This week we got
our first official look at Brie Larson as Captain Marvel and courtesy of Entertainment Weekly,
we learned a ton about the upcoming film. The coverage continues today with new details regarding the 1990s setting of the movie.
When
Captain Marvel arrives in theaters next year, fans will travel back in time to the mid-'90s, before the
Avengers or really any other superheroes were around. As explained by executive producer Jonathan Schwartz,
"It’s giving Carol a place in the cinematic universe that she can carve out for her own, where she wasn’t one superheroine out of many."
Captain Marvel will be the 21st film released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and while other films in the MCU have been set in the past, EW points out
"Captain Marvel’s ‘90s setting is a chance to explore what a Marvel story looks like in a post-Cold War America — where someone like Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is just a lowly S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with no extraterrestrial experience."
One of
the stills released this week featured a much-younger version of Jackson's Nick Fury who is described as a little more than a "desk jockey" at S.H.I.E.L.D.
No one knows exactly what to expect from Marvel's first movie starring a female superhero - and
quite possibly the most powerful to be introduced to the MCU - but Schwartz added that
Captain Marvel is drawing inspiration from '90s action movies.
“’90s action movie is not the worst reference in the world, especially when you start looking at Robocop, Total Recall, even Starship Troopers a little bit,” Schwartz said.
“Terminator 2, Independence Day. There’s a high-concept action-movie feel there that ends up being very character-based but also super badass, which is kind of the bullseye we wanted to hit.”
Additionally, with the '90s, director Anna Boden promises plenty of fun, era-appropriate references.
“The ‘90s doesn’t feel that long ago to us because we’re really old,” Boden said.
“But doing this movie has really made us realize how out of date so much stuff from the ‘90s actually is, and we’ve been having a lot of fun with that.”
This all sounds incredibly promising and, hopefully, we get a trailer soon. Rumor has it we could see our first teaser trailer
in about two weeks, but that hasn't been confirmed.
Captain Marvel flies into theaters March 8, 2019.
