Fancast: Captain Marvel

Fancast: Captain Marvel

A fancast for Marvel's upcoming female lead superhero film Captain Marvel. This is a fancast for multiple characters/villains that could possibly appear in her solo outing due to no confirmations as of press time.

Joss Whedon as the Director
Whedon has transformed the geek culture into something that as of now can't be ignored and part of that is due to his talent and affinity for creating strong characters with who the audience can relate and find substance in. This is why I feel he would be the perfect director for Carol's first solo outing as he obviously needs a break after directing Age of Ultron and Captain Marvel would be the perfect return project for him.

Melanie Laurent as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel
After encountering the Kree hero Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was accidentally subjected to otherworldly radiation that transformed her into a superhuman warrior. Calling herself Ms. Marvel, she established herself as one of Marvel's most powerful and prominent heroes, both as a solo heroine and as a member of the Avengers. She has now adopted the mantle of Captain Marvel for herself.

Reason for Casting: The main thing I wanted to focus on when I chose my pick for Captain Marvel was acting ability. Laurent may not be physically ideal for the role to some but she has years to prepare. My point is if we turned the camera on right now Laurent would likely give us the best performance out of many which is why I chose her. It doesn't hurt that she has multiple critically acclaimed roles under her belt and it certainly doesn't hurt that she's super beautiful.

Edward Burns as Captain Mar-Vell
A captain in the Kree militia, Mar-Vell rebelled against a racist tyrannical empire to defend Earth and in so doing became the "Protector of the Universe" known as Captain Marvel. Since his tragic death to cancer, Captain Marvel has inspired many superheroes and heroines and his legacy is still felt throughout the Marvel universe.

Reason for Casting: Burns has garnered a reputation for being underrated in his craft. It's really not easy to argue the fact, with films like Saving Private Ryan, The Brothers McMullen and Newlyweds on his list of achievements. Burns could pull this role of effortlessly as he has the looks and the charisma necessary to play this role.

Matt Dillon as Commander Yon-Rogg
Kree Commander Yon-Rogg, Enemy of Captain Mar-Vell and Ms. Marvel. Commander of the starship which brought Mar-Vell to earth. He held a hatred for Mar-Vell for being an outstanding Kree warrior, and for the relationship that Mar-Vell shared with Una the Medic.

Reason for Casting: Matt Dillon is a damn fine actor and has been receiving acclaim for his role on Wayward Pines and even caught some traction for being in True Detective despite his appearance never coming to fruition, Dillon remains one of Hollywood's most underrated actors with great films on his mantle like Over the Edge, My Bodyguard, Drugstore Cowboy and Malcolm X it's weird to think a studio hasn't snatched him up for a comic book film yet.

Laura Vandervoort as Abigail Brand
Abigail Brand is the director of S.W.O.R.D. (the Sentient World Observation & Response Department), an offshoot of S.H.I.E.L.D. that deals with extraterrestrial threats. She is a woman of mixed heritage, being half alien and half mutant, and is a frequent ally of the Avengers.

Reason for Casting: Vandervoort was a rare case as she found success after a hit television show went off the air in Smallville. Laura starred in films such as The Lookout and showed up in Ted. Vandervoort has proven she's a serviceable actress with much talent and I think she could do wonders for the role of Abigail Brand. (I don't know if the character or any character has appeared in AOS as I do not watch that awful show)

John Hawkes as Henry Gyrich
Henry Peter Gyrich, an ambitious politician, has often been a thorn in the side to the superhuman community. Afraid of that which is different, Gyrich has often hindered the effectiveness of superheroes and has been among the first to blame them for society's ills.

Reason for Casting: Hawkes is truly one of the best actors working today and with Martin Freeman joining Civil War it looks like the search for talent will never stop for Marvel. Henry Gyrich is a great villainous role for Hawkes considering his profound work in films like Lincoln, Winter's Bone and The Sessions. On a side note this is my casting if Martin Freeman already isn't this character, which I have a strong feeling he is or at least an amalgamation of several different characters including this one.

