EDITORIAL: Why Marvel's TV Heroes Deserve To Be In CIVIL WAR

Houston, we have a problem! While I am extremely excited for Captain America: Civil War, a minor concern is slowly becoming major in the back of my mind. Just how faithful will the movie be to the story arc? Why am I so concerned? You know what to do.

Let me get straight to the point: Civil War was the biggest story Marvel ever told. Not the best, far from it, but the biggest. While heroes Thor and Hulk were off-planet at the time, the Superhuman Registration Act (I'm guessing this is what "the Accords" defend in the movie) affected every hero who was on Earth. This was a story that reached to every corner of the Marvel universe.

When Civil War was announced as the basis for the third Captain America movie, many were concerned. Besides the fact that a lot of people don't even like the story, it didn't feel right for a solo film. Wouldn't it be better as an Avengers/event film? Then we found out that the movie show Cap's perspective, with the Winter Soldier being caught in the middle of the conflict. The fans relaxed, for the most part.

I have no problem with Bucky being a focus in this movie, or even that there are so many superheroes (and two huge villains!!) in it. What concerns me is that the premise seems to revolve around the Avengers specifically. Here is the official synopsis from the Marvel website:

“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.

While the comics focused on people with powers in general, the synopsis seems to suggest it's about the Avengers specifically. The key phrases here are "when to enlist the services of the team" and "fractures the Avengers." While obviously a conflict on this scale would break up the team, the story was so much more than the Avengers. Civil War was not a Captain America story, and it was not an Avengers story. It was a Marvel story, period.

This concern might seem redundant when you realize that non-Avengers Ant-Man, Spider-Man and Black Panther are playing important roles in the movie. And while this is very true, Ant-Man and Spider-Man are still recruits. Ant-Man is being recruited by Captain America to join a team, and Spider-Man is being recruited to join a team. Black Panther is here for Wakanda, somehow, but we all know he's still an Avenger. So far, we've seen a focus on how the government will control the Avengers, not powered people altogether, which in my opinion is part of what made the Civil War comics special.

It wouldn't make a lot of sense to throw the TV characters in the movie and give them prominent roles, seeing how big portions of the movie-going audience won't have any idea who they are. But if I'm wrong and the Accords do end up focusing on powered people altogether, having Marvel's TV heroes have a cameo portion in the film would show how high the stakes are. While this is only one scenario, having the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Mockingbird, Quake, Secret Warriors) fight the Defenders (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Punisher) would show just how huge the conflict has risen. This would be a great fan-service for MCU followers, would prove faithful the comic books and only require 30 seconds worth of footage, tops.

Of course, they could always have Matt Murdock defend Steve Rogers in court, and while that would be cool, it would still take him out of the fight. Civil War is a superhero story, and should involve all of the heroes, not just Avengers.

Well CBM, we've reached the portion of this article where the tomatoes are thrown. That's right, it's time for you to give me shit! Let me know what you think in the comment section below!

Great article! Personally, it's fine with me if the Agents of SHIELD characters aren't in the movie, but I'd love to see the Defenders in there. Particularly Daredevil, Punisher, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.

Daredevil and Punisher both were in some of the best parts of the comic. Would love to see those in the movie.

They have plenty of time to shoot a few scenes that include our TV heroes. Maybe we see a montage at the end of the movie showcasing the rise in vigilantism, showcasing the larger MCU with cameos from these emerging heroes.
It could be an uplifting montage with maybe a voiceover from Cap to tell us that heroes are everywhere, heroes who fight for the the little guy. Heroes who fight crime and corruption, and most of all, fight for the world... and then we see Spidey swing by.

The end.

So you want the TV characters to be in a film with Vision, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Sharon Carter, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch, Iron Man, War Machine, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Baron Zemo all in this suppose Captain America film?

People still be trying to think that this is a solo Captain America's film.

Why is this movie even called "Captain America: Civil War"

Be honest and just call it "Avengers: Civil War"

I like what they're doing with it but I do kind of agree. I've always thought the big events should have been standalone movies. Something like Marvel's Secret Wars, Marvel's Civil War, and Marvel's Infinity Wars. Could've been it's own trilogy

I always thought it was a little to early for a Civil War movie. I always thought it would be better after Infinity War, because their relationships would be even stronger after going through so much. It also should definitely be an avengers movie.

