Brie Larson has had a unique journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Oscar-winner actually played Carol Danvers in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame before shooting her origin story, 2019's Captain Marvel, and has only made a brief appearance since then in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' mid-credits scene.
Carol Danvers will take centre stage in The Marvels alongside Ms. Marvel and Spectrum, and Larson recently talked to Insider about the work she's been doing to get back into superhero shape.
"In the first film, she's developing that strength, and so I was developing my own personal strength with this one," Larson said. "She's already got more mastery over her powers. She can fly now. And so having my body more limber, more ready for these types of movements, like wirework, which I didn't have to do as much on the first one, was the main goal."
The actress added that she's also mastered doing one-arm pull-ups. "I just started to get kind of obsessed with it. When people say like, 'Oh, girls can't do that,' it just makes me wanna do it even more. So there were huge accomplishments this time and I just feel like my body's just getting more used to this and more and more excited. Now, it feels weird to not train. I look forward to it."
Captain Marvel was still in pre-production when Larson shot her role in the last two Avengers movies, and we learned in her solo outing that the hero was only just beginning to discover the extent of her abilities. It's now been decades since the events of that story, so we're fully expecting Carol to power-up and show why she's one of the MCU's most formidable characters in this sequel.
The Marvels is set to be released in theaters on February 17, 2023.
