COMICS: Don't Expect To See Wally West In The DCnU Anytime Soon

Many felt it was only a matter of time before the fan favorite Flash turned up in the pages of DC's New 52. Well, if that does happen it seems it will be later rather than sooner..

For a character not to be the first to take up a super hero mantle to be so popular is pretty rare. In fact it's arguable as to which version of The Flash, original Barry Allen or his successor Wally West, is more loved by fans. So when DC's New 52 rolled out it was no surprise that they began with Allen, but a lot of fans felt it was a foregone conclusion that West would also be whizzing into the pages of the DCnU at some point too. Well as much as the team behind the new Flash comic Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato would love to see it, it doesn't look good for the time being.

..In a just-posted interview with Comic Book Resources, the co-writers revealed they’ve submitted a Wally proposal to DC. The problem is, the publisher doesn’t seem to be in a rush to reintroduce the former Kid Flash turned Fastest Man Alive.

“The pitch is on Dan [DiDio's] desk,” a laughing Manapul tells CBR. “Let’s see if he finds it! That’s really all there is to say!”

However, when contacted by CBR, a DC representative said there are no plans for Wally West at this time.

What do you think Flash fans? Are you happy enough with Barry Allen for now or are you disappointed young Wally won't be making an appearance?

They're side-lining him? [frick], that's a shame. As much as I like Barry, Wally was a little bit cooler to me. He was a bit more rock-n-roll as the Flash. I'm going to miss the infinite mass punch and all the other cool shit he did with the manipulation of the speed force.

Then again, this could be an opportunity to bring him in as a new speedster, with a different look and codename. Going in with this new massive mulligan to simplify the DCU it'd make sense to limit the amount of speedsters running around with the Flash name.

Grew up with Wally. Barry is a stranger to me.

Atleast let Barry have a decent amount of issues before you bring in Wally, DC...

I´m also old school, but i already mourned Barry on the Crisis, so his ressurrection was a cheap gimmic to me.

Meh, I have always loved Barry and Wally. Grew up on Barry. Maybe it's DC's way of trying to not bring in so many Flash's.

Not fair! Dick, Jason, and Tim all exist but Wally doesn't? they couldn't give him a heroe's death or something? Sheesh!

The kid flash in Teen titans should be wally!!! Not Bart...how the heck are they going to explain Bart in the new DCNU without having Wally there first...

Bit of a fail here DC!!!
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 10/27/2011, 7:38 AM
Doesn't make any sense. Wally should be about Dick's age and Dick is already Nightwing. If they wanted to make Barry the only Flash they should have come up with an alternate identity for Wally, not just ignore him. This from someone who doesn't even read much DC.

What!!!!? WALLY WEST was the one that actually made the Flash cool, with personality and substance. Barry Allen is just boring as [frick] as the character. Another DC bullshit move. Ugh!

@BIGBMH You're right, it doesn't make any sense. It's a slap in the face to fans. The Flash may be my favorite superhero, but I'm a Wally West fan, first and foremost. They've found a place for Dick, Roy and all the others (just about). It's ridiculous. Give him a new superhero identity, separate him from Barry, whatever, a lot of us don't care about that. It's idiotic to completely ignore a fan base that's been building almost as long as Barry AND that has been in the forefront of the series for the past twenty years.
I'd be different, even, if the higher-ups at DC were at least respectful when addressing him. There have been too many occasions where fans ask about Wally at conventions only to get,"Who?" as an answer.

It may be a good idea for them to leave Wally for a couple of years, instead of rushing to reintroduce him. I mean if they do that, why have Barry there in the first place? Give Barry some decent time in the role before bringing Wally back.
AC1
AC1 - 10/27/2011, 8:23 AM
Unless of course they make Wally a different superhero. Maybe not Kid Flash, but they could always rework the Impulse identity for Wally and make him like the Nightwing to Barry's Batman?

Most today know Wally West as the prominent Flash. This is a disappointment. I can't just forget about JL/JLU or Identity Crisis or Morrison's JLA or even parts of Rebirth. I don't like Dan DiDido. He's a moron. Like DC's own Joe Quesada. One More Day anyone?

I grew up with Barry as the Flash so I'm fine with this. Wally is cool too but I prefer to give Barry some time first to then eventually introduce Wally down the line. I think it's too early for Wally.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! my day just got ruined!!

k I know Bary came first but Wally has been the Flash for just as long, 25 years, and anyone who has picked up any DC comic in the past 25 years knows the Flash as Wally West so what DC is basicaly saying is eff u to all the fans from the past 25 years and all the old people, (that means u gusto ;)) are jumping for joy.

yaaayyyyy "clap" "clap" way to go DC

I have a feeling it's more JOhns than it is DiDio (this time). JOhns wants the DCU as close to the silver age as possible. That means Hal and Barry will be the prominent guys in their respective roles, not Wally and Kyle. A shame as Wally has way more personality than Barry.

When I first started reading DC comics Wally West was the Flash so he will always be the Flash to me.

Wally has the best material. I think Barry should stay solo for a few years. but I'm all for Wally as the new reverse flash. Or Black Flash

How do you have a Bart and a Barry and NOT a Wally? What randomness.

I didn't grow up with Barry, but I wanted to give him a fair shot. I always heard good things and his death in Crisis on Infinite Earths was one of the greatest moments in comic history. That said, I have noticed a disturbing difference between Barry Allen as the Flash (the new stories anyways) and Wally West as the Flash. I was always excited and intrigued by what Wally was doing. I am extremely bored and apathetic to what Barry Allen is doing. He'll, sometimes Barry is flat out depressing.

I have bought some "classic stories" of Barry, so I know it wasn't always this way, but they are not like his new stories. He is perpetually depressed about women, depressed about his mom's death or depressed about some other unfortunate situation he caused. I don't like reading stories where he spends 90% of the time frowning. I don't like how often he is in his lab, and I don't like how he is text messaging someone on every other page. We see him walking or standing as a civilian more than we see him running as the Flash. Take the #1 issue. He stands around in the lab, walks on the street, does some text messaging, gets sad about women, then once we finally see some Flash action, he gets all depressed because a nameless bad guy died!

I have been a Flash fan my entire life, but this new Barry is VERY hard to read. I didn't buy a Barry Allen comic, I bought a Flash comic. Make with the super speed, action, interesting physics elements of his battles/powers and some interesting plot development already. I guess I just miss the upbeat pace of Wally West and can't stand writers making the death of Barry's mother more important in a Flash comic than the death of Bruce Wayne's parents are in a Batman comic.

This news could just be a diversion to maintain a future "plot twist" where Wally shows up as some other character (i.e., Nomis bringing mentioning a new Reverse Flash). Or perhaps, Wally is introduced and something bad happens to him, which changes Barry's outlook on fighting crime.

Do not mind me I am just brain storming here.

Awe that sucks.

DC must've known I'd settle for Captain Marvel instead.

Worst of all, "the Flash" was cool and popular among the muggles because of the JLU cartoon. Kids down my street had big Flash action figures too.

Barry Allen should be the Obi Wan at most, not the Luke.