Bill Nighy as Supreme Intelligence
The Kree supreme Intelligence is the collective of the greatest Kree minds in history.Supreme Intelligence is a cybernetic computer system which sums the mightiest military minds of untold millennia. Intelligence from all corners of the Kree Empire continuously flow through it's circuits. Not only does it store information it also deduces and compiles information, figuring out enemies secrets, strategies and weaknesses. The Supreme Intelligence's sole purpose is to genetically improve the Kree race, after generations of being at a standstill.

Reason for Casting: Nighy has been long known for his impressive work with classics such as Antonia & Jane, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Page Eight, Pride and known by many as the man that brought life to Viktor in Underworld and Davy Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Nighy is an actor's actor and would be perfect to portray the one possibly capable of furthering the Kree centuries ahead of their time.

Eliza Dushku as Karla Sofen/Moonstone
Dr. Karla Sofen is a founding member of the Thunderbolts and former member of the Masters of Evil. She has flirted with both sides of the law in Norman Osborn's Avengers as Ms. Marvel. She's a control freak with nearly limitless power granted her by moonstones, hence her code name.

Reason for Casting: Moonstone would ideally be the main antagonist of this film and I felt it only right to cast one of my runner ups for Captain Marvel as her enemy in the film Moonstone. Dushku has been a geek favorite far longer than I can remember with her collaborations with Joss Whedon to True Lies and That Night and her stints on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Dushku could definitely own this role and return in future films as one of the few memorable villains Marvel hasn't killed off which is an exclusive club as of press time.

Scott Haze as Kang the Conqueror
A time traveling conqueror with vast powers and technological supremacy. He has taken every opportunity to torment the Marvel Universe and is one of the Avengers greatest foes, Kang has amassed an empire with a citizenry of millions, and cut a swath of terror through the ages.

Reason for Casting: Haze in his short career has impressed critics with his serious roles in films like As I Lay Dying and Child of God. Scott with the talent he has and being one of the breakout indie performances of the last five years needs to be known on a national scale and I think him doing motion capture and possibly voicing Kang the Conqueror could do just that for him.

Arden Cho as Monica Chang
The chief of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Artificial Intelligence Division. She was tasked with interrogating Hank Pym after a virus he created to destroyed Ultron, evolved into a highly volatile artificial intelligence known as Dimitrios. Along with Pym, she gathered a team to hunt down Dimitrios after he committed several cyber-attacks across the world.

Reason for Casting: Cho is one of the varied great performers on Teen Wolf and her performances on television give me enough confidence to believe she could pull off this character with the right direction. As far as I know her character has yet to be introduced in any MCU medium with television included so a cameo in Captain Marvel would be the perfect opportunity to establish the badass SHIELD operative.

\

Chace Crawford as Noh-Varr
Noh-Varr was the youngest member of a Kree Diplomatic team who were blown out of the sky after reaching Earth. Only Noh-Varr survived and vowed vengeance on all mankind but was later tasked with protecting them in the name of the Kree, becoming Captain Marvel and later The Protector. After being forced out of the Avengers, he is now part of the Young Avengers.

Reason for Casting: Crawford was a relevant pick for Cyclops upon a soft reboot of the X-Men franchise and at only thirty years old he boasts an resume of impressive performances from Gossip Girl to What to Expect When You're Expecting. Crawford has proven he's a very serviceable actor and the charisma he's shown is what would be needed for a character like Noh-Varr if he ever were to appear.

Nicole Beharie as Monica Rambeau/Spectrum
After being exposed to extra-dimensional energy, Lt. Monica Rambeau gained the ability to manipulate various energies of the electromagnetic spectrum. She has gone by many code-names over the years whilst utilizing these abilities as a crime fighter. Monica has served alongside the Avengers in various incarnations and operated as their leader for a time.

Reason for Casting: We're getting into the "maybe" cameos here but I've seen Spectrum fancast in other articles so I'm gonna say maybe it's not so unlikely. Beharie has been in great films co-starring alongside Magneto himself Michael Fassbender, 42 alongside Chadwick Boseman and appearing and being a part of the main cast of Sleepy Hollow. Beharie is no doubt a talented actress that could play this role with ease.

