At the end of the new Captain America: Winter Soldier film (yes
, there be
SPOILERS lurking here laddy...) we see a subtle, yet obvious homage to the Samuel L. Jackson character in the iconic Quentin Tarantino movie Pulp Fiction. As we all know, Jackson plays the eye-patch wearing, leather-jacket robed, gun-toting and ruthless director of SHIELD, Nick Fury. In Pulp Fiction, Jackson plays the afro-wearing, black-suited, gun-toting biblical quoting ruthless murder machine called Jules Winnfield.
SPOILERS BELOW--I THINK THEY WERE PLANTED BY HYDRA. LOOK OUT...
As anyone who saw Pulp Fiction , which hit theaters in the mid-1990s, will remember, one of Samuel L. Jackson's signature pieces was a bit of pseudo-biblical verse he recites as he points a gun at people. To quote Samuel "Jules" Jackson from the film:
“The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee.”
Jackson's character states that this verse is from Ezekiel 25:17. While biblical scholars point out that this is not the true text from the Bible, it is associated strongly with Jules.
Fast-forward to 2014, and at the end of the new Captain America film, we see a tombstone, in a cemetery, for Colonel Nicholas J. Fury. And right under the late Colonel's name, we see a quote from Ezekiel 25:17, stating "
The path of the righteous man..." Since it was already
ascertained that this is not a true Bible quote, the only reason it is in this movie is a direct homage and link honoring Samuel L. Jackson's Pulp Fiction character. Well played, Marvel. And to a comics and film geek, totally cool!
