Last week on MARVEL A-I-C: AXEL-IN-CHARGE, CBR's regular interview with Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso the topic was the new “Totally Awesome Hulk” comic and the unmasking of the new Hulk, Amadeus Cho.

On what an Asian-American Hulk means to him, Alonso said,

I'll start at the top: My wife is Korean, and let me tell you, I scored a [lot] of points with this! [Laughs] I can only imagine the reaction of my [eomeoni] [mother] and two [cheo nams] [brothers] who're always asking me when the world is going to get an A-list Korean super hero. I think this fits the bill. Come December, the strongest character in the Marvel Universe is going to be a 19-year-old Korean kid that might have a thing or two in common with Banner.”

Alonso said there are also a lot of differences, “Let's just say Amadeus has got a little too much swagger. “

He also gave some insight on where Bruce Banner stands in the comics,

“Oh, and to anyone that thinks we're abandoning Banner, you are dead wrong. Banner's story does not end with him no longer being the Hulk. It begins a new chapter for him, and we are very excited about that, too.”

If anybody was wondering where exactly this idea had its inception, it all started with editor Mark Paniccia,

“At some point, I said I was I kind of bored by the prospect of going back to the well with Banner, and asked what if someone else, someone with a different attitude, were to be the Hulk?  And Mark immediately suggested Amadeus, and pretty much everyone in the room loved it. It's such a no-brainer: Like Banner, Amadeus Cho is a 98-pound weakling with a giant-sized intellect, but that's where the similarities end. [Laughs] So that's a great place to start a new era of Hulk.”

Alonso went on to talk about how Cho’s arrogant personality and intelligence will give Cho a different attitude towards being the Hulk,

Amadeus is bit cocky and arrogant, like a lot of young guys are at that age, and he's ranked as the fifth or sixth smartest guy in the world so he's kind of got the right to be. And now he's been given this awesome power. He's going to have a very different attitude towards being the Hulk. He's been given the keys to a brand-new Maserati, he's going to see a wide-open road in front of him, and he's going to drive it fast.”

Greg Pak is the co-creator of Amadeus Cho who had a celebrated run on "Incredible Hulk," and used Cho and the Hulk in his "Savage Wolverine" story.

On Greg Pak’s involvement in the comic, Alonso said,

“We knew he loved both characters, he's Korean-American, and while he is very selective about his projects, we just figured he'd see the significance of this moment.  And he did. He immediately agreed to be a part of the team, and was involved in the planning from the ground floor. He designed the new Hulk, from his the MMA-inspired board shorts to his K-Pop hair and he very much collaborated on creating the villain for the first arc. “

What do you think?  Are you ready to see Amadeus Cho suit up as the “Totally Awesome Hulk”?  Are you happy to hear that this will start a new chapter for Bruce Banner?

[frick] you, Marvel. If you want your universe to be diverse, make new and exciting characters for people to care about. Stop force feeding us this bullshit by piggybacking these characters off of the success of others. I could accept a black Nick Fury. Hell, I could even accept a mixed Spider-Man. But excess changing the race or gender of an already established character just to be PC and 'inclusionary' is a direct slap in the face. It's so abundantly transparent that it's disgusting. And before anyone starts their bullshit, shut up. It's not racist to want to see the things you love stay as they are.

So he made the Hulk Korean to make his wife happy? Ok then

Cue "[frick] diversity, for the sake of diversity!" "If you want diverse super heroes create new ones!" "I hate this PC diversity crap!" shitfits from angry little white fanboys.

I'm a DC guy, but I'll actually be getting this one, and read it and enjoy youse guys hissyfits.

Of course we never can think up original iconic characters...

Ladies and gentlemen. Reverse racism at it's finest.

This how I feel.