Ron Perlman as J'son of Spartax
Former Emperor of the Spartoi Empire and father of Star-Lord, J'son of Spartax is now a galactic crime boss known as Mr. Knife.Jason is the son of Emperor Eson of Spartoi, and Prince and heir to the royal throne. He is very idealistic, which causes the ruling Council of Ministers to prevent him from taking his father's place as ruler. As the rules of education of his culture dictate, he grew up on dozens of planets with dozens of professions including miner, poet, servant, soldier and pilot, the latter which he seems to prefer. He is also tutored in many different fields.

Reason for Casting: I do believe it was James Gunn that ruled out the possibility of J'son being Star Lord's father. I know so don't bother in the comments section but what we all should realize by now is that directors lie, actors lie, and pretty much anyone else will lie in order to preserve a big secret pertaining to the film (James Marsden saying he wasn't in DOFP anyone?). If they are in fact lying I would love if Ron Perlman one of the most respected actors in film and the comic book genre to play J'son. The resemblance is uncanny and I doubt anyone is saying Perlman is a bad actor in any sense.

Jack O'Connell as Richard Rider/Nova
Richard Rider is a middle-class man from the United States who became a member of the Nova Corps. Calling himself "Nova," Rider is an inter-galactic peace-keeper. He is empowered by the Nova Force. At present, Richard Rider is the Nova-Prime; the leader of the Nova Corps.

Reason for Casting: Ideally Nova would appear in GOTG Vol. 2 but if that indeed doesn't happen I think his introduction would fit quite nicely somewhere in between Captain Marvel as an after credits scene or Inhumans as a secondary character. O'Connell has shown his acting chops in films like This is England, Unbroken and '71. For his stellar performances and hopefully loss of an accent I think O'Connell would do great as Nova.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Jessica Drew/Spider Woman
Jessica Drew was genetically enhanced and given super-powers by the criminal organization HYDRA, for whom she became an assassin as Spider-Woman. She later reformed and became a SHIELD agent and is currently a member of the Avengers and an Agent of SWORD.

Reason for Casting: Now if I'm being honest this character is probably the least likely to appear in a Captain Marvel film if it's truly the space opera I imagine but it's the character I want to appear most especially with her growing popularity amongst fans and fanboys alike. Winstead has shown she can definitely act and also handle action and her age makes Drew's womance with Captain Marvel a definite possibility as it's something I've always wanted to see translated to the big screen.

Well that's actually the last fancast I had in the pipe for a while so unless some inspiration hits or yet another CBM is announced (and probably will) I'll be off the radar with fancasting. If you enjoyed this please check out my other fancasts.

Melanie Laurent <3

If they do go younger, I wouldn't mind Brie Larson, Mackenzie Davis, Alicia Vikander...

But Natalie Dormer for Carol Danvers or GTFO.

For a fan cast it's great. I don't agree with the actress for Carol Danvers. Also putting Spectrum, Spider woman would be a bit of an overkill and it would be a female team up movie rather than a Captain Marvel movie. Also I don't want Whedon to direct this. It would be cool to see Spectrum and Spiderwoman in post credit scenes.

not sure about Melanie Laurent, the type of Carol Danvers I'd like to see is more like Connie Nielsen in Basic. While she is to old I think Charlize Theron or Katheryn Winnick could portray that military demeanor well. I'm also hoping they can talk RDJ into a cameo in this. he and Rhodes are the right characters to connect it to the rest of the MCU.

Whedon's never going back to Marvel.

And a lot of characters to introduce in this one movie.

Well casted though.

Laurent looks great, does she have a strong accent?
If not Emily Blunt then id say Anna Torv,

I can't say I could see Eliza Dushku as Moonstone, she's a good actress, I thought she suits TV better, with someone like Moonstone she needs to be very charismatic and manipulative and subtle. Which is something I haven't seen Dushku be in any of her roles.

He's a world class actor!

@CherryBomb Laurent didn't have much of an accent in Enemy so I think she'd be able to lose it or change it by the time the film came out.

She had no accent I could notice in Now You See Me as well.

This... This is something... Pretty damn good; your hard work is rare and commendable- I'm not too keen on all choices preferring Abbie Cornish for the titular role but the rest are very good; nice stuff!

Agree with @Kong that it's a ton of characters for just one movie, but all of your choices are pretty spot-on (Especially Jack O'Connell as Richard Rider)