@sKeemAn

Yeah, me too. The universe would also be more expanded by then, so it would be much closer to the comic version. However, by then, most of the prinicipal actors would be gone by then, and while whoever they get to replace them would still be awesome, the conflict would have less impact, as you aren't going to be seeing the guys who played the characters for over 10 years, rather new faces.

I hope Iron Fist never appears in the MCU and his show doesn't happen.

See, this is why I think making Civil War the "Avengers 3, PT. 1 and 2" would have been a better move for Marvel, rather than Infinity War. First, the Infinity War threads have dragged on to the point where I fear it will now seem rushed, while Civil War seems to be coming far too soon after Age of Ultron.

Putting some distance between Age of Ultron and Civil War would have allowed space for Agents of SHIELD, the Defenders Netflix shows, and the debuting Avengers (DS, SM, BP) to become fully established before bringing them all together in a two-part Civil War story. Maybe Civil War doesn't need that much time, but the registration act concept would go a lot further if built on the actions of new, local heroes such as Daredevil and Spider-man, and not just the Avengers.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: I'm all for giving the non-movie MCU characters at least a small nod in Civil War!

Seeing Daisy Johnson, Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones etc for a few seconds would excite the fans who already know who they are, and wouldn't hurt anyone else.

And if someone who only watched the movies is confused and/or intrigued enough about who those people were to inquire they would learn that there's a lot of material for them see more of them.

Sounds good to me! :)

What's funny is that these AoS actors tweet to the big Marvel actors like they're friends but they never reply back to them. They don't even acknowledge them.

@VisualMaximus I honestly think that AoS isn't a part of the MCU. Think about it, the show may be affected by what major things happen in the movies, but nothing from the show ever affects the movies. Coulson's death is the reason the Avengers exist! Joss Whedon himself didn't put Coulson in Age of Ultron, Coulson hasn't been mentioned since Avengers. A whole phase without a man who supposedly alive or a clone or whatever. I'm pretty sure Cap, Tony, Pepper, and Black Widow would be happy to hear that their friend is alive.

Not to mention that in Age of Ultron, Fury helped the Avengers with SHIELD 2.0 and no Coulson. Last time I checked they were calling themselves SHIELD on AoS.

@GliderMan

Thumbed. Would love to see the Tv and Movie worlds combine. I think a major issue with AOS is the Coulson thing, because the Avengers still don't know he's alive. Whedon actually brought that up during the press for AOU.

The Netflix characters should definitely show up though, I was re-reading Alias and it would be awesome to see it go the other way too and have Scott Lang and other Avengers have a quick cameo on that show

And Daredevil needs to show up in the movies

Not to mention that in Age of Ultron, Fury helped the Avengers with SHIELD 2.0 and no Coulson. Last time I checked they were calling themselves SHIELD on AoS.

Coulson and his team provided Maria Hill with the location of Strucker and the Scepter, and Coulson was overseeing the execution of 'Theta Protocol', aka 'getting that fancy off-the-books helicarrier ready for action'.

Hill is the one dealing with the Avengers directly. Fury is doing his own thing, keeping an eye on things, ready to intervene when he deems it necessary. And the resurrected Coulson is responsible for doing the behind-the-scenes day-to-day SHIELD 2.0 stuff.

I mean, cameos would be nice, I feel the film is doing quite alright in content, and asking more is a bit much right now. I do wish Civil War was in a few parts, so we could see Daredevil and others.

But at this point, they are so small scale that the government may not even know of their existence right now.

@El Capitan GliderMan. Ya know what broski, I would love for Quake and Mockingbird to show up. For two good reasons. To shut up the haters that try so hard to pretend like the shows and movies don't run parallel with each other in the same universe, and because it would be friggin awesome. Just those two at least. The Netflix shows are just getting started so I can see leaving them out.

Here comes some thumb! And I brought no lube!
