EXCLUSIVE: Captain America Director Joe Johnston Addresses Sub-Mariner Rumors

There have been a growing groundswell of rumors regarding the appearance of Sub-Mariner in The First Avenger: Captain America, but CBM has a comment from director Joe Johnston on the subject.

Several weeks ago Johnston was asked about the fear of the possible appearance of Sub-Mariner and The Invaders overwhelming Steve Rogers' storyline.

"That talk about Sub-Mariner is just that...talk," says Johnston. "The Invaders make a memorable appearance but the story is solidly about Steve Rogers, his origins, and how he becomes Captain America."

So is there unless a cameo of Namor?

I'm confused. It was stated the invaders would make up a majority of the second half, but there's not Namor. Johnston ur not making sense dude.

And as much as I love both Namor and the rest of The Invaders, this is like music to my ears. "...the story is solidly about Steve Rogers, his origins, and how he becomes Captain America." That's what I've been asking for since day one. Awesome scoop Ed! :)

Namor gotta make entrance in some sort of cameo. He's a bigger character in Marvel Universe than some give him credit for...FF, Avengers..Invaders etc!!

Best person to play him is guy from Lost (can't recall his name) Be so cool.

"The Invaders make a memorable appearance"

So by the sounds of that, they'll only be in it one time and will most likely be during one of the battles towards the end.

NBC-Universal still holds the rights to the Sub-Mariner, so don't expect him to appear in a Paramount production anytime soon.

I didn't here a no. Maybe in a montage of Cap fighting throw the War before finally being frozen?

Great stuff Ed. Guys, Namor is not going to be, and was never going to be in the movie! Johnston's Invaders are basically the comics Howling Commandos with Union Jack..that's it!
Abtrotta
Abtrotta - 9/24/2010, 3:16 PM
nordberg- they may still hold the rights but they can't do anything with them since disney now owns marvel. also paramount can rent or buy that specific character if universal doesnt want to do anything with the character.
nordberg
nordberg - 9/24/2010, 3:18 PM
Andrew:

Disney buying Marvel doesn't make any prior agreements null and void. Universal still has the rights and Namor's use in any film is at their discretion until those rights are either purchased or expire.

Great scoop Ed! I'm glad he said this. "The Invaders make a memorable appearance but the story is solidly about Steve Rogers, his origins, and how he becomes Captain America." gave me Chills. Great answer Joe!

why did joe make that coment about cap & namor both losing their wings in the film.

also fox could be getting funny about releasing namor as his comic states the first ever mutant.

LEEE777 - 9/24/2010, 3:42 PM
That says nothing...

I don't reckon we're getting the real INVADERS just a bunch of second stringers!

Best thing to do is have a minute or two of THE INVADERS cameoing through the years, thats all you need, spin that off in an INVADERS solo movie!

(An yes I mean the original group)

@ starsapphire

i hope your right.

@ leee777

great idea invaders movie, they can do battle with the likes of the red skull, zemo, master man, warrior woman & uber-man.

would be epic.

that would be awesome to see namor at least appear in the film, and have a solo film for himself, and the inhumans for that matter.

Namor's not at Universal. They don't have any characters anymore.

This summer, Kevin Feige told Collider: "Well, Fox has mutants and Sony/Universal…Universal doesn’t have anything. Sony’s got Spidey and Ghostrider, and those family of characters."
CaptainOtter
CaptainOtter - 9/24/2010, 3:57 PM
I really dont want to see the Invaders at all, or at least not in any full capacity. I dont want an explanation on the Human Torch's robotic origins or how Atlantis got involved in WWII. No, I want a Steve Rogers movie. The less of the invaders, the better.

Nordberg

I'll look for the link, but Fiege not long ago was going over who all had what in a interview, and one thing he stated was Universal has nothing (no rights to anything) anymore.

So if Universal doesn't have it, its marvels and that makes sense as Namor's hidden fortress was on the SHIELD map.

The real question is, what/when will Marvel do something with Namor?

Hey, Intruder, I'm only basing the information on what director Joe Johnston told me directly. And for the record, this site is filled with exclusive interviews that I conduct myself, including the recent Joss Whedon/Avengers interview.

But thanks so much for the advice.

i thought fox would have the rights to namor, they got all the x-related charactors.

namor has appeared in the pages of the x-men.

his own comicbook is called namor the first mutant.

i would love marvel studios to prove me wrong.

Marvel Studios owns the rights to the Sub-Mariner, they are actually working on a script for him with Universal, although it probably won't happen for 10 years or so.

Even though it would make me very happy to see them, I am pretty sure Namor, Human Torch, and Toro will only be hinted at through enemy chatter and maybe a newspaper or a sketch on a wall in Howard Stark's lab.

The Invaders will most likely be Cap, Bucky, Union Jack, Patriot, Golden Girl, Spitfire, and Peggy Carter, because all the other heroes besides Bucky and Peggy can be quickly explained with various versions of the Super Soldier Formula, and explaining that Captain America inspired them. It makes him look good ,shows he can be a strong leader and make a big impact on the world.

After seeing the pictures of Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell in civilian gear, I have complete faith that Joe Johnston knows what he's doing. I am more excited than ever!

Wow, people calm down! Stop jumping to conclusions! No need to fly off he handle about this. If the Invaders were heavily involved, wouldn't it be harder for the story to stay centered around Captain America?