@RocketRed

I like both Marvel and DC, but honestly Marvel has done so much with Banner already, and I'm positive that they'll never totally abandon Banner as a character like Alonso is saying, I'm also positive that Banner will be Hulk again eventually, just like Thor will be Thor again

I wasn't a big fan of Red Hulk and stuff like that, but I think this could be cool, and the Hulk has been a part of Cho's history in the comics from the beginning, so this actually makes sense

I think this has a lot of potential, or it could be really bad, haha, either way I'm gonna check it out

@kinghulk

I forgot to comment in the other thread about Fantastic Four yesterday. Your right, I think The Thing is with Guardians of The Galaxy, I wonder where the rest of the FF will be placed

I really don't understand why fans complain so much about this kind of change.
Especially with all the parallel universes in comics.

And let's face it, the last years of Hulk were quite bad. One of my least favorite Marvel character.
What's wrong with change as long as quality follows ?

@superotherside I kinda agree that the changing all of the races and genders of iconic characters is a bit much recently, but come on. It's not reverse racism! Or racism!

So Alonso made the Hulk Korean just to get sex points from his wife.

What an ass.hole.

Yeah, that's the right attitude. If the story's good I don't care who's the protagonist. This creative team is very good, so I trust them. Hopefully they'll deliver.

Enki - 9/7/2015, 8:39 AM
And I agree with Blanka1212, if you want diversity with the heroes, introduce new characters that are interesting and bring them to prevalence.

Or better yet, bring to the forefront characters like Blade, Northstar, and Sunfire just to give you a few examples. Stop f.ucking around with the status quo of the established major characters.
RocketRed
RocketRed - 9/7/2015, 8:52 AM
I think it's super cool when they race bend like that. Hopefully they'll deliver storywise.

The fact that fanboys whine so much about it is just the icing on the cake.

I don't say this much, but good going, Marvel!

@RocketRed @Pedrito @NandoStevens

Well, it's not good story telling at the very least. They need to start making new characters instead of slapping a different color on the same story.

It is actually reverse racism though, if you think about it.

I'll give you an idea of how this could go down in the office to show you.

Marvel: We need a Korean superhero!

Writer: How about this character?

*Submits new original hero.*

Marvel: Scratch that, we want someone who will sell! How about making Hulk Korean!

Writer: Why?

Marvel: Because that way we can have diversity!

Writer: Why can't we have diversity with this great new character?

Marvel: Because... YOU'RE FIRED! NEXT WRITER!

*Next writer walks in.*

Marvel: We need diversity. We want to make Hulk be Korean.

Writer: But...

Marvel: Nope, no buts. We just fired the last guy.

Writer: Oh ok, then it's a brilliant idea! Korean Hulk it is!

Seriously with all the great stuff that Dragon Ball Z and other manga does why don't they just create a new title and hire one of their writers.

Would it be that hard to do?

Besides, it's an accepted fact that none of this will change a thing.

Why this is bad: If you aren't making changes to the status quo that last, then why is it necessary for me to pick of this book when it changes nothing?

I miss nothing if I don't read this book.

That's not even bad, it's just sad storytelling.

@ManCalledSting

In France the issues have a few months delay but the last quest of Hulk (pre-Secret Wars) is precisely to cure all the other Hulk (A-Bomb, Red She-hulk, Red Hulk) because the writers did come to the same conclusion as you.
RocketRed
RocketRed - 9/7/2015, 10:33 AM
Oh, I'M suspicious? hahahahahaha I don't need to say I'm progressive. My actions speak for themselves, and I'm proud to be a liberal, proud to be progressive.

You're the one who crying about 'reverse racism', that says a lot about you.

Also, if you EVER complained about 'SJW' you're either racist, misogynistic or a homophobe. That's just a fact.
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 9/7/2015, 10:51 AM
@superotherside

I totally get what your saying, but in this case it totally fits with the evolution of the characters and the progression of the story.

They didn't just go, lets take this random character that has nothing to do with The Hulk and make him the Hulk because he's Asian.

And, if they did have that in mind originally, they planned it out over the course of years to make it an interesting story, dating all the way back to 2006 when Amadeus Cho was first introduced. Cho has been involved with the Hulk for a long time.
