Prosthetic Sculptor Hired for Captain America: The First Avenger

One of the latest additions to the production crew of Marvel Studios' Captain America is Shaune Harrison, who has been tapped as the film's Prosthetic Sculptor. Harrison's experience in movie make-up and special effects is very extensive, including work on the sets of all seven Harry Potter films and Episodes 1 & 2 of the Star Wars franchise.

Harrison, who is based out of the UK, has said his first inspiration in the industry was watching An American Werewolf In London at the age of thirteen. Since beginning effects work at age twenty, the award winning designer has participated in over 40 films and television shows; as well as producing and directing several of his own short film.

His work on Captain America will more than likely focus on bringing the movie's antagonist the Red Skull, portrayed by Hugo Weaving, to life. Toby Jones has also joined the production as evil scientist Arnim Zola; which may be another character Harrison will have to work with. If the script allows for fan-favorite villain Baron Zemo to join the mix, it's no doubt that Harrison could find his hands full come June 28th; the project's official start date.

The images in this article are from Harrison's work on the films Dark Skye, Uninvited and The Skeleton Crew.

Below you'll find a full listing of his film and TV credits, which happen to include several popular science fiction productions and comic book adaptations:

This is cool. I hope it looks way better then the one in the 90's movie did. I'm sure it will though. It seems like this guy has worked on a lot of movies I've seen.

my confidence in the film is growing. this guy has the almost the perfect resume except for the Mortal Kombat: Annihilation bit. not a fan.

@SoulEater
good artwork. looks like you're hoping for a Kronen look from Hellboy.

@Dogs
i hope they don't do Ultimate. Red Skull is Cap's son?!!
mesa no think so!

DogsOfWar - 6/1/2010, 11:51 PM
I could go with the Ultimate look as long as it is the 616 storyline.

I liked the unique origins and appearence that Millar gave the Ultimate Red Skull but the look of that character most definitely isnt what I'd like to see in the movie!

In WWII, the Red Skull always wore a mask so I wonder whether they'll go for that or actually make him deformed...I actually think that the mask idea would be better!

As long as he looks kick ass and bad ass, I don't care what they use, CG or prosthetics. Though I wouldn't mind if they used a bit of the CGI that was implemented for Two-Face in TDK.

@ Josh: I was about to say that.

Personally I think they should stick with the classic red mask scenario, but whatever they come up with will be fine with me as long as it doesn't look stupid.

Originally The Red Skull's mask was supposed to look like a stylized version of the Totenkopf. The very recognizable Nazi deaths head/skull and crossbones insignia. It was awarded to him by Hitler so that he could be the very personification of the regime's might

i would much rather it not be a mask. it should be the Nazi's imperfect Super Soldier Serum that deforms his face.

I know that in the comics it was originally a mask, but do we really want to see a mask with a mouth that doesn't move when he talks?? no thanks.
Denn1s
Denn1s - 6/2/2010, 5:48 AM
he wore a mask at first but after an accident the mask melted on his face.
Moltenman
Moltenman - 6/2/2010, 5:57 AM
As a soldier or the nazi's is it not possible that he has seen some combat and his appearance would be more realistic as burns across his skull, kind of like Two face? I just think this would be a more realistic and believable option than a mask, or making him look like he did in the 90's movie.
McLovin
McLovin - 6/2/2010, 6:58 AM
You know guys, I think with this guy in charge of the makeup, we are in good hands one way or the other. Whether they go with a mask or the scared look, that shit will look scary as fcuk! I think its a win-win either way they go with it!

I also have a good feeling washing over me. I'm still not crazy over Evans, but its nice to see that Marvel is really going through the right motions to make this move the way it should be. I expect Hugo to give us a great performance and the kiddies some crazy nightmares!!!

As far as the Ultimates argument. Hey, some of the Ultimates stuff is good. Some of it is down right TERRIBLE (Red Skull being one of them). Do I like the Ultimate U. more than the 616? WHAT ARE JU CRASY OR SUNTING??!! But I do like the fact that they gave us a different, fresher take on some of these characters. It doesn't effect the regular continuity so who cares. To me it's just another "Else Wheres" story. I think if anything, it's like when your relationship gets stale with the GF, then you break up for a little while, only to date a girl that reminds you how much you miss your ex. So whether you love or hate the Ultimates, at least it's nice to know Marvel isn't afraid to spice things up a bit. Even if just to remind you why you fell in love with that slut in the 1st place ;-)

p.s. Yeah Poni, what ever did happen with that Hulk article from last night?

Don't even talk to me about Ultimate Red Skull.

I hope they go with the mask, too, rather than scarring. I think it would look cool if it was plastic or metal like and actual death mask, not some conforming prosthetic thing. Hearing Weavings voice coming from behind that fixed death grin would be awesome. V for Vendetta showed he doesn't need he's face to act.

Upupandaway - 6/2/2010, 7:12 AM
With either the mask or scarring, I have confidence in this guy. Here's some Ultimate Red Skull... I mean Killface.

I like the design that GUNSMITH put up. That shit looks cool. Then again, I also love the DK Two-Face CGI look (I mean, really ... who doesn't?).

Maybe they can go with a combo deal. The prosthetic mask, with a touch of CGI, large fries and a drink? WHO'S WITH ME??!!

hewilldefytheirgravity - 6/2/2010, 7:49 AM
Red Skull face is still a mask is'nt it? I'm going by that old ass cartoon from the 60's. He was given a menacing red mask that looked like a skull. I dont know whats happening with Red Skull today in the comics but its looking like they want to go with skull face instead of skull mask.

This is awesome! They're doin' SKULL right!

He gets disfigured which sends him off the
rails on a crazy ride!

Yee-haaaaawwww! Bring on the CAP!!!
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 6/2/2010, 8:14 AM
I think they will do the mask and then some how he will have the accident with his own mist and get stuck with a deformity.

As for the Ultimates hate going on! I wasn't fond of it but Jesus! It wasn't suppose to be a carbon F'n copy of the original. It is supposed to be it's own story. I would never read them if it was the same damn tale that was originally told just with references to American idol and pop culture. As a matter of fact they did that in another series with cap waking up in a guest room at Tony's home and watching T.V. in aahw.

I want these movies to take element from both the Original and the Ultimates. Cause if it was identical to the comics I read....guess what....it will suck! It wont be as good as the original. Give me what I want to see and give me something new at the same time!
MassExecutions1
MassExecutions1 - 6/2/2010, 8:29 AM
@MikeSanderson09 - Stay true? It was a mask in the comics until he got dosed with some of his own dust of death stuff. A mask done right would be awesome. Its like the Joker in the Dark Knight. What's scarier, a guy who gets disfigured and goes crazy, or a guy who's crazy and takes on a crazy appearance because he thinks its a good idea?

Talking about Evans (again).. i have come to realize that, if we INDEED see the FF´s role and Cap´s role as 2 different Universes, i don´t really mind..of course, as long as Marvel gets those rights back, AND THEN WE CAN SEE ANOTHER ACTOR playing Human Torch in the same Movie Universe as Evan´s Cap..
