This week, Captain Marvel finally arrives in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, what you may not recall, is that the character was very nearly introduced in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron.
In an interview that's resurfaced from four years ago, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige actually revealed that director Joss Whedon wanted to introduce Carol Danvers right at the end of the movie in a scene that would have been cool to see, but wouldn't have really made a whole lot of sense based on what he says here.
"[Captain Marvel] was in a draft. But to me, it would have done that character a disservice, to meet her fully formed, in a costume and part of the Avengers already when 99% of the audience would go, ‘Who is that?’ It’s just not the way we’ve done it before. The way we reveal Scarlet Witch at the end of the movie? Those were Captain Marvel plate shots. Joss said, ‘We’ll cast her later!’ And I said, ‘Yeah Joss, we’ll cast her later.’ [Whispers to an invisible associate who isn't Joss] ‘We’re not putting her in there!’"
This could go some way in explaining why Whedon ultimately parted ways with Marvel Studios as he clearly had an idea he was enthusiastic about which Feige never had any intention of making a reality. For what it's worth, they certainly didn't hang around when it came to casting the character as Brie Larson was revealed as Carol Danvers at Comic-Con the following year.
Still, with Captain Marvel just days away, it's interesting to think about what might have been and how a sudden introduction for the hero during the "Avengers A-" scene would have changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some significant ways. She would have factored into Captain America: Civil War and the 90s set origin story we're getting would have never happened.
