention artists name once in summary text
6. ???
7. Profit

@obarium - yup that really does it for me... @NateBest and @JoshEilding I WILL NOT GO TO YOUR INSTAGRAM PAGE!!!

Pretty ridiculous and lazy to link the image to your social media.

Done with stupid lazy Wilding articles and fed up to the eyeballs with the state of the website.

@obarium @Trimount - Lazy to link the image to our social feed? If that's where it's posted, that's where it's linked/embedded from. Do you complain about Twitter, Facebook and YouTube embeds too? :)

I'm actually laughing that people are complaining about it not being credited when it's actually the second largest font on the entire page.
Images are credited when we can find the actual creator of the work. Sometimes it's not possible.

Go or don't go. Follow or don't follow. It's completely up to you. There is no right or wrong answer.

The Cowl was really the only thing about that suit that bothered me and he wore it for such a shot time it really wasn't an issue.

I honestly wish this was the design for his outfit in Avengers 1 instead of the rubber helmet pillow cloth combo

The only real problem with it was the weird neck piece and the ear covers, the rest was fine and as soon as he lost the mask it looked much less awkward. This concept art is far better though and the suits we've had since have been amazing.

Anyone gonna mention the darkness of it. Nah if this was DC it would be "why is everything always so dark" but its Marvel so its fine.

@Hemsey - I know this is the most divisive suit in the MCU, but why when anyone brings it up they choose to show set photos of the pre-post production suit? The suit looks much better in post, even if you still hate it.

If you believe in your opinion, you don't have show the suit in a way we never saw it in the film. To take it to an extreme, it's like trying to prove your point about not liking the Hulk design and posting a photo of Mark Ruffalo in a motion capture suit.

@Hemsey - the colors are so RIGHT on this costume though....

I wish his USO costume was done in a serious manner so it had the details and textures to look serious. Not a bunch of crazy pouches and lines and flaps but just a sleek look that held closely to the classic comics outfit. The USO suit was so...so close to being perfect.

@Hemsey - It's too bad Evans had to lose all that weight for the Snow piercer film. He looks so thin in his costume, should have gave him another month to bulk up more.

@RextheKing - this is also from pre-post production

It's okay, but I like what the Russo's have given us for Winter Soldier and how it has influence the subsequent film. Cap looks pretty badass now.

Chin straps do wonders for Evans face and the costume look overall. Winter soldier got it right.

Cap also needs a sidearm for his modern outfit. He is a soldier after all.
