Wow. What a
ride. Marvel's
Symbiote Spider-Man Alien Reality #1 is filled cover-to-cover with insane surprises that will thrill comic book fans - but what would you expect from an issue that begins Doctor Strange finding the "Word of God"?
The fact that the original creative team from
Symbiote Spider-Man returned to put this together is probably an indicator of why the comic book is so fantastic. It's also likely a reason why the panels are filled with fan-favorite characters - each with a twist.
What begins as a battle with Kraven the Hunter turns into a reality-shifting moment where the jungle-man instead is an ally and partner to the web-head. In an attempt to get away from the crazieness Peter takes the Spider-mobile (also completely out of place) and feels relieved when he sees the Black Cat on a rooftop - finally hoping to get answers to the crazy questions this issue raises.
Unfortunately for the wall-crawler he soon realizes that Black Cat is not Felicia Hardy and instead is Natasha Romanoff - and she knows his secret identity! Why wouldn't she, though? Apparently in this strange reality they are lovers as a full-page is devoted to the two of them locking lips atop a building - an image that pays homage to moments from the web-swingers history.
Going to the only person he can think of for help, Parker soon discovers the root of the issue - the Sorcerer Supreme is not Doctor Stephen Strange, but instead is the villinaous Hobgoblin who taunts our hero and clearly caused everything that happened around him. The Hobgoblin Supreme keeps Peter on the ropes and almost finishes the job until he is saved by the last minute with one more twist - by what seems to be a homeless Doctor Strange.
Marvel's Symbiote Spider-Man Alien Reality #1 is a spectacular way to kick off this new chapter in a fan-favorite series. Peter David brings fans of the wall-crawler a memorable adventure that takes Peter Parker's reality and twists all of the beloved characters to give them fun new offerings in this adventure. From the foreboding opening scenes to the ultimate twist at the end which will leave readers looking for more, this is a perfect entry to hook fans on the symbiotic series. - Five out of five.
